“I’m telling the truth. Once the apocalypse ends and the virus is wiped out, we will still have to go back to studying and take tests,” Jun Zishu patiently advised her roommates. She was sincerely saying this for their own good.
Hearing Jun Zishu’s words, Lin Su hesitated for a moment before she began reciting a sentence in her English textbook: “Today, humans see demons…”
However, before Lin Su could finish reciting the sentence, she got interrupted by Liu Manman as the latter recited: “Canst thou speak human language?”
“That’s enough from you two,” Xu Qiu, who belonged to the Economics Department, couldn’t help but be exasperated by her two friends’ actions, the fear in her vanishing momentarily. The world was coming to an end outside, yet her roommates were here reciting English sentences and classic literature.
“I’m serious. It’s not like you have anything better to do, so why not focus on your studies?” Jun Zishu repeated herself when she saw that Xu Qiu remained unconvinced.
“Will the apocalypse really end?” Liu Manman asked as she looked at Jun Zishu. Normally, she was the closest to Jun Zishu, and she treated Jun Zishu the best out of everyone in the room. This was because she was a sucker for good looks, and she especially liked big brothers and big sisters with excellent appearances.
“It will end,” Jun Zishu said definitively, her beautiful face seemingly glowing at this moment.
Jun Zishu wasn’t lying, though. She knew about the storyline, so she was certain that the zombie apocalypse would end.
“Even if it doesn’t end, we still need to continue living,” Jun Zishu added.
Even if Jun Zishu didn’t know about the plot, she would still think so.
“We must believe that humanity cannot be defeated. We have so many scientists and the army. We also have advanced technology. What are we afraid of? If we can work hard and survive, then those who are stronger than us naturally can as well.”
No matter the time, a person must always have hope in their heart. If a person didn’t even have the will to live, nobody could save them.
“Zishu is right. Rather than mourn, we should try to survive first. If the apocalypse really does end, I’ll still have to face that despicable Band 4,” Liu Manman said in a begrudging tone.
In reality, Xu Qiu wasn’t the one feeling the most depressed. Liu Manman was.
Initially, Liu Manman had applied for the Literature Department because she didn’t wish to see English anymore. However, she never expected that she still needed to face the College English Test regardless.
“But even if the army does come for us, how long will it take for them to arrive?” Liu Manman asked.
“Who knows? Even if the army does launch a rescue, they will have priority targets to rescue. It’s all up to luck,” Jun Zishu answered. Then, to occupy everyone’s minds, she asked, “Where do you guys think the country will choose to save first?”
Xu Qiu: Coastal areas like Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai?
Liu Manman: Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei? The Yangtze River Delta? The Pearl River Delta?
Lin Su: Special Administrative Regions like Hong Kong and Macao?
Their city was located in the southern inland, and the province neighboring theirs consisted of coastal cities. In other words, should the country have the army to conduct rescue operations, their city wouldn’t be a priority target.
“Why do I feel a twinge of despair? Why did I decide to leave the capital in the first place?” Liu Manman complained. Her hometown was in Beijing. However, she had traveled south to attend university to experience what it was like being far from home. Now, though, she couldn’t help but regret her decision.
“What’s there to despair over? Rescue will come sooner or later. Alright, go back to studying,” Jun Zishu said.
“What about you?”
“I’ll play with my phone,” Jun Zishu said as if it were a matter of course. She wasn’t afraid of seeing news about the zombie apocalypse online, so why would she abandon her phone to study?
More importantly, the original owner wasn’t the type to read books. Other than two romance novels she had borrowed from the library, she had no other books on hand. Meanwhile, Jun Zishu wasn’t interested in reading such books at all.
“””No! Study with us!”””
The others protested.
“But I don’t have any books to read. Or do you want me to dance for you?”
“I’ll lend one to you,” Xu Qiu said as she pulled out a thick book from her bookcase and handed it to Jun Zishu.
Jun Zishu took the book and looked at the cover: The Currency War.
Very good.
“I’ll lend one to you, too,” Liu Manman said as she offered Jun Zishu a copy of The History of Ancient Chinese Literature, to which Jun Zishu silently accepted.
