Chapter 21
Lua - Tunis, 2022 CE
"Well you look happy. Feeling better?" Nadia asks, with a small hint of sarcasm as she sips a mug of tea at the table.
I stand in the doorway to the dining area, holding Lina's hand. "We're together!" I say with a big grin, waging a finger between Lina and I.
"Yea, I know…" Nadia says, a confused expression spanning her face.
"No, I mean, we're a couple." I smile, looking up at Lina.
Nadia rolls her eyes. "Yea, I know. Look, I'm glad you two seem to have worked out whatever was going on. Does this mean we can be friends now?"
I nod. "Yea, but first I owe you an apology."
Lina releases my hand, and pats my back as I move to sit across from Nadia.
I take a seat in the hard wooden chair, under the extravagant chandelier, and take a deep breath. "I'm really sorry for how I've treated you. You've been really kind to both of us. I wouldn't even be walking if you hadn't jumped to help two strangers on the street in Oran. You deserve a lot better treatment. I realized that I was projecting a lot of my own insecurities onto you, and was feeling jealous and threatened by all the time you spent with Lina while I was unconscious. I think I've dealt with that now. I'm really sorry."
Nadia laughs. "Oh wow, that's funny."
"Sorry? What is?" I ask, confused.
"That you would feel jealous and threatened by me. I'm not even attracted to other people, sexually or romantically." Nadia giggles.
"Oh…" Embarrassment swells in me.
"All of my love is reserved for magic, science, Qasira, my family at the mosque, my friends, which I hope will include you two now, and most importantly, food!" Nadia laughs, patting her belly.
"Oh wow, I really am an idiot." I say, looking down.
Nadia smiles at me. "Thanks for apologizing. I accept your apology!”
She turns to address Lina. "We should extend our stay in Tunis for a night. You two should take some alone time to be together tomorrow, take a day to enjoy yourselves. Maybe go shopping?" Nadia winks, tapping her neck.
Lina sighs, with a warm smile. "That sounds like a great idea. What do you think Lua, want to go get a new dress?"
I beam up at my vampire, enthusiastically nodding rapidly.
Lina chuckles. "Ok, then we're going dress shopping tomorrow!"
"Yay!" I shout, with a little clap of my hands. "What did you buy today though?" I nod at Lina's shopping bags still sitting on the table.
"Spices of course! We gotta keep your collection fully stocked!"
"Oh wow!" I exclaim as I peek into a bag filled with bright and colorful herbs and spices. "I'll cook soup tonight! Do you want to try some of my soup Nadia?"
Nadia perks up. "Of course! Lina wouldn't shut up about it while you were knocked out."

"Aww." I tilt my head at my vampire.
"Do you want to borrow my hair products, and curling iron tonight in exchange?" Nadia asks me.
"Ooh, you would let me?" I ask excitedly.
"Sure, you gotta look cute for your date tomorrow!" Nadia grins.
I smile happily. Lina is not amused for some reason. I look at her confused as I sense her frustration.
"Nadia." She says sternly, looking past me to beam a very intimidating look at the small air channeller. "You've gotta stop doing that."
"What are you talking about?" Nadia laughs nervously.
Lina takes a seat beside me, glaring across the table at Nadia. "You were eavesdropping on our conversation in the bedroom, weren't you? Don't lie to me." Lina raises a finger at the nervous woman.
Nadia shifts in her seat, wiggling uncomfortably. "I have an inquisitive mind! I can't just not make observations about my subjects."
Lina sighs. "Nadia, we are people, not research subjects. If you want to travel with us, you need to respect our privacy. That was a very private and intimate conversation that you had no right to hear."
Nadia looks at her twiddling thumbs. "I know…I'm sorry. I was just hoping to hear something about where we are going, or learn more about dark magic."
"I accept your apology." I speak up. "You've had a lot of good reasons to be suspicious of us, especially with how I treated you. I'm willing to start with a clean slate if you are."
"Deal." Nadia smiles, offering her hand for me to shake.
"Lina?" I ask, looking at my vampire with Nadia's hand in mine, stretching across the table.
"I'll start with a clean slate, so long as you agree not to listen to our private conversations from now on." Lina says, crossing her arms.
Nadia frowns. "Look, maybe if you just tell me what we're going to Libya for, I could be satisfied."
"No."
Nadia recoils in shock. "But you promised last night! You said you'd tell me!"
"I lied." Lina shrugs. "Call us even now for all your spying, and for inserting yourself into our travels."
"That's not fair! I never pegged you for a liar Lina! All those thousands of years of life, and you never learned a shred of honor or integrity?" Nadia wags a small fist at the giant woman next to me. Even I'm surprised by Lina's callousness.
"I've learned that honorable people die young, and I've lived for a long time." Lina stares blankly at Nadia across the table.
Nadia's mouth hangs open. "Fine then, I won't agree to stop spying until you tell me what I want to know." Lina crosses her own arms.
"Fine." Lina huffs.
Nadia's face suddenly breaks into a smile. She jumps up and grabs my hand, pulling me away from the table towards her room. "You however can have a clean slate! C'mon friend, let's go do your hair!"
I scowl at Lina over my shoulder, hoping she feels how disappointed I am with her.
