Chapter 39: V3C7 – Saving Too Late

[Teleportation]

We ventured off to [Orvinus] to prevent the worst from happening with Rinku and Thouria. Upon arrival, a ringing voice echoed throughout.

"You were too late."

"This is...the [Divine Realm]."

From Ryosuke's knowledge, the [Divine Realm] is a different space from the mortal realm of [Orvinus] where the Goddess [Ervia] and the God of Destruction reside. It's purely an empty world with the will of gods floating around. Usually, you'd manifest here as a simple clump of mind and will but it seems that all of our real bodies have transported to the space. Was it somehow intercepted?

Anyways from what I can see, there are no dimensions or colors and the space extends infinitely. There is our foothold though, a floor you could say. Ryosuke received Goddess [Ervia]'s comment and...

"What do you mean we were too late Goddess [Ervia]?"

"Look for yourself."

The empty floor then expanded with color becoming like a huge extending window into the world. As we looked below, we saw hell.

There were no notable structures or fields of nature in sight. The land was burnt, burning, and covered with ugly black masses. Disfigured corpses piled in every corner and neither the skies nor sea were exceptions. The blood was dried, but the [Curses] continued rampaging over the already destroyed world. There were no more humans. No more spirits. No more life at all. The countless [Curses] number way more than millions...I guess Thouria gave outdated info, but to think that the situation would turn to this...

"It happened 4 days ago."

"S-Such a thing..."

Thouria fell to her knees with a pained expression and weariness in her eyes. Rinku and the other heroes similarly had looks of lament and agony. So this is the cause of [Second Contact], the total destruction of [Orvinus] and its connection to Earth. What a tragedy.

The Goddess [Ervia] and God of Destruction manifested before us.

"Heroes, sorry, but there is already nothing left."

"I may be the God of Destruction, but this is not the destruction I wished for."

The room went silent. A broken silence that took an overwhelming role. I don't have any attachment to this world, but seeing such a thing still ravages my insides. After what felt like an eternity,

"If we can't stop the invasion from here, we should go back to Earth and defend our world at least."

Optimistic aren't you.

"True, we need to do what we can to protect what's left...we are heroes after all. Thouria, can you use the last [Teleportation] spell to take us back now?"

But Thouria didn't make a sound.

"Thouria?"

She silently held her staff to her throat.

"Thouria!? What are you doing!?"

Ryosuke grabbed the staff and pulled it towards him only to feel her tight resistance.

"Let go!"

"No, what are you about to do!?"

Her neverending tears streamed down.

"I c-can't..."

"Can't what?"

"The artifact doesn't have enough mana for another trip. I lied. I said it had enough for a round-trip but..."

"Y-You...why...?"

"I had to get the heroes back and save the world no matter the cost. Even if you hated me...I thought...I thought..."

"Wait, doesn't that mean...we're stuck here?"

"So it seems."

The group turned to the gods.

"Can we ask you to send us back home?"

"No."

Immediate denial.

"B-But why?"

"Why would we spend our last precious mana reserves for no benefit? If those beasts can somehow break into the [Divine Realm], we'll be out of luck too."

Are gods realists?

"So, sorry, but we can't help you."

"This can't be true..."

"So we're just stuck here forever? We can't defend [Orvinus] nor Earth, what kind of people are we?"

My own dumb face is expressing my dying insides. We can't get back. We can't save them. I'll never get to live my life again. What did I even come here for? But then, Yoru saved me again.

"There is a way to save [Orvinus] and prevent [Second Contact]."

The entire group's ears shot up upon hearing Yoru who unhid. The gods too were surprised. Yoru began to announce,

"I have contacted the other [Focals] and my superiors of the [Second Contact]'s cause being the fall of [Orvinus] to [Curses]."

I guess [Focals] can contact each other even in different spaces...

"..."

"Therefore, if we could stop [Orvinus] from being destroyed by [Curses], then we can prevent [Second Contact] from happening. From our standpoint, [Second Contact] is an extraordinary break from [Curses] into our universe...kicking off what would be a growing potential of us to being devoured and destroyed so we have a reason."

"But what are you talking about? It's already done and there's nothing we can do."

"With our power, there is always something that can be done."