“I’ll also—”
“Alright, I don’t need more, thank you,” Jun Zishu said, interrupting Lin Su.
They were all roommates, so was there a need to harm each other so much?
Thus, on this first day of the apocalypse, while the world outside was in chaos, the residents of Room 412 fell into a beautiful atmosphere of studying, all four residents immersing themselves in the sea of learning.
However, half an hour later, Liu Manman sat up and rubbed her stomach.
“I’m hungry. I also want to wash up,” Liu Manman said while massaging her eyes. Unlike Jun Zishu and Lin Su, she and Xu Qiu had still been in bed when the zombie pandemic broke out, so they still hadn’t washed up.
“I’ll go out and take a look,” Jun Zishu suggested. Although it wouldn’t be possible to go out and take a shower in the shared bathroom now, she could still fetch some water back with a basin.
“Don’t!” Liu Manman cried out.
“We’ll have to go out and get water sooner or later. We can’t cook without water.”
“But it’s too dangerous. We also have bottled water,” Liu Manman said.
“That’s for drinking. We need to cherish our water resources,” Jun Zishu said. Then, she got out of bed and tied her hair.
“Don’t go out, Zishu,” Lin Su said as she pulled on Jun Zishu’s hand.
However, Jun Zishu gently broke away and smiled at the other party, saying, “It’s okay. We’ll have to face this problem sooner or later.”
After saying so, Jun Zishu grabbed her fruit knife and got ready to go outside. However, she didn’t follow Ren Nanying’s suggestion to tie the knife to a clothesline since it’d be too cumbersome to wield. Moreover, she felt that she shouldn’t face any problems in close quarters combat with her current body’s nimbleness.
“I’ll just be taking a look. Lock the door once I leave. I’ll knock on the door three times when I come back. Only open the door if you hear three calm knocks. If you hear frantic banging, keep the door shut no matter what, okay?”
“Maybe you should just stay inside…”
The three other girls shivered and pleaded as they looked at the backbone of their group.
“Be good and wait for me to come back.”
However, Jun Zishu ignored her roommates’ pleas and picked up a basin. Then, when she looked at her friends and saw how they were looking at her, she jokingly said, “Can you stop looking at me as if I’m leaving to sacrifice myself?”
“Pah! Pah! Pah! Don’t talk nonsense!” Liu Manman said as she glared at Jun Zishu.
“You guys should say something nice to me instead.”
Xu Qiu: Ah, friend, see you again, see you again, see you again?[1]
Jun Zishu: Buddy, are you serious?
Liu Manman: This child’s a fool. She doesn’t know how to speak.
Liu Manman: I’ll be here waiting for you to come back, waiting for you to come back to look at peach blossoms!
Lin Su: The azure color is waiting for the misty rain, while I’m waiting for you~
Jun Zishu: I’m leaving.
After grabbing a basin, Jun Zishu walked up to the door and opened a small gap.
Help me check for zombies outside, Little Fairy.
[Roger. Blue dots represent humans, while red dots represent zombies.]
As soon as Little Fairy said so, a map appeared in Jun Zishu’s mind, showing the layout of the floor Jun Zishu was on. Currently, there were five red dots on the corridor outside.
Today was Monday, and the zombie outbreak occurred when classes were in session. So, while some people might have run back to the dormitory after the zombie outbreak occurred, there still weren’t many people in the dormitory buildings.
When Jun Zishu opened the door, the sound of the door opening attracted the attention of the zombies outside. Then, after smelling the scent of a living person, the zombies began walking toward Jun Zishu excitedly.
Jun Zishu’s room was relatively close to the public bathroom. Before the zombies could reach her, she quickly ran into the bathroom, put the basin under a tap, and twisted the tap open. Then, she stuck herself close to the wall and checked the red dots on the map in her mind.
Was Jun Zishu afraid? Of course not. She had traveled across many worlds already, so there was no way she would be afraid of a few measly zombies. Not to mention, she even had cheat buffs that prevented her from getting infected and allowed her to kill zombies in one hit.
