I raise my hands to face level. Each eye sees only the respective palm. At first, the background view turns blurry. Then, the sense of self is gone too. My perception registers only these two hands as I go into a trance. Qi, ever so subtle, gradually gathers in these limbs. Another command makes them fuse with my body. As more qi is condensed, my body starts trembling. One moment is all it takes to disrupt the entire process. The qi on my right hand fizzle out, only the one in the left hand which I focused the most is unaffected. Concentrating on two different things for a prolonged period or assigning them with complicated tasks are really difficult.
It is clear for me how other people can do it while I am facing hurdle after hurdle. If talking is the ability innate to every person of this world. Then a foreign entity like me, although can use it with practice, feels it as unnatural and nonsensical. The intricacy of qi is beyond my grasp, at least for a while more. The people of this world spend ages to awaken their qi manipulation. There are those who couldn’t do it at all. I, who have just begun my journey for some months, can’t hope to understand it.
Mid qi manipulation means I can choose more than one part of my body to concentrate my qi into. I described it as writing two different letters with my two hands. At closer look, it’s more annoying than that. Qi itself is abstract enough that it took me a great deal of pain just to use it. If I couldn’t do it with my hands, it would be impossible for my two feet.
“Yun An.”
“Senior Tian Zhong.”
“How are your injuries?”
“Thank you, senior. It has been better.”
“I am glad it is. Then shall we go?”
“Yes, senior.”
Two days have passed since I fought Li Cao. Originally, round 3 would start today if not for the sect master.
“Seeing you all in high morale moves me. While it is necessary to strike while the iron is hot, a period of recovery is as important. Use this week to reflect on what you have unveiled and improve. Moreover, there should be no reason for us to rush, aren’t we?” He laughed. “The tournament of Gudu is more than two months away. Those who represent us should be the brightest, so let us be thorough…”
His words are intriguing. I had thought he arranged those 3 fights the first day for a petty reason. Perhaps it’s still true, but then he realised my worth and decided to bend the rule for my benefit instead. After all, I am the only one among the eight winners of the second round to suffer substantial damage. It’s clear that I would benefit the most from this one-week break. Although my health wouldn’t be completely restored, the large cut Li Cao gave me as well as the feedback from overextending myself with that last strike will be a non-complication.

Then a thought tickles my inside. The wounds Li Cao gave me were actually not severe. However, I overdid a bit in the last gamble. That big move ripped my wounds wider than they were. I mean even my bones rattled from the burden of that overexertion. Anyway, I have to apologise to Yun An if she is still present somewhere. I used your body like a rag. These will leave scars. It needs to be said. Wouldn’t this be a good excuse to annul the engagement with that young master in Yuecheng (I refer to this city as moon city in chap 2)?
I have to deal with the engagement in the next 5 years. Early engagement occurs because the parents want their children to have a stable family. The sooner they have a family, the faster they can concentrate on their livelihood. I don’t know what kind of family Dong Yun An’s parents have arranged for her. I don’t even know the age of the fiance. However, a young noble boy has to answer for a lot of expectations. The time the family waits for a marriage that wouldn’t happen would be better used to search for a new partner and get acquainted with them and their family.
I have already imagined the kind of reason the other family would use to reject my annulment.
“How could we let you stay alone by yourself? Since we have already had an engagement, let just proceed with it. We want to give you a happy family.”
Or.
“We can’t accept the annulment. You don’t have a parent anymore and you are only (some random number) years old. Who would feed you? Who would care for you when you are sick? If people know we chased out the fiancee of my son, we won’t be able to show our face outside anymore.”
Either they are sincere or have ulterior motives, those would likely be their answer. In the next 5 years, I have to become self-sufficient. That way they wouldn’t be able to use at least one of the excuses.
“Look, Yun An. That’s Xiaocun (literally means “small village”).”
Despite the name which is likely from when the town was still a tiny village, the town is almost as nice as Xincheng (the city she sold firewoods in chap 2, Xincheng is New City) though not nearly as large.
My reason for coming here is simple. I broke the last sword when fighting Li Cao. It’s a sword given to every disciple. I can easily ask for a replacement but I will just break the new one if I can’t protect it with my qi. If so, instead of being useful to me it would be my constraint. I need a more reliable weapon