"Let's lay out some things, shall we? We, [Focals], desire the destruction of the bringers of destruction, [Curses]. They are otherworldly mindless and insatiable monsters, no that isn't entirely true. They do have one mind and will, one that unifies them under the want to kill and demolish. But, when so many are under that one command, they do feel mindless don't they? Anyways, if we want to stop their invasion of our universe, then stopping them here would definitely help with that. Such a stretch wouldn't be enough for us to take the risk. But we will because we have a chance. Yes, with the power of heroes and Aki who can stomach their mana and willpower...we can take down the [Cursed One]."

"[Cursed One]?"

"Yes, they appear when a world is being destroyed by [Curses] as the leader. They are much more powerful and potent than normal [Curses]. Earth didn't have one since they just flowed in arbitrarily not in an organized attack like the numbers in [Orvinus]."

"So what happens by defeating a [Cursed One]?"

"The [Curses] all return to whence they came by the entire's will."

"Why would..."

"It is the idiosyncrasy of the [Curses], we were informed of this."

"What exactly are you [Focals]?"

"...anyways, we also don't want to see [Orvinus] destroyed for our own reasons. It has such usefulness in the field of magic formations so our research would surely be accelerated greatly by seeing them all."

 "Well, this talking is pointless knowing how we can't do anything anymore."

"Then how's this. We have a unique power achieved through utilizing our universe's rules, spacetime manipulation."

"T-That means you can manipulate time?"

"Indeed, we can turn back time to before it all happened...and save them all. I've already gotten permission, the reasons are sufficient. This power would normally not be used but we have an opportunity. So, we will trust in the warriors of Earth."

Everyone's eyes returned to full color. The first to reply was Rino with a quivering voice,

"T-Then is it possible to save my sister!?"

"Yes."

Rino covered her face with her hands but the tears slipped through. I thought,

"We can save them all, prevent [Second Contact] and save [Orvinus]."

The screams will be no more.

"Your other associates are being informed of this on Earth by us as speak, the ones named Yui, Ayame, and Ai. Just saying, but you have no choice in this. Having more people increases the chances too."

"I see, well it's not like we could turn down the chance to fix it all."

"Then--"

"What nonsense are you spouting?"

Goddess [Ervia].

"Turning back time is an impossible feat with your current mana..."

"This is a different power than what you know Goddess [Ervia]."

The God of Destruction, his manifested form being a broad man with presence said,

"If such a thing is possible, please prevent these [Curses]."

He bowed to us. We looked back at the gods with resolved looks. 

"So Yoru, if we go back in time..."

"It'll be 9 days ago when Thouria and Rinku entered our world. Your bodies will regress to what they were at the time, but your minds will not, you do need the knowledge for carrying out this initiative after all. Your bodies were all on Earth so escaping this space is possible."

"[Second Contact] happened 4 days ago, meaning we would have 5 days to defeat the [Cursed One] in [Orvinus]. How long would it take for Thouria and Rinku to rendezvous with us?"

"We can have them instantly teleported to your location, we're already bending the rules so a little more won't hurt."

"Then, how will we get back? The artifact only has enough mana for one [Teleportation]."

"By my calculations, if you are able to defeat the [Cursed One] and drive back the force of [Curses] from [Orvinus], Aki's mana reserves through her ability would hold enough for another trip barely."

"Really?"

"Yes. Really."

The group's atmosphere lit up and their expressions loosened. The gods interjected,

"The me 9 days ago, would likely not be able to bless you in any way. Your mana completely rejects the type of formations I bestow, the God of Destruction would be better for such a task."

"That is true, but the me 9 days ago would only grant you [Language Comprehension], but nothing else. The reason is...you stole my blessing. You can think of that what you will but I doubt that I would give any other useful formations. If I did now, they would be reverted if what that being there says is true."

"I see, well understanding the language is crucial so I'll thank that of you in advance, not that you'll remember it."

"So it's just you guys being sent to the past, we rest the future on you young ones."

"We will definitely..."

Surely, without a doubt...

"Save both worlds!"

All 9 of us, even if we didn't want to. We put our hands together and Yoru placed its small one on top. Time travel huh...

We have 5 days in [Orvinus] to fend off the [Curses] and prevent [Second Contact]. With our resolves firm, in a flash of light, we were all sent to the past. I will prevent the bloodshed I've seen, this I promise.

(Note: When [Orvinus] was destroyed, the gods couldn't give new blessings during the attack since they gave ones recently and they couldn't give direct aid because gods can't easily manifest in the mortal realm)
