[Elira POV]

For all beings who strive to climb the stairs of transcendence, the starting line is always the same.

The first step is to spread out your mana to sense the elements within their surroundings and form a connection with one, preferably one that they feel most intimate with. It's a relatively simple process that could be done by anyone with mana, as the elements are almost always abundant within the surrounding.

Once the connection is formed, it will create a spot at the center of their Mana Pool called an Element Root Point, marking the beginning of their journey to power.

After forming a Root Point, one must refine it using their mana. The quality and quantity of one's Mana is the determining factor to how far they can refine the Root Point.

The Root Point on it's own does not have much use, merely strengthening the feeling of intimacy of a person with their specific element. And yet, it is the most important part of a person's path, as it is the base structure that you will build upon.

It's said that a Root Point could be refined up to nine times, but each time it is refined, it requires an exponentially stronger mana for the next stage, to the point that it's nigh impossible for anyone but the truly gifted to really refine it up to the ninth phase. As such, most just settle for what their limit's take them.

After refining the Root Point sufficiently, you can use it to form an Element Gate, the very foundation of your path.

Once you have managed that, then you have officially stepped into the first stage of [Elemental Affinity], Element Infusion, otherwise known as the stage of accumulation.

The Gate formed is dependent on how many times the Root Point was refined. A Root Point refined once becomes a One Sequence Gate, twice refined and it becomes a Two Sequence Gate, and so forth.

Formed Gates have its own rankings, depicting a clear watershed of quality in between.

A One to Three Sequence Gate is called a Lesser Gate, which inevitably limits the heights one can reach.

A Four to Six Sequence Gate is called a Greater Gate, which only those blessed with exceptional Mana could form.

And finally, a Seven to Nine Sequence Gate are referred to as a Zenith Gate, which only the most gifted amongst the well endowed could ever form.

Interestingly, a Nine Sequence Gate is also labeled as a Perfect Gate, and those who could form one is said to be so rare that it's possible for an adventurous person to travel around the world their whole life and never see a glimpse of one.

That said, a Gate's function is very simple, it absorbs elements from the surroundings and filters it into essence, which is then imbued into the mana, strengthening it. A Fire Gate will absorb the fire elements in the surroundings and turn it into Fire Essence, and it's the same case with the other types of Gates.

It's probably fairly obvious, but the higher the sequence of a Gate, the faster it absorbs elements and the purer the essence it filters.

Much like breathing, the Gate does this automatically even without you doing anything, but the process can also be sped up considerably when done consciously.

After forming the first Gate, it's possible for another Element Root Point of a different attribute to be formed, refined, then turned into another Gate. The two Gates will then fuse with one another, becoming a Dual Element Gate. And if you are absurdly talented, you could possible a third Root Point and wield Three elements.

Naturally there are certain limits to forming multiple Gates.

Most people, like me, can only form a connection with one element. It has less to do with your mana and more to do with your innate capacity. Having the mana to form a Nine Sequence Gate won't necessarily mean your body has the capacity to hold another element.

Moreover, the opposition among elements means that once you've formed a Fire Gate, it becomes impossible to form a Water or Ice Root Point as their element will reject you, and vice versa.

Regardless, whether you formed a Multi Element Gate or not, the next step is simple.

Accumulating your Elemental Essence.

I sat amidst a still rock within the center of a clear pond.

Even with my eyes closed, I could feel the ripples forming inside the water all around me, silently resonating with the rhythm of my heartbeat.

Having formed a Seven Sequence Water Gate, a Zenith Gate so to speak, my resonance with the existing water elements around me have been growing considerably.

It's only been three months since its construction, but my mana is almost brimming with Water Essence. Moreover, the pace which the Gate is absorbing the water elements has almost doubled since its first construction.

It was certainly worth waiting till my mana had grown enough to refine my Element Root a seventh time.

Soon, I can begin my first body refinement and step into the second stage.

Since I formed a Seven Sequence Gate, it's possible for me to refine my body seven times. After reaching that point, how strong would I have become?

As my thoughts continued to wander, I suddenly notice that the elements surrounding me began to move sluggishly, as if they were trapped in a mire.

Frowning, I grasped the spear on my lap and cautiously sent out my mana sense to investigate.

Just as I realized the source of the anomaly—

"Woah!"

