"How long ago did this happen?" - I asked as I pulled on my pants and shirt in a hurry.

"A few minutes ago, a lumberjack came running out of the woods, screaming that he'd seen a monster." - My mother answered, handing me my father's sword on a sling and helping me secure it. I nod thankfully and run to the door, where the shoes are.

It took me a few seconds to pull on my boots, and now I was ready to go.

"Luca." - Lucifina's soft voice made me turn around. - "Be careful."

"Of course, Mom." - A slight smile spread across my lips before I slid out the door. Mom's concern warms my heart, though I don't understand her excitement, since she's already seen some of my techniques and knows I'm pretty strong. Well, I can't condemn her, a parent's heart can't command, and the worry about the fate of their child can't be weeded out of it, no matter what...

The street greeted me with the screams and panic of people fleeing en masse toward the Temple of Ilias from all over the village, as well as from outside the village. To avoid pushing in the streets, I jumped onto the roof of our house and made my way toward the forest on top of it. My mother said that the monster was seen there, which means we need to hurry before the mamono gets to the borders of the settlement.

Honestly, I'm a little worried. Even though I've been training like the damnedest, and I'm now at the strength of a chunin, or even a tokubetsu-jonin in some disciplines, this will be my first encounter with a real monster. My mother had put the idea into my head that even the weakest of them must be handled with care, and as the wife of a professional hero, I had no reason not to believe her.

After climbing the rooftops to the edge of the village, I made my way to the country road that led to the edge of the forest. It was the way I walked every day to practice, so I knew the terrain ahead of me well. I wish I had a sensor and could sense the monster from a great distance, but it shouldn't be too far away, since the woodcutter managed to make it without being caught.

I wonder where this mamono came from, in the middle of human land. Is this some kind of test from Elias just for me? Some kind of test of a young hero's determination and skills? It could be. After watching Kakashi's life, my reverence for the gods was somewhat diminished, as there were several individuals in the elemental world who called themselves gods: Madara, Pein, Kaguya, finally... And all of them were, to put it mildly, not very bright, and also cruel and cynical. Why wouldn't Elias be the same?

I would assume so until I knew otherwise, and so I would be as cautious as possible in my dealings with the goddess. For some reason I had no doubt that she would visit me again, and more than once.

I put the seals in the shade of the trees at the edge of the forest and summon the two clones. Nodding silently to me, they disperse in different directions and hop into the trees to scour the area. I follow their example and climb the nearest thick branch and silently glide forward through the foliage, straining my senses to the maximum.

Soon, the search was successful, one of the spears fluttered away, and her memories came to me, where a mamono was moving languidly through the forest. It was slime, literally. A blob of jelly with the outlines of a woman's body was moving slowly toward the village, gurgling merrily something with the pretence of melody, and the sound was coming from where a human girl's mouth should be.

What did my mother tell me about slimes? Weak vulnerability to physical attacks, not the highest intelligence, and tactics mostly boiled down to just jumping on the victim, enveloping her with her body, and doing stuff. The weaknesses are fire, electricity, and water if there's a lot of it.

I'm not sure how much of it I can do, but I'm sure I can't do anything with it. I decide not to show my face right away, but to observe a lot first. The girl, despite her nature, looked kind of cute, and to be honest, not dangerous at all. She was hardly aware of my presence either, which, again, does not speak in favor of her strength. My sense of danger was silent, too. If this was really a test from Elias, she'd given me a weak adversary, as a newcomer should.

I watched Mammono for a moment longer, moving in parallel with her through the trees, and realized that she really wasn't much of a fighter. That was both good and disappointing, because there was no way to test myself in combat with her. On the other hand, she would be enough for most people to never go home again, and I was sure to meet someone strong on my journey, so it would be foolish to get upset.

After studying my opponent, I decide it's time to get acquainted.

"Ow!" - squeaked Mammono, hearing the sound of my landing behind her. and turned around. And she didn't do it by turning her body, but by changing her body shape, so that the "front" was definitely in front of me. - "Boy?"

"Yo!" - I said hello with a wave of my hand, and stared sternly at the slime, folding my arms under my chest. - "Are you the reason for the commotion?"

"I'm hungry!" - The girl's body naturally went in waves of indignation. - "But everyone run away!" - But then her eyes thoughtfully swept over my figure, and satisfied with his thoughts girl said. - "Maybe you feed me? You look delicious..."

And she smiled so seductively, swinging in my direction, that I involuntarily wondered if I should grant her request.

And then I really wondered, what should I do with her? She doesn't look aggressive or violent, and even though the part I got from the shinobi man in the world explicitly says what to do with enemies, I can't just burn her down with a fireball myself. I just can't do it.

Good quality for a hero, Luca, congratulations, you suck. On the other hand, isn't that the point? Both shinobi and heroes, throughout history, have only approached conflict resolution from a position of strength, and it's never ended well. Only Naruto was able to break the chains of hatred and make peace. So shouldn't I try to act similarly and use my word first and then my fists when there's simply no other way?

"What's the matter, you scared by me?" - Noticing that I didn't answer, the slime moved even closer, spreading its arms wide. - "Don't worry, you'll love it, and you won't want to leave."

I seemed to have her full attention. That's good, we can play a little. And also get her away from the village and find out if she's as harmless as she looks.

"You want me to feed you, don't you?" - Squinting slyly, I ask mamono. - "Then catch me first!"

I turn around and run into the thicket.

"A-a-a-a-a... uh..." - he whispers in my back to Mamono, who hadn't expected such a meanness. She recovered quickly, though, and her predatory instincts kicked in. - "Stop!"

"I'll consider your offer if you can get me!" - I don't stop running, I shout loudly to her and don't speed up so that she doesn't lose my body from sight.

"I'll catch you anyway!" - The annoyed slime girl yelled after me, who, despite my "help", could not catch up with one quick boy.

I had to slow down even more and pretend to gradually get tired, and judging by the satisfied shouts behind me, the girl believed in my little trick. When there were a few dozen meters between us, I pretended to stumble and rolled carefully landed near the trunk of a local oak tree and turned to face the girl-slimey, who, with a smile on her face and the look of a proud winner, was walking-swimming in my direction.
