Fufi said "Welcome home Merumeru"

"Meeru meeru meru merumeeru," Merumeru said with a smile as she hugged Fufi who hugged her back with her wings.

Fufi inspected Merumeru's new outfit. The whole getup seemed like a costume.  The red hat, overalls, and fake mustache made her look a little silly.  "My what strange clothes you got from that dungeon." Fufi said.

"Meeru, meeeru, meru merumeeru." Merumeru smiled brightly as she touched the brim of the cap.

Fufi touched the cap on the girl's head with her beak. "Oh! It makes you look really grown up."

Merumeru wobbled slightly on the spot but maintained the act of being bigger than her age.

Fufi had to hide a giggle at the sight of Merumeru playing dress up with the stupid hat.

Merumeru giggled at the idea of looking big for Fufi and then ran off to play around in the basement. Fufi went after her and found her trying out all sorts of different things in the room. Merumeru kept trying to talk to Fufi.  She had gotten the [plumber] class as her reward for completing the dungeon successfully. Fufi just laughed playfully and acted like they were playing a game.  To an extent they were playing a game.  It was the game of guessing what Merumeru was trying to communicate.  After grabbing some of the plushies and using them as props the slime girl decided that she needed a more direct route.  So she melted a hole in the basement with her slime powers.  Next, she formed the dissolved stone and earth into a large pipe shaped like the green ones in the dungeon.  Merumeru pointed to the stone and clay pipe and said, "Merumeru."  She wasn't sure how to spell it out more clearly than that.

Fufi clapped her wings together and said, "That's nice Merumeru, good job."  Merumeru nodded in satisfaction.  It took some effort but it looked like she made herself clear to Fufi. Then Merumeru turned her attention back to playing around with Fufi. The two of them played games with Fufi pretending to understand everything that Merumeru was saying. They had a grand old time running around the floor making up their own rules as they went along. When the girls tired themselves out they climbed up on the bed and cuddled close to one another. Neither girl felt sleepy yet so they just talked about various things for a while before drifting off to take a nap.

A few hours later a clunking noise woke the pair.  Alex returned.  He had a book in one hand and a bundle of iron pipes tied together with a bit of rope that he was dragging along behind. "I need a break.  That dungeon is really tough." He complained.

"Is it really? I'm glad you're alright," Fufi responded. She got up from her bed and put her head under his arm. Alex hugged Fufi tightly as they walked towards the stairs and up out of the trap door. Fufi gave him some encouragement and patted the side of his face as they walked away. "Yeah, that dungeon is going to take me forever to do.  Someone would need a four year university degree in clockwork mechanics to even get started," Alex forlornly whines.

"I didn't have to summon you back like the last dungeon so while it may not have gone as smoothly as you'd like you did better than last time.  Try not to get overwhelmed and take things one step at a time." Fufi attempted to cheer Alex up a bit.

Alex took a deep breath and said, "You are right, everyone is safe I should be greatful for that.  I guess I'm just a bit grumpy from running around trying to find a missing girl who wasn't in the place I was looking then attempting to read textbooks and fumble with the workstations to make clockwork dolls in there." He pointed to the still open rift gate.

Fufi takes a deep breath and says,"remember your class is not [hero] so you don't have to act like one.  Those kinds of people run straight into danger expecting to succeed while throwing caution to the wind.  There have been a few of them that the kingdoms summoned over the years here.  However, hot blooded teenage boys are not a great match up for the demon queen's generals.  The last hero had one of the demon queen's minions in his party the whole time.  She was the meek obedient healer.  When the time for the final battle came she put on an act saying she was too scared and that he also had done enough for this world.  The two of them lived the rest of their lives together in a sleepy island village.  It was a place that was suspiciously spared when the demon queen's armies ravaged the rest of the kingdom it was a part of leaving them isolated from the rest of the world."

Alex blinks in disbelief and says,"That's what happened to the hero?  You'd think he'd be immune to charm at least."

Fufu nods and explains,"He was immune to charm.  He had a skill called [mental attack immunity] and could not be charmed, feared, or stunned.  I suspect the reason the dungeons you get are so out of the ordinary is because that is what you need.  Even the strongest hero in the world can be swayed by a sneaky plot.  Women don't fight fair." Fufi wiggled her wing feathers as she made quote marks in the air.

"What happened after that?  I'm surprised no one figured out she was a succubus." Alex asked.

Fufu replied, "That's the thing.  She was a normal human girl.  They didn't even put a geas on her because that could be detected.  The demon queen's army does sneaky stuff like that.  She was groomed for the roll.  Her and the hero lived on that island village the rest of their days in seclusion.  Some of my sisters tried to form contracts with the hero's descendants but that place is closely watched from the shadows.  It is a pity, some of his children could have made great magical girls."

Alex looks at Fufi with an amused smile, "Well I guess I should keep that in mind for future endeavors then?" Alex looked around for any signs of Merumeru. "Want to get something to eat?  It has been a long day and the sun is going down.  Likely the only option is leftovers." Alex sighed.

"That would be good," Fufi said as they headed towards the stone table that had a small store of fruits and berries.  The three of them climbed up to the ruined second floor of the adventurer's guild and watched the sunset as they ate with legs dangling over the side of the stone wall. After finishing their meal Alex said, "This building is made with such thick stone blocks.  It reminds me a bit of the Alamo. I guess maybe if the Alamo had lost the roof and a good chunk of the walls." He tried to sound cheery but it just didn't work well with his gloomy tone.