—I swiftly swung my spear with all my might against the intruder, only for it to be dodged with ease. Finally placing my eyes upon my opponent, I met a familiar figure outside of my expectation.

Despite the seemingly alarmed voice she raised, the invader didn't seem all that fazed with my reaction. A calm smile painted her lips, as her blue eyes remained clearly unperturbed by what just happened.

"That's a bit too harsh, don't you think? That would've sliced my neck cleanly."

"...Luna."

She wore a different clothing than what she'd usually wear, one which was somewhat similar to my own, though mine was a little more tattered than hers.

Moreover, her hair was jet black this time, though it wasn't as surprising as she usually changes it to pink, gold or green at her leisure, I even remember it being pure white when I first saw her.

"What the hell was that for?"

"Isn't that my line? You just waived a spear at me."

"..."

"...Ok, fine. I've given everyone I've met so far today a near heart attack, just wanted to see if that'd work on you."

She shrugged her shoulders with a helpless wry smile.

"Clearly it did not."

'No, it absolutely did.'

My mouth twitched a little, wanting to blurt out a few profanities, but in the end I only heaved a sigh.

"Since you're here, I'm guessing you already have everything prepared."

"Yep, everything is set and ready to go."

"But it's still a little too early. The meeting time we set with Eckra is still a few hours away."

"That just means we have some time to kill, wanna spar?"

"...No thanks, I do not want to get rag-dolled."

She is strong, absurdly so in fact that I'd much rather be beaten senseless by my teacher than fight her. At the very least, my teacher would leave me a few openings and compete with me in a somewhat even manner in an effort to teach me a lesson.

Luna, on the other, would only give a one-sided beat down all the while giving out witty irritating remarks, almost as if to compensate for something.

Given that I can't even tell how wide the gap between us truly is, I suspected that she's one of those legendary beings who had formed a Nine Sequence Gate.

"Since you don't want to have a bit of spar, wanna go around sightseeing in the city? You know, we might not be back here for a while."

"Sure, I didn't have anything planned before the group up anyways."

"Alrighty then!"

Luna excitedly turned around and started to skip her steps forward, which led me to notice the long sheathed object hanging behind her waist.

"By the way, that is a blade right?"

I spoke, pointing to her waist.

"Hmm? Oh, this? Yep, it's a single edge sword called a Katana made primarily for cutting and slashing. This one's even made of specially reinforced Mithril."

"And why exactly do you need a sword?"

Luna is a Sorcerer, and a damn well terrifying one at that. It would be somewhat understandable if it was a shorter blade incase of an emergency, but a close combat weaponry more befitting of a warrior seems a bit excessive of her.

"This, my friend, is called deception tactics. Think about it, if you are ambushing an enemy group, who'd you think is the most detrimental and should be targeted first? The Warrior, the ranger, or the mage?"

"...The Mage."

"Exactly, it's called being unassuming or low-key."

"..."

Considering it's her of all people, its doubtful that the blade is purely for deceiving only.

"Anyways, are we going or what?"

"...Fine."

Shrugging my shoulders, I slowly followed her.

[Luna POV]

Elira had grown quite into a beauty, if I had to say.

Her silk-like purple hair that flowed down to her shoulders look well maintained, complemented by her blue eyes which were a shade darker than mine.

Even though she carried a spear on her back and wore leather armor, which focused more on agility and flexibility, it didn't seem to dampen her charm whatsoever. If anything, it seems to add a bit more to her cool and heroic vibe.

The two of us went around and toured the city, even going to eat on a restaurant. Unfortunately, there isn't much of a surprise since I've already explored everywhere here thoroughly (Secretly or otherwise).

I'd even like to call it a date, though I'm not that shameless (I swear).

Well, after our little mini adventure, we finally went to the designated meeting spot.

There we met Eckra and her group. The carriages that we'd be hopping on was also already parked there, along with their owner and his men.

Eckra's team composed of four members with a surprisingly even numbering of gender, namely two men and two women. Of the men, one seemed like an archer judging by the bow behind him, while the other wielded a Greatsword.

On the other hand, the other woman was likely of a magical profession considering her robe and short staff, while Eckra herself used a spear, which was probably why she and Elyra got along well.

"Sorry Eckra, were we late?"

"Hey, Elyra! No of course not, you're just in time. And, uhm...?"

