Jannet slowly opened her eyes. A white tent roof greeted her; no birds chirped, and loud noises came from outside. It took her some time to realize where she was. Memories washed over her like dreams. She straightened up. The first thing Jannet saw was a note on the door.

When she got up, she noticed pain spreading through her body again. Her body groaned with every step. She staggered to the faucet, where a small mug stood ready. Luckily, Luna left the medicine here. She always found Luna remarkably prescient, except for the swamp situation. She didn't like the time when she had to hike through it.

Jannet mixed the powder with the water and drank it. She could only choke down the liquid. The bitter taste almost killed her, and she sat down due to the pain. It took a while for the pain to fade.

She still couldn't believe a portable tent had a water tap. But in the world she was in, nothing made sense right now. Perhaps she'd already gone insane, and Luna's strangeness rubbed off on her. That was what Jannet always tried to tell herself, at least.

After washing and dental hygiene, she put on the clothes already laid out for her. She wore a lovely, warm dress with roses and a thick coat to keep her warm. It hadn't snowed yet, but the cold air was still making itself felt. Her hair was combed, and she tied it with a black ribbon.

This was the most enjoyable day she had ever had in the New World. She was freshly washed and had clean clothes on. She never thought she could walk around like that again. But she also knew that she wouldn't always have such a luxury.

Finally, she went to the piece of paper Luna had plugged into the wall with one of her knives.

'Dear Jannet, I'm already investigating the area with Kanah, but I should be back around noon. You can always go to the table and get something to eat. If you're looking for me, go to the wall; I should be there around noon.

Kind regards, Luna.'

As she read the message, her stomach began to grumble. "I think I'll get something to eat first." Jannet left the tent and started looking for the place she could get a meal.

The sun was already high in the sky, meaning noontime had already dawned. She had eaten a nice meal and was now on her way to the wall. The knights she met all greeted her with a show of hands without saying a single word. Jannet wondered about that; had Luna informed people of her situation?

Finally, she reached the wall. Just yesterday, she stood on the stone wall with no way down. The knights had prepared for that, and a couple of simple staircases went up the wall. Jannet made a face as she walked into a wall of horrible smells. 'That disgusting smell again; where is it coming from?' she wondered. Was the infection so far advanced that only the wall kept them safe?

A scream snapped her out of her thoughts. "Hey, Jannet, over here!"

She looked around and saw Luna and Kanah on the wall. They both looked your way. A staircase of the earth led up the wall directly where they stood. The stench got worse the higher she climbed the wall. What were those two doing up there?

The cold but damp wind tossed the grass, but the thick clothing kept her warm. From the position of the sun, Jannet concluded that they were looking in a southerly direction. When she reached the top, she looked straight ahead at the forest. It looked mostly desolate. Many trees were on the ground. Gray, as if the life energy had been drained from them. Only a few parts were still undamaged. Dead monsters pierced by spears and arrows decorated the floor. Some body parts had been completely pulverized. It seems like a fight has taken place.

"Did the monsters attack during the night?" Jannet asked the group.

"What did she say?" Kanah replied. It seems that Kanah had trouble understanding Jannet.

"That was the language problem I told you about. Do you have any idea why you can't understand her?"

"How am I supposed to understand her if her voice lacks the hint of mana?"

"Mana, how didn't I think of that?" Luna said, covering her face with her hands. Both parties were deep in discussion and didn't even notice how Jannet crossed her arms over her chest and angrily looked in their direction.

"How come she doesn't amplify her voice with mana?" Kanah asked curiously.

"I have no idea; I found her unconscious in the woods. Her memories are all gone." Luna replied.

"But you use mana in your voice; why didn't you notice that?"

"Honestly, I  have no idea. Both sound practically the same to me." Jannet cleared her throat once and tried to draw attention to herself. Luna and Kanah both turned to her at the same time.

"Could you at least interpret what is being said for me?" Janne asked, annoyed. She didn't like it when people spoke in a different language in front of her and cut her out of the conversation, even if it was unintentional here.

"Understanding will probably take a while," Luna said, frowning. "But you could try channeling mana into your vocal cords; then you should be able to join the conversation at least, even if you don't understand what we say." Luna scratched the back of her head, determined because the situation was awkward.

Jannet began directing her mana toward the vocal cords. More accumulated in her larynx. She looked ahead and saw Kanah had an expectant look on her face.

