Jester’s POV

I crossed the bridge and hid in a bush.

Before going forward it would be wise to check what I have.

‘Kay, 1 rifle, 6 mags and 2 grenades. If I do end up in a firefight then I am as good as dead.

I checked the surroundings but no one came to check the noise. If the enemy is as smart as the captain thinks then they would already have a welcoming party for us. Due to this I need to be as cautious as I can.

Whistle

To hell with this, I just need to find that ‘church’, climb there and look around while Old man brings the tank here. 30 minutes and I can return to my seat.

“Checking comms. Jester, reporting that the river was successfully crossed. No AT guns and no hordes of infantry. Proceeding to the church. Over.” For some time I did not have any answer.

Jester, this is Belov. You are idiot. I repeat: You. Are. Idiot. Confirm receiving. Over.

“Received loud and clear. Have you found a ford?”

Negative, the river appears to be deeper than we anticipated. Will need more time. Over and out.” Crap, if this is true then I will have to bake my a* for longer.

As it is of no use regretting over the Mother Nature’s creation, I headed towards the church.

When I was near the place I saw that it is not a single object but an entire village.

“Commander, there is a village. Should I go and check it?”

G* 1&@*d. S*&#. C&*@ @^% %&$(ching. Do yo* hea% me?” So much static noises I barely heard what she shouted at me.

“The comms glitched for a while.”

I rep%&t, go ahe!%. Che^& the vil^a*e. Conf*rm.” Now it was better but it was still hard to understand.

“Go and check the village. Confirm?”

Go*d! !.” No more transmission so I guess I just have to go.

I switched the rifle to full-auto and approached. When I was near the first building I took cover and glanced behind the corner at the street. The village appears to be empty. Just in case I opened the door of the building and checked insides. It was empty but the things are scattered around as if the people left this place in hurry.

I moved from one house to another but they all were empty and now I was wondering what is going on.

By the time I was done checking half of the village I grew so sick and tired of it.

Help!

Oh s*! I better hurry!

I jumped over a few stick fences before I ended up near a small building at the edge of the village. There I saw a number of people, soldiers, who were kicking a naked woman and her child. Near them I saw a number of killed people.

My hand started shaking. I barely forced myself to aim the rifle and pulled the trigger.

Tra-ta-ta Tra-ta-ta Tra-ta-ta

With short bursts I killed three of the soldiers before they turn at me. Why are they looking at me like that. S*! Why are they shaking?!

S*! S*! S*!

Tra-ta-ta Tra-ta-ta

As the last of them fell I felt my arms going numb and the rifle dropped out of my hands.

I regained my senses when I saw one of the soldiers moving. He is mortally wounded and will soon die.

I almost immediately picked up the rifle and approached.

Bang

At least he was put out of his misery fast. I turned towards the civilians.

The woman was wounded and had many cuts and bruises. I am not a doctor but even I can tell she will not make it. Her child only had minor injuries and his life is not endangered. He was crying over his mother. I pushed the child away and checked the woman. There really was nothing I could do to help her. I used the radio. Maybe that miracle will happen again.

Is there anybody on this frequency? We need evacuation for a dying person. We need it NOW!” My voice was shaking and switched itself between shouting and hysteric.

“Reading you loud and clear. Medevac is en route. Can you keep the wounded alive until the helicopter arrives?” The same voice that always contacts commander.

For now it was not the time to question anything. I was doing my best to bandage the wounds but the woman lost too much blood and was unconscious.

The helicopter arrived in two minutes and then… I don’t remember anything that happened. The period between the heli’s landing and taking off is completely blank. What the f*?!

I ended up alone here, between the pools of dried blood and dead bodies. I am the reason all those people died…

J*@&er, what the f*&^ *& g*(ng on?! W* heard gu*shots!

Just… a… minor… contact… Over…?

Did yo* #e the posi*&^* in &^& church?” I barely understood what she is saying.

“Yakov Nikolai-Elena Zinaida-Anton-Nikolai-Yakov-Leonid. Boris-Greek I-Leonid Vladimir Boris-Olga-Yuriy.” [Ya ne zanyal. Bil v boyu. – I did not take. Was in a fight.]

Unde^& ******** ” From that moment on the connection was lost.