"It's me, Luna."

"Eh? Did you decide to change your looks? And why the mask?"

"Well, about that. You can probably guess why."

"Hmm... I guess so."

Eckra smiled in a rather mysterious manner, while her groupmates looked at us curiously, remaining silent and allowing us to converse.

"Guys, they're the friends I was talking about earlier, Elyra and Luna."

""Hello/Nice to meet you.""

"And these fellas are my party members."

We greeted each other as Eckra introduced us together. Apparently the mage girl was named Della, while the archer and the swordsman were called Hyug and Morg respectively.

They seemed pretty easy to get along, which was a little unexpected for the most part. While I've never met them prior to this, I've heard Eckra drunkenly complaining about them before, so I sort of braced myself for a more tense meeting, but I guess I was wrong?

Then again, you probably shouldn't take the words of a drunken person to heart.

We were afterwards met with the boss of the caravan, who didn't seem to mind us joining the group ride. He probably had some degree of trust towards Eckra's team, or perhaps he personally didn't think he had anything worth being schemed over.

Though he did ask us to scan our Adventurer's I.D. Card, which got me some curious looks, probably due to the uniqueness of my card.

Now, how does the I.D. card scanning work, you ask?

To understand this, you need to know of the following things.

For one, just as there is an Adventurer's Guild dedicated for travelers, explorers, and monster hunters/zoologists, there's also a Merchant's Guild dedicated for, you guessed it, merchants and businessmen.

And apparently, the Adventurer's Guild and Merchant's Guild have a sort of dealing with one another, which allows for some special interactions between the adventurers and merchants of said guild.

To simplify things, Merchants have a special plaque that functions similar to our Adventurers Card, through which, they can scan an adventurer's card using both the merchant and adventurer's mana.

They designate a destination or a travel route through their guild, and list the members who will be accompanying them, which will then be recorded on the guild's database.

Scanning their card is a sort of short cut for a merchant to add an adventurer to that list, without having to go through the trouble of going to the guild. Though, it's mainly for when a caravan encounters an adventurer while they're travelling outside of the city, since that's somewhat a surprisingly common occurrence.

It's purpose is mostly to show that they are in fact a registered adventurer, and to prevent merchants from lying or hiding about someone's participation.

It also means that, should an adventurer scheme against a merchant, the guild could easily trace it back to them.

Naturally, this isn't a privilege unique to adventurers, since the Merchant's Guild has a multitude of connections to other coalitions, like the Knight's League or the Magic Association.

Practically a given, considering it's a group filled with business oriented people.

In any case, it didn't take that long for us to depart.

Soon afterwards, we were already leaving the confines of the city gate, officially beginning my real adventure to this vast and mystical world.

Hopefully, nothing too extreme happens.

…Oops, that's probably a flag, wasn't it?

"What are you reading?"

Elyra spoke to me while we were sitting on one of the carriages. It had already been a few hours since we left the capital.

The entire time prior, she seemed to have been meditating. Since I didn't want to go to the other carriages and bother the others, I decided to just take out one of the books I brought.

Honestly, I don't know what I was expecting when we first left. I was fairly excited when we were just leaving the city, but that excitement slowly dimmed down once I realized one crucial thing.

There is nothing to do.

I mean, I was already well aware that there probably wouldn't be much issue occurring at this point in time. While bandits and monster attacks do indeed happen, it's not like it happens to every single caravan.

Although this place was some distance away from the capital, there's very few bandits that would be ballsy enough to band together and form a hideout within this perimeter.

You are reading story Mirrored Journey – A Hero & Devil’s Tale at novel35.com

Moreover, the caravan owner has an artifact that wards away most of the weaker monster, making this trip even smoother.

So in the end, I resorted to good old reading to pass the time. Probably not good for the eyes to read on a moving carriage, but considering the specs of this body, I hardly doubt a problem could ever arise.

"I'm reading a book about intermediate level rune chain. Why, curious?"

"No, not really. I was just a little surprised to see you reading so intently."

"Well, it's not like I have much to do other than reading."

"...I guess that's true."

Elira and I conversed for a bit, which took my mind out of the boringness of the trip. Not long afterwards, the carriages stopped at their tracks.

Apparently, the horses drawing the carriages needed a rest, though it can also be a break time for us to do our businesses. We have about thirty minutes before the break ends.