"Can you understand me now?" asked Jannet.

She only saw Kanah and Luna flinch. Luna lost her balance. Jannet squeaked when she saw that Luna would have almost fallen off the wall if Kanah hadn't reacted immediately and caught her.

"Wow, you knocked her out completely," she said while holding Luna's unconscious body in her arms. Jannet immediately noticed something was wrong with Luna. All her muscles were limp like she was asleep. She waved her hand in front of Luna's head, but nothing happened.

"Oh yeah, you can't understand me properly yet," Kanah sighed. Jannet watched as she carefully placed Luna on the wall.

'Did I knock her out with my voice?' she wondered. Her stomach was immediately cramped. She didn't want to hurt Luna. Jannet tilted her head as Kanah gestured to explain something to her. In the end, she didn't understand what Kanah was trying to tell her, and they waited for Luna to regain consciousness.

Groaning loudly, Luna raised into a sitting position. Jannet immediately rushed over to see if everything was all right with her.

"I guess that got you laid, but who would have guessed that she was putting so much mana into the voice?"

"Maybe it was my fault; I almost knocked out all my defenses because I thought I wouldn't understand her otherwise because the effect would be so weak."

"You should have seen her; she became white as a ghost," Kanah said, laughing out loud.

Jannet didn't understand a word again. But just as she was about to draw attention to herself, "Jannet, try putting less mana in your voice. You don't want to kill an elephant, do you?"

She shook her head eagerly and saw a friendly smile on Luna's lips. Warmth spread through her body as she thought about it. Luna tried to cheer her up.

She imagined herself picking up mana with a pipette. Again, mana pooled in their vocal cords. The amount was not comparable to the previous one. "How is it now?" she asked, a bit intimidated. She didn't want to hurt Luna again.

Luna turned to Kanah. "It could be a bit louder, but please don't yell like before."

Jannet only partially understood what Kanah said, and in the end, she had to go back to Luna, who translated the whole thing for her. She tried several more times. Ultimately, she found that the perfect amount was half a shot glass, at least in her imagination. Each speech required a lot of concentration, and she couldn't say more than a few words. She also came up with the idea of channeling mana to her eardrums to hear better hear Kanah’s mana voice the results weren't as successful as she'd hoped.

Her perception increased many times, causing Luna and Kanah's normal voices to become deafening screams. Luna was concerned when Jannet collapsed on the ground and scolded her when she revealed her plan with angry looks. Jannet didn't like it when Luna became angry.

Jannet voluntarily spent the rest of the day next to Luna and Kanah, slowly understanding when the two were talking to each other. She found it difficult to place the different mana waves correctly, but if the two of them spoke slowly, she was able to do it reasonably well.

They had just eaten supper, and the three of them were sitting in the tent. It was already dark outside, and Jannet learned to pick up the mana waves and combine them with the sound waves. She didn't fully understand what mana waves were. It was still hard, but she understood that they are similar to sound waves. Instead of the vibrating molecules that cause sound, they are simply produced by a different energy source and transferred through a different medium. She could understand Kanah mostly by now.

"How about I start teaching Jannet elemental magic tomorrow? Meanwhile, you explore the forest and try to find out what kind of creature the queen is." Jannet's eyes widened. She had half understood what Kanah had suggested. 'Why should Luna go to the forest?' was her only thought. She had experienced firsthand how dangerous this forest could be, and now Luna should go into the most unsafe part.

Jannet was sure Luna didn't owe Kanah anything, so why would she agree to go along with such a self-assassination squad? "I'll go tonight because it suits me better as a vampire," Luna replied.

Jannet didn't understand anything anymore, and she looked puzzled in the direction of the two. Luna had already bought their current stay with valuable information, and yet she decided to go into the cruel forest.

"Jannet, Kanah will start teaching you elemental magic tomorrow; in return, I will investigate the Infected Forest to find out what kind of creature the Queen is and the earliest time an attack can be expected."

"You're doing this for me?" Jannet asked, puzzled. She could still understand that Luna helped her escape from the forest. However, she had always assumed that Luna would abandon her as soon as the situation became too dangerous.

"Please don't do that; I'll learn magic differently; you don't have to take such a risk for me." Jannet tried to stay calm, but desperation still made her voice tremble. She knew that Luna had unrivaled skills. And her body could take a lot, too. She saw how Luna just shrugged off the spikes that pierced her body.

