Chapter 143: Reunion of Raid.

[The Day of Night Slash vs. Genesis]

:: Guys, the last objective of this mission is to prevent the nuclear missile from crashing in the city and I will be the one doing it. Well, I just remembered something... Didn't you guys say this is the team's last mission... It looks like it's my last mission as well:: Shido's sent a message to all the teammates' communication devices and soon they saw Shido flying up in the sky with Genesis in his grasp.

It took them a while to understand what he meant by that but when the realization hit them, it was like a thunderbolt struck them. And the first one to realize what was about to happen was Kaina. 

"Shido-Nii,,, Wait!" shouted Kaina in the group channel but Shido didn't respond at all.

She had a bad prenomination about this and she hoped it doesn't happen but the moment she saw Shido carrying the nuclear missile on his shoulder towards the sky, her mind stopped working. She, without a second thought, activated her Jet Boots and flew straight up towards Shido. She operated the boots at full-thrust speed.

She stretched her hands towards him, hoping she would be able to reach him this time and won't let him go again. But the distance between them only increased as the time passed.

The feeling of hopelessness started to encroach on her mind and memories of the past started to pass by her sight.

"Dad, is Shido-Nii okay now? How's his health? Can we meet him tomorrow?" asked a little Kaina to her father.

But instead of replying, he just stood there.

"...Dad?" Kaina called her father worriedly.

"...You... Why did you never report the teachers about this? The Quirked kids bullying Shido..." asked Kaina's father in a low tone. It was evident that he was suppressing his anger. The reason for his anger was apparent. Shido's family and he were friends for a very long time. The friendship was for so long that Kaina and Shido know each other since Shido was adopted. 

"...I did... but they didn't do anything..." Kaina replied but her voice trembled as she saw her father. She had never seen her father this angry.

"I get it he didn't tell anybody about it because he feared the bullies but you could've told us, right?"

"... I thought I could save him... from the bullies," replied Kaina with her head low.

"Then how was it? The one you wanted to save is now in the hospital with a cracked skull. You know Kaina, everything could've been prevented if you just stopped playing hero and told us what was happening!" shouted Kaina's father.

"I-I just wa-wanted to save him... I thought I could," Tears welled up in Kaina's eyes.

"And you couldn't! You couldn't save him!" Kaina's father shouted again.

Listening to this, tears started dropping off Kaina's eyes and slow sobbing sounds could be heard. Seeing his daughter cry suppressed his anger a bit.

"You don't need to blame yourself for it," He tried to calm Kaina down a bit, "...and you won't be able to meet him again anymore." This made Kaina raise her head. 

"Due to the injuries, Shido-kun has forgotten everything related to the incident... including you. So the Kanzaki family is moving to some other city to prevent him from encountering those bad memories again," stated Kaina's father.

"Then... I won't be able to meet him ever again?" asked Kaina.

"I don't know..."

"Not again... Not this time..." She continuously murmured and operated the Jet Boots at Overdrive mode burning the fuel at a very rapid rate and putting the machinery at a heavy load.

Tears welled up again in her eyes as they did when she was a kid. It felt like everything was happening over again, She again was about to lose him. In desperation, she tried to increase the output of Jet Boots but she noticed, that instead of feeling the increased speed, she felt she was slowing down. 

Kaina looked down and saw smoke coming out of the Jet Boots. She kicked them hoping they would start working again but they didn't. Her ascend stopped and she started falling down. Soon, Shido disappeared into the sky.

Even if everything seemed hopeless as he carried a nuclear missile to space, She still had a bit of hope left in her heart. She extended her hand in hopes he would come back and hold her hand. But then,

*BOOM*

The Nuclear Missile detonated, shattering away all the hope that she had.

[A Day Later]

At the Temporary Night Raid Base, Knuckleduster, Danjuro, Gru and La Brava sat in the living room, and in front of him sat Silas Ramsbottom, Director of Anti-Villain League (AVL).

"...I came here to thank you for helping out with the whole fiasco, but currently I am at a loss of words. It all started with El Macho and ended with Genesis. This whole thing... The whole of the US would've collapsed if it wasn't for you people. For that, I am sincerely thankful to you all and I also wholeheartedly apologize for the attitude I've shown towards you throughout the mission. It was my own negligence that my own secretary was Genesis' aid--"

"Get to the point Ramsbottom... I don't have the time for this," said Knuckleduster with his head on his forehead.