The first zombie to enter the bathroom was a slightly short and chubby girl. Half of the girl’s face was missing, and blood stained the pajamas she wore. Jun Zishu stabbed the girl’s head with her fruit knife without hesitation, her sure-kill buff triggering and causing the zombie girl to drop dead immediately.
Before Jun Zishu could sigh in relief, two more girls entered the bathroom, the two making growling sounds as they looked at Jun Zishu excitedly.
Saliva continuously dripped from the two zombies’ opened mouths, and their nails looked greenish-black and abnormally long. Jun Zishu also smelled a strong rotten stench as the two zombie girls pounced at her.
Relying on her flexibility and softness, Jun Zishu evaded the zombie girls’ attack by bending backward. Then, she promptly righted her body and stabbed one of the zombies in the back of the head.
One down, one more to go.
Putting a foot on a short bucket as leverage, Jun Zishu pulled at the remaining zombie girl’s long hair in an attempt to make her fall. However, the zombie girl was surprisingly agile as she twisted her upper body around and clawed at Jun Zishu.
Oh? Is she from the Dance Department? Jun Zishu wondered in surprise. Unfortunately, the zombie girl’s face was messed up, so Jun Zishu couldn’t tell if this person was from the same department.
After evading the zombie girl’s clawing attack, Jun Zishu looked toward the basin and saw that it was almost full. So, she stepped onto the bucket one more time and jumped into the air. Then, she plunged the fruit knife into the zombie girl’s head as she fell.
Jun Zishu felt that the cheat ability she received was very useful.
In reality, her fruit knife wasn’t particularly sharp. However, thanks to her cheat ability’s assistance, she could easily stab her knife into the zombies’ heads as if she were stabbing tofu.
Now that Jun Zishu had taken care of three zombies, there were two left in the corridor. However, probably because they had slow reactions, they didn’t hobble over like the other three.
After the basin was filled, Jun Zishu turned off the tap and cleaned her fruit knife with a nearby rag. Then, she walked out of the bathroom carrying the basin with both hands.
On her way back, Jun Zishu noticed that some of the other rooms on the floors still had zombies in them. However, these zombies were locked inside and couldn’t get out, so they could only bang and thump at their doors repeatedly, creating a series of terrifying noises.
There were also some rooms with their doors wide open. These rooms had neither humans nor zombies inside.
When Jun Zishu walked past a trash can, she quietly rested the basin on it and reached for an empty tin can inside. Then, she threw the tin can to the other end of the corridor, attracting the two remaining zombies away from her.
After returning to her room with the basin, Jun Zishu set the basin on the floor and gently knocked on the door three times. Then, someone inside the room promptly opened the door for her.
When Liu Manman saw that Jun Zishu had returned safe and sound, she sighed in relief and carefully looked around outside. Then, she bent down and pulled the basin into the door.
Meanwhile, after taking one last look at her surroundings, Jun Zishu quickly entered the room and locked the door behind her.
“You nearly scared us to death. It’s a good thing you came back safe,” Liu Manman said in a huff.
“Of course I’ll come back. You guys are still waiting for me to come back and look at the peach blossoms and misty rain, after all.”
“I never knew you were such a brave and heroic person,” Xu Qiu said.
“I have always been brave and heroic, thank you very much. You two-scoop some water with your cups and wash up first,” Jun Zishu said as she looked at Liu Manman and Xu Qiu. Then, she turned to Liu Su and continued, “Susu, get the pot ready. We’ll cook some noodles.”
“Okay.”
“Did you come across any zombies outside?”
“I did. All you need to do is stab them in the head,” Jun Zishu said as she waved her fruit knife around.
“I’m worried that I can’t bear to attack them,” Liu Manman said with an anxious look on her face. These zombies used to be living and breathing people, so she worried that she might hesitate when it came time for her to attack them.
“They’ve become monsters already. They don’t have the ability to think, and their only purpose in life is to spread their virus,” Jun Zishu said as she wiped the remaining bloodstains on her fruit knife with a paper towel. Then, after throwing the paper towel into the trash, she sighed ruefully as she said, “Also, how sentimental of you to have such thoughts. As expected of a literature student.”
“You are going to be hammered to death by the thousands of students in our Literature Department if you keep behaving like this!”