While we were going down the carriage, I told Elira that I was going out to explore for a bit. She didn't seem all that surprised, and only agreed, saying she'll inform the others.

And with that, I was able to leave without any issues.

◊◊◊

Before leaving, I first scouted around the surroundings of the caravan, mainly to make sure that nothing serious might occur while I'm away.

All I found were harmless critters like hares and small birds, which made me all the more realize just how effective the boss's monster repellant was. Might want to ask him where he got it and secure one myself later on.

Of course, this isn't a complete assurance of the group's safety, but it's better than me just waltzing out brainlessly while missing a possible raid.

Besides, I left Elira a token I enchanted so she can call me at anytime incase of an emergency, I'm not that much of an asshole.

Regardless, now completely free from my last remaining mental burden, I finally set out, moving farther and farther away from the group.

Outside of the rough dirt road that our carriages were using, we were mostly just surrounded by trees along with some hills here and there.

Truthfully, I didn't actually have much incentive to leaving the group. There wasn't anything particularly interesting about these woods, and it's not like there's any civilization near here for miles.

It was just that, getting stuffed inside a carriage for hours on end made me want to stretch my wings out for a little bit.

(Not literally of course, I mean I could, technically, but that wasn't what I was trying to insinuate.)

Moving on, as I escaped the boundaries of the caravan, I naturally lost the protection of the monster repellant.

Not wanting to confront any beast for the time being, I activated the presence dampening effect of my necklace, while simultaneously casting a concealment spell as an added layering.

Honestly, just one of them is already effective enough around these parts, so using both is just overkill. Then again, you can never be too sure of anything.

Venturing around, as one would expect, was mostly a disappointment. Nothing I found tickled my fancy, nor did I see anything out of the ordinary either.

Well, excluding the group of Dire Worms that I passed by earlier, which were each as large as a small anaconda and had rows of shark like teeth for a mouth.

Seeing them curl and coil around each other, while slimy mucus covered their body was, for obvious reason, less interesting and more disgusting and gross, so I just stayed the f*ck away from them.

At the pace I was going, it didn't take long for me to eventually come across a lake.

Now, this lake, at first, was not really any sort of significant find. I was initially going to pass it by as well, but then I noticed something rather intriguing about it, specifically underneath the lake.

You see, even though I was pretty much walking aimlessly like a headless chicken, I had my mana sense constantly scoping around me at all times.

Meaning, instead of just my normal senses relaying information, I was also able to 'see' the area surrounding me, including of course, above and below.

(Which was also, regretfully, how I saw those slimy f*cks. It didn't help that I had an extremely clear and detailed 'vision' of them.)

While the lake itself was fairly normal, I found that underneath it lied a cave. One that was quite unnatural and basically had 'Manmade' written all over it.

It would be a crime if I didn't explore it, and so I dived under the depths of the water, quickly reaching it without hurdle. Naturally, I also made sure to create a protective bubble so I don't get wet.

Now, while the cave was underneath the lake, it's tunnel wasn't submerged in water. Even casually walking, it didn't take that long for me to reach the end of the tunnel.

Lying outside of the tunnel was an open space, just about the size of a lecture hall.

It was mostly empty, though I could see some old dilapidated objects lying here and there. They were likely some sort of furniture that degraded overtime.

Searching around, I found a few smaller room-like spaces connected to what I'm going to assume was the main hall, which were unfortunately also empty for the most part.

It was growing increasingly clear that this place was an abandoned hideout that someone used, though considering how shabby and neglected it was, it might've been years if not decade since the person who used to live here left.

Well, it being abandoned was also how I was able to sense it so effortlessly. Had someone still been using it, there was no way they would make it so easily noticeable, much less simple to access.

Now, interestingly enough, other than the main hall and the connected rooms, there seems to be yet another area underground.

I've been going around the rooms just to find how to reach the area below, though it hasn't really been going well for me just yet. I mean, I could've probably just drill down, but I didn't want to damage the integrity of the place, lest it collapses atop my head.

…Well, that, and I was also hoping for some puzzle or maze involving this cave.

I continued my exploration, to no avail.

Honestly, if I didn't 'see' an obelisk like object, which was absolutely not naturally formed, situated in the lower area, I might've mistaken it for another cave system all together.

