Round one of the tournament as the sect master announced had finished. Thirty seven contestants were reduced to sixteen. Round two will happen on day three.

I spent the rest of the first day recovering. The wounds I sustained weren’t serious, but the ones Yin Yu gave me would lower my performance by a good note.

Today is the second day, and the master has some guidance he wants to impart onto me. I knock on the door.

“Master. Yun An has arrived.”

“Come in.”

This empty room is one of the many meditation rooms, places that are completely cut off from the outside world. Due to how abstract qi is, these concentration boosting facilities are necessary.

I enter and close the door behind, cared to not cause too much noise.

“Have a seat.”

I settle down, face to face with him. Only then that he opens his eyes.

“How are your wounds?”

“This disciple is grateful for your care. Thanks to senior Tian Zhong and senior Hua Cheng, they have gotten better.”

“They have taken good care of you.”

“It is so, master.”

“Yun An. Can you tell your master what happened to you during your fight with Yin Yu?”

I stayed truthful and recalled the event. After elaborating on certain details answering his inquiry, the master speaks up.

“What I call you here for today is related to what happened yesterday.”

“This disciple is attentive.”

“But first, I want to apologise to you.”

“Master, please raise up.” I fluttered. “Master.”

“I knew you were having difficulties with cultivating, so I decided to return to my sect, the sect that I had abandoned for more than a decade. I know that barely anyone here is my allies, and they shifted their grudge onto you and Tian Zhong. Lil Zhong is young but bright, and he has talents to handle his end. You on the other hand had to endure the insults.

I couldn’t stop the gossip of lower levels. Imposing too much would have brought me into more conflicts with my juniors. I reasoned for my lack of action that the sect’s resources are necessary for your cultivation. Furthermore, there are many disciples. They may offer you better advice on the first few steps than someone who didn’t have to struggle like me.

In the end, you had to resolve to such dangerous tactic. I, Huai Jia, am truly a failure as a teacher.”

“Master… I know what I am feeling and what I am thinking are transparent to you.” His wise old eyes confirm it. “The only thing I can say to you will be. Thank you, master.”

Just as he has seen through me, I too was allowed to see through him. With our perceptiveness, few words are needed to communicate. My “Thank you” is enough to convey everything for the both of us.

“Then I won’t say anymore. The words I have to conclude this would also be. Thank you.”

We lower our head by thirty degrees and stay for a while. With courtesy being given as due to our mutual understanding, we set aside the past.

“Yun An. I know what I can help you now. Please, turn around.”

I show my back to him. Gently, he pulls my sit pad and me on top of it closer.

“Give me your hands.”

I do as told, and he grabs my wrist with his respective hand.

“Yun An. Pay attention to the flow of qi.”

I feel it. A current forces its way into my hands. It goes through my vessels, reaching every corner of my body, from my toes to the last strand of hair. I breathe the qi in and out of my lungs. The invisible qi escapes through my eyes and ears, taking heat with them.

“From nothing there was something, this something is qi.”

Something hot is transmitted through my right wrist, and the right hand starts to vibrate.

“When it is in motion, it is yang, it is heat, it is light.”

Meanwhile, my left hand feels cold to the point I can’t feel it at all.

“When it is immobilised, it is yin, it is cold, it is darkness.”

My hands then alternate between the two opposite modes.

“Yin turns into Yang, Yang turns into Yin, then Yin turns into Yang. The cycle goes on and the two extremes blend into each other, never to be separated. Such is the nature of creation. Everything within the cosmos has with it Yin And Yang.”

I clench my fingers. My strength contains the vibration, and the beating of every constituent within myself breaks the stillness.

“Yun An?”

Trapping the ample of qi within me, my being presses them together. Viscous pearls turn into strings. Strings are woven into sheets. Sheets are folded into clumps. I then crush and pull those clumps apart, and begin a new cycle. The qi that was intangible is palpable as clay.

I will them, the inanimate invisible force, to strengthen my grip. These strange particles of power rush through my vessels to their destination. My hand begins to tremble with power. It becomes a bit difficult to keep still, and I take time to refine my control.

“Qi suppression. Wrestling fate with your own hands, that’s very like you.”

That part I was taught. Qi manipulation can be considered to be a combination of qi suppression and qi mediation. Everyone has a different ratio of suppression-mediation in their qi manipulation. It’s just the style of each person.

“I have seen many but this is the first time I saw anyone with a complete qi suppression. You do not compromise with qi.

While it isn’t a big issue at the moment, it can be a hindrance in the long run. People with a lopsided suppression-mediation tend to face difficulties in later stages. Just as Yin and Yang should be balanced, you can’t just have only one thing. Be sure to overcome this shortcoming.”

“Yes, master.”

My master silently takes his leave.

“Thank you for your teaching, master