"Oh, I can do it. All you have to do is trust me. Worst case scenario, I'll only lose an arm, but nothing that can be recovered," said Luna and laughed in the process.

Immediately, Jannet went white as a sheet. "It's not something you joke about; how am I supposed to keep calm when you're already starting to joke about injuries?" In both books and movies, the same phenomenon consistently occurs.
The character only succeeds in leaving a message rather than coming back alive.

Small tears flowed down her cheek. Her eyes had already turned slightly red. She didn't want Luna to go away. But she knew Luna would, with or without her attunement. She suddenly felt two arms wrap around her. "You don't have to worry. I'll be back around noon tomorrow."

Jannet started playing with her hair. It wasn't long before she pulled out a gold hairpin. She handed it to a confused-looking Luna. "You bring it back to me, even if you have to crawl halfway through the forest," she said, her voice slightly sobbing.

Luna just smiled. It seems she understood that Janner just wanted to calm himself with this.

"Many Thanks. I should then be on my way. She tousled Jannet's hair one last time. Jannet quickly tried to grab the hand that was on her head, but Luna had already set off.

"We'll see each other again tomorrow!" She called and left the tent faster than the wind could blow.

Her hands were still on her head, processing the situation like a snail. Luna was gone, and she hadn't even wished her luck or said goodbye.

"You should go to bed, Jannet. We have a lot planned for tomorrow." Kana tried to drive the worries out of Jannet's head with a calming voice. She finally left the tent with her head hanging down. Her mind was picturing the worst possible scenarios and playing them out like a horror movie.

She lay in bed for a long time, deep in thought, until sleep finally overtook her.

The next day her training began; it was still early in the morning, but she couldn't sleep a wink. So she got a red dress with gold trimmings. Runes decorated the front and back. Her sleeves were long and swung glamorously through the air with every movement. The fabric that touched her skin was soft as a cloud. Jannet secured her hair with a silver bobby pin with a blue and white flower.

She rotated like a spinning top in front of the mirror and admired how the dress opened like a flower. Her sleeves flapped elegantly through the air. The ice-blue flower in her hair shone like a twinkling star in the night sky.

She still had no idea what the runes on the dress meant, but Luna was often amazed at how many runes were used in this camp. She hadn't seen any on her clothes before, so she assumed she was wearing a more expensive gown. It was still quite chilly outside, but the warmth radiating from the dress protected her like a thin film stretched over her skin.

All her worries vanished when she saw herself spinning in the mirror like a princess for the first time. Concerns returned as Jannet made her way to Kanah's tent. But she had no time for useless emotions. Luna was in the woods, risking her life so Jannet could get a decent basic education. She would only be a disappointment if she didn't take her teaching seriously.

With renewed courage, she reached Kanah's tent and enthusiastically knocked on the door. She looked forward to showing off her progress to Luna once she got back to the camp.

After a long time of knocking, the door finally opened, and a sleepy face peeked out. Circles had formed under the eyes, and the hair was still tousled. It looked like she had just been yanked out of bed.

Jannet's gaze wandered slightly down, where she still saw the sleeping clothes. She didn't have a clock in her tent, but she thought it wasn't that early anymore. The sun had risen a few minutes ago.

Kanah's face didn't show the slightest bit of enthusiasm.

"You're way too early, but while you're here, you might as well start with the basic exercise."

Like an owl, Kanah disappeared behind the door, which was only cracked open. Only rumblings could be heard. Jannet suspected that Kanah had ransacked all the boxes in the tent.

It got quiet, and she reappeared at the door with an object. Jannet could see her holding a piece of white paper. She leaned forward slightly to get a better look.

"Take that and go to the training ground. In contrast to the voice, a spell requires more magical energy and better control. The paper changes color once a minimum value has been reached. As long as the minimum value is not met, you can learn the theory behind the spells, but you will not be able to use it." Kanah explained, to which Jannet just nodded.

She took the paper and was shocked at how much heavier it was. If Jannet had to compare it to something, it would be a thin yet strong sheet of metal.

Kanah yawned. "I'll come to you later; try to change the color in the meantime. The darker and bolder the color, the better."

Without any warning, Kanah slammed the door, and Jannet jumped backward. 'How rude,' she thought while sticking out her tongue.