Fufi nodded and replied, "It does look like it survived a battle.  What is the Alamo?"

"It's a battle from our history," Alex explained. "We have plenty of battles where people died bravely defending a cause or country but we also used to go into battle against other countries back when we were more active in warring with each other. A very famous one was at the Alamo in Texas."

"So what happened at this Alamo? And how did they lose? Did they win?" Fufi asks. She felt she was missing out on some key information.

Alex thought for a minute, trying to recall details he read about before he answered, "The Alamo out for a while then fell to a bigger force and all of the defenders there died fighting until the end. Maybe a few women and children survived but I don't remember. They were holding off the Mexican army, some guy named Santa Ana if I recall correctly." He paused and tried to jog his memory. It wasn't coming easy to him so he gave up. Then after thinking about it Alex remembered why he hadn't liked reading about that part of American history in school.

"That's awful," Fufu says quietly as Alex looks down at her.

"The only reason I recall that is because remember the Alamo is a popular saying," Alex sighs. "It's not a big deal now though. No need to be upset, it happened a long time ago." He pats her head gently. "Let's get inside and get ready for bed. I need to do some more reading tomorrow.  Perhaps we can take Merumeru to the dam to play.  She loves pipes, so I thought I might show her how they can be used in the dam.  If we can repair it then it could be used to take a cart across the river."

"I would love to see that," Fufi said while looking wistfully towards the sky.

The three of them got into the basement and headed to bed after locking up. The next day dawned clear with just enough cloud cover for sun protection. The girls had been enjoying their restful night of sleep. So much so that they woke late in the morning. Alex grabbed his book and the pipes before heading out to the dam. They took Merumeru along for company but found no trace of any demons around or at least nothing hostile.  Alex held Merumeru's hand and took her to the ruined dam.  He let her go and pulled out a piece of charcoal to draw with.  While drawing he explained, "Merumeru, this is what the dam should look like.  Flat across the top and wide enough for a cart to get over it." He drew a straight line to show and under it some circles. He continued, "The pipes could go near the top so that the water goes through them instead of over the top of the dam."  He drew some lines that hopefully looked like water coming out of a pipe.  He looked at the slime girl who had a serious look on her face, "Do you understand?  Want to use your special powers to repair the dam?"

"Meru," she nodded vigorously as if making up her mind about something very important. She walked away from Alex as if getting ready for work. She picked up one end of one of the pipes then walked back over to Alex holding it with her arms wrapped around it as though she was giving it a hug. Then she ran and placed the pipe end against the side of the dam wall and stood there staring at it while tapping on it with both hands. After a few minutes she turned and went back and forth several times before moving off in an almost random pattern again. She walked away from it and looked at it with a critical eye from afar.  Alex grabbed some large rocks from beside the shore and set them on the pipe to hold it in place when Merumeru was satisfied with the placement. He stepped back and watched her intently. Merumeru went down into the water and dissolved some sand and clay into her body.  She took off her gloves and placed them around the pipe as they changed shape to wrap around the pipe.  After a few minutes she was able to use her slime powers to effectively cement the pipe into place by sticking the mixture around the pipe. . Then after a short pause she removed her hat and laid it aside before going under the surface once again to collect more earthen material.

"Good job!" Alex said as he saw her return from underwater with another load of sand and clay. "We should take a break and get breakfast though.  Fufi looks to have gathered some fish and berries."

They ate together as the sun continued to rise.  Alex helped bring some rocks but got tired after a while.  He sat on a log and studied clockwork mechanics.  Merumeru was a ball of energy the whole day though.  Her ability to mold the earth put any contributions Alex could make to shame. They finished up around dusk.  About a quarter of the dam was restored.  After they ate dinner, Merumeru stripped down and handed her clothes to Alex.  "Huh? What are you doing Merumeru?" he asked.

Merumeru just jumped into the water and swam into the inlet of the pipe that led back to town.  "I should have guessed," Alex rolled his eyes. They met back up at the fountain that had a slime girl splashing and playing around it.  The next three days went by in a similar fashion.  Merumeru built, Alex studied, and Fufi gathered food. When it was time for sleep they slept in the basement as always. On the third night Merumeru was exhausted from working so hard all day long. She curled up with them and fell asleep instantly. After watching her breathing gently as she rested on them Alex pulled out his book once more. He thought about how this life was harsh but rewarding in its own way.  The slime girl slowly shifted and squished against him while he read under the light of his cell phone.

When morning came Alex awoke to find that he didn't remember going to bed. It seemed like he must have been dozing while reading until the first rays of sunlight found their way into the basement.  With another day's work the dam should be finished.  Alex guessed that the first thing Merumeru would want to do when the water level rose up to the pipes was to ride through them all like a waterslide.  However the slime girl showed no signs of waking.  She was able to run circles around Alex, much more in his diminished form.  However, even this little ball of energy could get tired as well.

Fufi helped Alex clean up the fish they had caught, then they started preparing meals. Once they were ready Alex noticed Merumeru was still sleeping.  "It looks like our little girl needs a break.  I think I'll head back into the dungeon and see if I can build a clockwork doll for that trial." he said. " Would you mind keeping an eye on her?"

"Of course," Fufu replied and hugged Alex before letting him walk towards the rift. She looked over at Merumeru who was sprawled out on the stone bed and tried to make sure she was comfortable.
