Four sturdy men approached the gates, and pulled ropes tied to them.
The gates opened with a loud creak, and the tank slowly started driving forward.
As soon as we passed the gatehouse, I glanced back at Valencio and his retinue. After I waved them, I dived inside and closed the hatch.
“From this moment we are no longer safe. Maintain vigilance.”
Jester was trying to stretch in the seat, while I was checking on the surroundings from time to time.
At least in the surroundings of the city there should be no enemy forces but there can be other dangers.
“Please, tell me, how does it feel to be sitting on a powder keg?” (O)
“It feels great. We are completely alone, so I’d rather be sitting on shells, than be shooting peas.”
“Oh, really?! Who has better chances of surviving?!” (O)
“WE ALL WILL SURVIVE, IF YOU SHUT UP AND DRIVE.”
“She’s right, Old man, stop whining. I want to sleep…” (J)
“What the hell were you doing for the past three days…?” I am stuck in the same armored box. With the same two morons.
Within several hours we reached the main road, which leads directly to the capital. We will stick to it until we cross the river. From there on we will have full freedom of operations.
The only issue we have right now is the quality of the road.
“Slow down. There’s another hole.”
‘Bom’
We encountered several more holes on our way. Some of them were covered with stretched cloth and dirt.
“Whoever did this, they might try attacking us. Keep your eyes open.”
This much will make a horse slow down but for us it is only enough to cause a minor inconvenience. We should be safe, unless they have a RPG.
‘Bum’
“Watch out!”
‘BOM’
This hole was larger than the previous ones. We had to stop for a moment.
‘Ping’
‘Ping ping ping’
I looked around and saw that we are shot at with arrows.
“Those guys must have a death wish. Load HE, turn to azimuth 90. Hold fire.”
‘Whuuuu-ch-whuu’
‘Ping ping’
I looked through thermal scope, and saw a group of people hidden in the bushes.
I aimed the Kord near them and fired a warning shot.
Bum
‘Ping ping ping’
“You asked for it… Azimuth 87, range 50.”
“Ready.” (J)
“Fire!”
“Shooting!” (J)

BOOM
The bushes were sent flying around.
After the loud bang of the gun, the surroundings went silent.
‘Whu-pum-whu’
“Continue going. We do not need to waste more time here.”
“Understood.” (O)
By the evening we arrived to the river.
The surroundings were dark, so we agreed on waiting for the morning. Crossing an unknown bridge in the middle of nowhere is a bad idea, no matter how you look at it.
We stopped the tank at the side of the road, and set up the tent.
“Whose turn is it?”
“Yours~. Have fun~.” Jester patted my shoulder and climbed inside the tent.
In my thoughts I remembered as many curses as a ship’s captain would remember during a storm, and put on the night vision googles.
The first few hours everything was going fine. Then my eyes started closing by themselves.
I mumbled some songs to keep myself awake.
I did not even bother expecting it to help. At least the time went faster.
When I checked on my wristwatch, the time was already 3 AM.
I stepped up on the engine cover, and crawled into the tent.
In front of me were two legs. The left one, or the right one…?
I pulled one of them.
‘Mhm…?’
‘Wake up. Congratulations on winning the lottery. Climb out and receive your prize, the unpaid watch session.’
‘I don’t remember participating…?’ Old man mumbled.
‘Do I give a f*, or I don’t?’
‘Tch, wake up Dima. I want to sleep.’ (O)
‘I definitely don’t remember asking for your opinion.’
Old man started groaning, and climbed out of the tent. I immediately dived into his sleeping bag. It is warm, it is warm, and it is warm.
It is the best thing after having myself shiver outside for half the night.
When I woke up I immediately headed to the bridge.
Old man was already there.
“We are having a bit of a problem, don’t we?”
We lack any instruments to examine the bridge. All I can say is that it is wooden, and the river is too wide to cross it unprepared.
I got my notepad, and started drawing the scheme. If even my vague calculation would show that this thing can’t handle the tank, then we will start preparing to ford the river.
Then, I started knocking the wood to check if it is rotten.
After some basic calculations I deduced that it should be capable of enduring our passage.
It ‘should’.
