Moving on is easier said than done, especially when everyone doesn’t let me forget about it. Throughout the entire week, I have been the butt of jokes. While my classmates no longer dare to make fun of me, everyone else in school does not hesitate to tease me for it. Until Jane sends a swift kick in their direction and they will stop for a little bit. However, unlike my classmates who will see Jane everyday, those from other classes are not really afraid.
Moving on is also hard when I see Theo in school. Although I have done my best to avoid him, unlike in the past when I would try to follow him, I would still bump into him during common times like assembly and lunch break. Seeing him would constantly remind me of the cold rejection and humiliation I faced.
So when Friday finally arrives, I am more than glad. I am hoping that everyone will forget about this matter over the weekend. Or by Monday, some other big thing in school will happen and it will take the attention off me.
When the last bell of the day rings, I let out a sigh of relief. School is finally over. I am free of teasing for 2 days!
“Nate, what are you doing this weekend?” Wit turns around to ask me as I pack my things.
Before I can answer, Kim helps me to. “Did you forget? Nate and Papa Ngo are moving to their new house tomorrow. I will be going over to help.”
As we are not very well to do and Papa is a Chef who has been investing in his own small restaurant, Papa and I have been living in a rental apartment. But he finally saved up enough money and bought us a 2 bedroom house which he found a really good offer.
“You know we can manage…” As much as I appreciate Kim’s help, Papa and I don’t really have many things. Just some luggages and boxes.
“Nonsense, I will come help. How can I let Papa Ngo and you carry all those things alone? It is my duty as Papa Ngo’s future son-in-law!” Kim says with a proud look. I simply shake my head, letting him live his delusions.
“Right, sorry it slipped my mind. I will need to babysit my brother tomorrow, so I won’t be able to help. I can come over on Sunday to help you unpack.” Wit offers.
“I will come and help too on Sunday. I am working at my part-time job tomorrow.” Jane chimes in.
“Don’t worry about it and yeah Sunday is fine. Come over for lunch.” I reply, standing up and slinging my back over my shoulders.
“Ah, I will come over both days!” Kim says enthusiastically, causing us to chuckle.
“Yeah sure. I got to head home. Papa is still working at the restaurant and I need to finish packing.” I tell my friends.
Kim immediately gets up. “Do you need-”
“No! I can manage. See you tomorrow!” With that, I quickly run out of the classroom before Kim could follow me.

“Okay that’s everything!” Kim says as he loads the last piece of our luggage onto the back of the small truck. Papa borrowed the truck from a friend of his for our moving day.
“Great! Thanks Kim.” Papa claps Kim on the back. The three of us climb in the front with me sitting in the middle.
“I am so excited about this move.” Papa says as he starts driving. “I can’t wait for you to see the new place.”
“Me too.” I smile widely. It will be nice to finally have a home of our own and build new memories.
“I can’t wait to see your new home too.” Kim chimes in.
We spent the next ten minutes of the drive talking about how we are going to decorate the new home.
“We are almost there.” Papa says as he turns into a street. However, the street looks a little dingy and I immediately feel it is…
“This neighbourhood looks a little off…” Kim comments my thoughts out loud.
“Pa, are you sure about this neighbourhood?” I ask my father carefully.
“Yup! The realtor says it is still growing and will soon have a lot of value.” Papa answers cheerfully. “And…501, 502.. we are here… Wait…”
Pa stops in front of an rundown house which had a large sign on it which says: TO BE DEMOLISHED.
My heart sinks right away. Kim also looks stunned.
“What the hell!?” Papa yells as he quickly alights the truck. Kim and I quickly follow suit.
“This… this has got to be some kind of a mistake!” Papa shakes his head. “I will call the realtor!” He takes out his phone from his pocket. Papa makes multiple calls but of course the realtor doesn’t pick up.

“Damn it he is not picking up!” Papa cries out in frustration. Papa turns to me, his eyes slightly teary. “You don’t think…”
I sigh. Of course he was swindled. I knew that deal was too good to be true. I am extremely disappointed too but I know if I show it too much, Papa will feel worse.
“Come on, Pa…” I wrap my arm around his shoulders. “We should just get out of here first.”
I glance at Kim who nods in agreement. “Let’s go back to the restaurant first and we can talk about it. Okay?”