It was far enough away from where I am that my mana sense which I was burrowing underground could barely see through it.

Knowing I didn't exactly have all day, I gave up and just decided to dig through it.

I took off the black glove and rolled up the sleeve on my left hand, revealing a wrist fully engraved with all 45 known runes, inscribed in a special ink which subtly glowed in the dark.

Magic is, by far, the most migraine inducing subject that I've ever had to learn. So much so, that even now I'm still barely trying to comprehend half the damn shit I was taught.

And one of my greatest gripes that will probably annoy me till the end of my days, is none other than how mind-bogglingly precise each runes have to made in order for it to actually be usable.

Each stroke, lines, curves, and edges making up the rune has to be extremely precise in both the shape and size in comparison to one another, otherwise its no different from a doodle holding no effect or use whatsoever.

If it were just one single rune, this wouldn't be all that difficult, but keep in mind that a spell is made up of multiple runes. Moreover, the higher the circle of the spell, the more numerous the runes forming it.

You don't exactly get a leeway to make a mistake in battle, nor is the enemy just gunna stand there and watch you make runes one by one.

It's no wonder that most standard mages just resort to inscribing ready-made spell formations on a wand, staff, clothes, and/or accessories, activating them in the midst of battle.

That's not to say that there aren't sorcerers that can cast spells on the fly. In fact, it's the usual goal that mages must strive to reach, usually taking years if not decades of practice.

It's typically done by manually writing runes through sheer mental capacity, that or just ludicrous hand and finger writing speeds.

(It still boggles me how someone can actually write runes using all ten fingers at the same time, let alone at such absurd speeds.)

I myself can already form about 24 to 25 runes at once, which is enough to form most 3 circle spells and even some of the more basic 4 circle spells. But even then, it's with a 60-70% accuracy.

Fortunately for all aspiring mages, having a Mana Brain makes all things involving spells much easier, as aside from it's usual perks as a mana pool, it also enhances thinking speed, memorization, comprehension, and other things usually involving the brain.

Sadly, despite the few years I've put into this discipline, I'm still far from being able to cast high level spells at will.

And so, to combat this 'weakness', I had the entire set of runes engraved in my wrist using a special ink.

It's purpose is rather simple, acting as a printer for the runes. When I infuse my mana in any of the runic engraving, it molds the mana into the shape of the runes, which I then use to assemble into a spell.

Don't think this simple and convenient tool is easy to come by, the ink used is obscenely expensive. Mind you, one of the ingredients that went into making this ink was Dragon's Blood, I repeat, that is just one of the ingredients.

This shit required the resources and connections of a kingdom to make.

Ah, truly, the strength of being a princess. Whichever wise man said that being rich is one of the greatest superpower, he is indeed speaking the truth.

In any case,

*Gleam*

The runes inscribed unto my wrist began to glow, and soon, several dozen runes made purely out of mana floated around me, before coalescing into a Runic Formation.

[(Earth Attribute) 4 Circle Spell - (Intermediate) Earth Erosion]

Spells are separated into different categories based on the circles. 1-3 circle spells are called basic spells, 4-6 circle spells are called intermediate spells, and 7-9 circle spells are called advanced spells.

On an interesting note, basic spells only require mana to cast, but intermediate spells and above require elemental essence to cast, meaning you would have to have at least reached the first stage of Elemental Affinity in order to cast even a 4 circle spell on your own.

It also means the intermediate and above spells you can cast is bound to what element you have. For example, had Elira chosen to be a Sorcerer, she would normally only be able to cast water spells.

Granted, there are certain exceptions to this rule, namely Attribute Conversion Type Spells, but those are another matter altogether.

Funnily though, no matter how I try, I cant actually form an Element Point, cutting any chance for me to even reach the first stage.

Fortunately, it seems like the Hero's power can replace elemental essence, moreover, I'm not bound to any specific elements and can cast spells of any attribute.

And yes, that even includes the four higher attributes.

*Crackle*

A part of the solid ground cracked and shattered, becoming sand. Of course, I didn't go through with the spell all the way in order to prevent the sand from just outright dropping into the open area underneath.

Having grounded the earth into dust |_(:3 」∠)_|, I began to cover it with my mana before exerting effort.

The sand floated upwards, forming a small mound to the side and leaving a pit shaped like a cylinder from where they originated from.