"*Sigh*... I had an important thing to tell you but I think one of you is not present here. Is she coming?" asked Ramsbottom.

"She won't be coming... She isn't in the mood right now," said Knuckleduster.

Ramsbottom slowly stood up from his seat and took out six cheques onto the table. "Each check is of 2 million dollars... One is there for Night Slash's family. To prevent his family's information from coming out, you can cash out this check with an anonymous account and then send them the cash."

"So... this is all it comes down to? Money?" growled Knuckleduster.

"No Mr. Oguro... this is just a formality that I had to do. To show how thankful we are, the AVL has decided to destroy your records completely from our database--" 

"And what about the Japanese Database? You cannot just delete our files from their database, can you?" asked La Brava.

Just as her question ended, Ramsbottom threw 4 folders in front of them. When they saw the contents of the folders, they looked at Ramsbottom for an explanation. "Except for Mr. Gru, You all are now KIA (Killed In Action) by the Pentagon. We found that the Japanese Government has no idea about your real identities. Sorry about killing your vigilante character but clearing your real identity's criminal records and killing your vigilante identity was the best gift we could think for you. For Ms. Nova (Kaina Tsutsumi), we had to 'kill' her and make a completely new identity for her.

Now you are clean as a regular person. I wish you all the very best in your new life. Also, there will be a plane ready to drop in Japan in a few hours," Ramsbottom then moved towards the main door.

"If you wish anything more, just give me a call," as he turned the knob. "Who launched the missile?" asked a cold and emotionless voice.

He turned and found Kaina standing on the staircase. Unlike others, she still wore her Vigilante suit and she had ruffled hair and tear marks running down her cheeks. Her eyes had lost the usual luster and now it was all darkness. 

Ignoring her appearance, Ramsbottom turned and replied, "It's top-tier classified information, but I think you should know... It was Vice President Caster Rogers, father of Adam Rogers aka NRG. Rogers colluded with Genesis from the start. We still don't know Genesis' real identity but I don't think we need it anymore."

"Where is he?" asked Kaina as she activated her Quirk and a rifle popped out of her elbow.

"You don't need to worry about it... Caster Rogers and the Generals who agreed for the Nuke Launch are now being arrested--" Ramsbottom's phone ringed once. He took it out and read the notification, "--And it seems Caster Rogers committed suicide during his arrest."

After the small meeting with Ramsbottom, Night Raid boarded the plane and were now about to land in Japan. But even the relief of returning home was not that comforting to them.

More pressing issues were now in front of the team. Kaina was now like a doll that only knew to breathe and the last time she talked was to ask Ramsbottom the location of Caster Rogers and there was another thing,

"Who will break the news of his death to his daughter?" asked Knuckleduster and started looking around the faces of the team members. Kaina was out from the start, then Danjuro and La Brava are the remaining ones.

"I will do it..." said La Brava with determination, "She sees me as her elder sister... I think I should act like one." Danjuro held La Brava's hand to show his support.

The Plane landed at the Musutafu Airport at night. The team members came out of the terminal wearing normal clothes as there was nothing to fear now. When they were about to go come out of the airport, 

"LaLa Nee-Chan!" an excited Eri ran up to La Brava and hugged her tight. This may have been a happy thing for La Brava but currently, she was perplexed. She knew she had to confront Eri with the news but she didn't prepare for such a sudden encounter.

"Eri... Chief... I mean your dad... He... He"

"Yeah," Eri pointed her hand, "He is there."

When La Brava traced where Eri was pointing and saw it, her eyes widened. In the distance, Shido was standing with Himiko, with a placard in his hands, which had the names of the teammates written on it.

Seeing La Brava was looking at him, He slightly waved at her. La Brava dumbfoundedly waved back. She then turned to Knuckleduster and Danjuro to check if what she was seeing was true.

"This bastard..." muttered Knuckleduster while slightly shaking his head.

When La Brava turned to Kaina, she was not there. She then saw Kaina straight-up running from where she was and jumping at Shido. She tightly hugged Shido and started crying. Shido could only pat her back as there was nothing else he could do.

"Papa cheating on Mama?" asked Himiko.

'Where do they even learn these things from?' complained Shido in his mind.