++
We get back to the restaurant since we have nowhere else to go. Our rental apartment has already been leased out to someone else. I also rejected Kim’s repeated offers to go to his house. I can’t owe him anymore. I also rejected Jane and Wit’s offers. I don’t want to trouble my friends.
I also told Kim to leave first so that I can spend time with Papa alone to think about this. I promise to update him, Jane and Wit in the group text when we find a solution.
I set down the cup of tea I made for Papa before him. His face is buried in his hands, the air of despair surrounding him. “I can’t believe I lost all my savings…I just wanted to give you a good home.”
“It’s alright, Pa… Things happen.” I have no idea what else to say. I am disappointed but I don’t blame Papa. He has been trying his best his whole life raising me alone. “We will figure things out together.” I say softly, reaching out to grab his hands.
“Sigh, you should be yelling at me. You’re such a sensible child, Nate. I am really so sorry though…” Papa says sadly. “What are we going to do?”
“Well, we can live in the restaurant for a few days. I will go online and find us another rental place.” I suggest.
At that moment, the bell at the door of the restaurant jingles and the door opens. I thought I put the closed sign. We look up to see a couple entering with wide smiles. I recognise them right away. They are Papa’s close friends from his university days and they have visited our restaurant many times. They are really nice and I would always talk to them when they are here. Aunty Tiffy would also give me a present on my birthday every year.
“Oh, Tan and Tiffy. What are you guys doing here?” Papa asks as he wipes his face of any remaining tears, trying to look presentable. He puts on a smile.
“We were in the vicinity and thought we would have lunch here…” Uncle Tan says. “Are you guys open?”
“Uh, sorry, Uncle Tan and Aunty Tiffy, we are actually closed today.” I answer.
“Did something happen?” Aunty Tiffy glances at some of our luggage at the side. The rest are still on truck parked outside. They seem to have picked up on the atmosphere too.
“Yeah, you look terrible, old friend. What happened?” Uncle Tan asks with worry on his face.
“Why don’t you both sit down and I will make more tea?” I quickly stand up and offer them, remembering my manners.
So Papa tells Uncle Tan and Aunty Tiffy everything. After he finishes, he sighs. “So now, we have to find a place to live. We can’t sleep in the restaurant forever. Well, I can but I am not going to put Nate through that.”
At that moment, Aunty Tiffy startles us when she suddenly claps her hands together. “Come live with us!”
“Oh yes, you are a genius, my wife. You should!” Uncle Tan nods in agreement at his wife’s suggestion.
“What? No, we can’t. I am grateful for your offer.” Papa shakes his head right away and I follow suit. “But I don't want to trouble the both of you.”
“It won’t be any trouble!” Aunty Tiffy says, excitement on her face. “We have extra rooms at our new house. Also, remember I told you guys I have two sons, one of them is Nate’s age. So it will be good company. Plus, I think you guys even go to the same school. And our house is near your school and the restaurant. It will be convenient!” Beside her, Uncle Tan is nodding and smiling.
Wait… their son goes to the same school as I do? I have heard of Aunty Tiffy mentioning her sons but she has never told me one of them is in my school. Maybe I know him. I am about to ask her when Papa starts speaking.
“Oh, it sounds really tempting and it will really help us out… but are you both sure it won’t be trouble? Papa asks carefully.
“Of course!” Uncle Tan says. Come on, Ngo. We have been friends for years and you used to help me out in school so much. And remember, Nala and you loaned me that money for my start-up. Without you guys, I wouldn’t be where I am today.” I heard Uncle Tan owns a company that designs mobile games and my parents loaned him the money to start his business when they graduated.
Papa turns to me. “What do you think, Nate? It is better than sleeping here. Of course, it will just be temporary. Until I save enough money again to buy our own home…”
I glance at Aunty Tiffy and Uncle Tan who are looking at me excitedly, clearly urging me to agree. I nod slowly because it is indeed better than sleeping at the restaurant. Plus, they are really good friends of Papa and I know they are genuinely nice people. “Okay, it is a good solution. We are really grateful for your help, Aunty Tiffy and Uncle Tan.” I say sincerely, smiling at them.
“Yay!” Aunty Tiffy and Uncle Tan cheered. “The house will be so lively with more people. Come on, let’s go over right away. You guys can follow our car.”
As we get moving, I recall that I wanted to ask Aunty Tiffy something earlier but I can’t remember the exact question. I shrug, I guess it will come to me later.
For now, I am just glad we have a place to stay.