I jumped into the pit, casting another round of Earth Erosion and finally entered the space below.

Inside is found... a lot of things?

Unlike the practically barren upper area, the lower area was surprisingly filled with objects. Granted, they were mostly decrepit wooden containers and metalic cabinets that rusted over, I could even see old worn down workbenches of different sizes.

I didn't have the leisure to look over each of them like a game character, so I just spread my mana sense all over the place as I wandered, only to find everything here to be basically unsalvageable.

This place was probably where whoever originally owned this place did research, not that I could actually tell whatever he or she was researching.

As I moved inward, I noticed that, although not by much, the objects around me seemed less and less dilapidated.

It didn't take long for me to find the obelisk which allowed me to notice this place to begin with. After casting my gaze on it, I finally realized why this area was more preserved compared to the upper area.

The obelisk was twice as tall as me, it's point nearly reaching the ceiling, and thick enough that it would require two people to hug it's base. Though its proportions wasn't what caught my eyes.

There were traces of engravings all around it, likely forming some sort of self-sustaining Grand Spell. Although most of the spell formations were already faded and undecipherable, from it's overall outline, I could tell a some tidbits about it.

It probably served a multi-purpose objective, being a maintenance tool to the area as well as concealing this place incase the upper area was invaded.

Moreover, being shaped like an obelisk means that it likely siphoned natural mana from underneath it to sustain itself. Honestly, there's probably more to it than just those, but those were all that I could see from it.

Unfortunately, it's already been inactive for a long time, otherwise I could've studied the Grand Spell that it formed.

Realizing I wouldn't gain much from it, I tore the obelisk down, obtaining the content inside it.

It was a box which also had traces of engraving, and contained inside it was an egg the size of my palm. The egg, of course, was long dead and practically a stone fossil. It likely served as the core of the Grand Formation.

I wandered the area a bit longer and left when I couldn't find anything useful. While I certainly saw a few interesting things here and there that were mostly intact, I couldn't really see much use for them.

In the end, I just took the dead egg, as well as a few more things that were relatively intact as a sort souvenir of sorts and also as a test subject for something I wanted to try.

[Mini-Extra: True Horror]

Having cancelled his original plans for today, Niel arrived back home much earlier than intended.

Though the moment he entered the house, he immediately sensed something amiss. Listening in closely, he could hear a faint but discernable humming.

He narrowed his eyes, taking caution upon realizing the gravity of the situation.

Slowly, he moved towards the source of the anomaly with a silent yet steadfast footsteps. It wasn't long before he reached his destination, merely less than half a minute, yet each second ticked like an eternity as the sound drew closer and much clearer to his ears.

Upon arriving at the scene, he came to find that his apprehensions becoming true.

He could feel his heartrate rising after only a glimpse, his body nearly froze in place yet he forced himself to move, hiding himself at the corner when he realized he could be noticed at any moment.

Before him was his living room, though a few changes took place unbeknownst to him.

All his furniture, from his couch to his table, had been moved to the side, leaving an open space within the middle. Moreover, a few rugs, which should've been situated elsewhere, were added to the floor.

The TV, on the other hand, was soundlessly playing a video that he wasn't quite knowledgeable of.

Yet what caught his attention from the start was not the changes in the room, but rather, the person situated in the middle of it. Someone he couldn't be anymore familiar with.

"...But on the contrary~..."

The person was wearing a wireless headset that completely covered their ears, likely preventing them from hearing Niel's return. Furthermore, they were humming a peculiar cheery song, all the while making strange exaggerated movements like that of a drunk toddler trying to dance.

This was someone who had lost themselves deep into the recess of their mind, falling into their own personal world.

The scene shook Niel to his core, as a slight tremor spread across his body. A sound nearly escaped his lips, but thankfully, his willpower managed to overpower his body's instinctive response.

Hurriedly, he took out his phone from his pocket. His hands were trembling, yet held firmly, unlocking the phone with great effort.

In such a dreadful situation, there was truly only one thing Niel could possibly do, having little to no choice.

He could only hit 'Record' on his phone.

Later on, Lunas was horrified to learn that yet another irremovable stain was added into his dark history.

A/N: Even though Niel learned magic earlier,

Luna = Sorcerer

Niel = Warrior

I wonder why?
