The locals called me Arakan Aono, and by the locals, I meant my mother and father. My first memories were of being born, and those weren't fun. Currently, I was riding on a horseless carriage called a bus, sliding between adventures beside my clueless girlfriend stealing little brother. An aura of evil practically swallowed the bus whole, and for a while, I thought we would be taken to an honest the gods demon cult. That was until the bus burst out of the tunnel into a world straight out of a horror movie. Then, as the bus pulled to a stop, I received an update.

…
At the age of 1, when others still barely had a grasp on the world, I faced a terrible struggle.
I didn't like the new system. Most of my skills were gone, there were no skill trees, all my items were gone, and I had no stats. Biting into a fruit of the gods hadn't turned out as well as I had hoped. My system was completely different, and cultivation had never been more challenging. All I had left that could level up was my class.

I did the only thing I could. I tried to call upon my qi reserves but found only a pitiful spark where there had once been an inferno. So as a newly reincarnated year old, I did the only thing I could; I waved my fists, threw a tantrum for an hour, and woke up my little brother. Our mother rushed into the room in a frenzy.
At the time, all I did was beat my hands against my bed and scream. Then she picked me up, and I looked at her. She was worn but putting on a brave face. After moving in and out of consciousness for the first year of my life, the first thing I did was throw a tantrum and scare the poor woman. My mother hummed a song, slowly lulling me back to my former calm.
Once I was back in bed, and everything returned to quiet, I let myself think. There was no telling what was out there in the wide world. If I wanted to have a ghost chance of surviving, I needed to get my power back. And my mother clearly needed her sleep.
I thought back to what I did when I first learned qi control. Before I could unleash my aura, my father told me to feel for the power and get comfortable with it. The more familiar I was with my qi, the better; this time, I was starting out much earlier. It took me 4 years to gain any progress, but I knew many more tricks than back then. This wasn't learning from scratch.
That's the spirit master focus on what you can control, not what you can't. When we became unstuck from the original system, I had to take what I could and get out of there. Sorry, but what you have is all I could manage, but that doesn't mean we don't have new functions that the old system didn't have. So you can increase your skills much further than before.
It took me 11 years to take qi control from level 1 to 100, which was considered a beginner skill. Qi manifestation, a more advanced skill, had only reached lvl100 because I gained a source of near infinitely regenerating qi. Unless there were monsters in the world, I wouldn't be able to do that again. I really couldn't imagine what qi control could do beyond lvl100.
Getting my power back before something happened to my family was first on the agenda. So, I closed my massive, adorable anime eyes and focused inward on my little spark of qi. It was worse than I thought; as a newborn, I had little energy to do anything else but huddle. I would like to say reincarnation has enhanced my qi in some way. But if anything, it felt weaker than it had been when I first started leveling qi control. With it this frail, I didn't even want to touch my other skills.
After a few minutes, my view of my little spark of qi became blurry. Meditation was boring, especially when I couldn't do anything with my qi. But, even if I did, it was monotonous; something was better than nothing. I would like to say I could divide my qi and create two sources or find some celestial straw to throw on my little spark of qi, but I fell asleep.

For the next year, off and on, I worked on feeling my qi, and as I grew older, that spark became a little more stable. Meditation was boring, and I had to work up to it. No, I didn't move into a cross-legged position like a little Buddha that would expose me as not being a one-year-old. At that age, I thought exposure would lead to my being abandoned in the woods. That would have been a godsend compared to the experimental laboratory I would have been sent to.
So, while I relearned how to walk and Tsukune began following me around like a lost duck, I explored the new world from the safety of our apartment. I was amazed by the sights. Buildings towered into the heavens unafraid of angry gods. Humans walked around in herds without a warrior in sight, and I felt the fringes of a dangerous presence.
I started screaming and beating against the glass. My mother rushed in and pulled me away, looking for threats where there were none. A dark presence settled over the horizon; compared to it, I was as powerless as an ant.
"Arakan, what's wrong?" Mother asked.
"Monster," I said in fright, and she calmed down.
"Arakan, there are no such things as monsters." Mother said with absolute certainty. The darkness hadn't subsided; if anything, it rose and fell like the tide from an incredibly dark sea.
Lu Zhi, how high can a skill advance?
The ranks are beginner, intermediate, apprentice, adept, master, sovereign, deva, angel, and almighty. By raising the ranks of your skill, you can become more powerful than you ever were before without levels or stats. That's why I went all-in with this feature. Think about how qi enhancement will help you once it's unlocked. At the same time, any skill that uses qi will feed into qi control.
At the age of three, my qi was just stable enough for me to touch it and start spreading it slowly through my body. It wasn't quite qi enhancement yet. That would have to wait until I got a real handle on my qi control. There were stories of people blowing their arms off because they weren't ready for a skill. But I really wanted to get my power back.
Qi control: Beginner 30%
Gaining any qi control when my qi was so weak was a herculean effort. Just moving my qi through my body left me exhausted and my qi flickering like a candle in the wind. But after the exorcise, the qi would always grow just a little stronger. It wasn't quite like a muscle, but it could break if I wasn't careful. So, once it started flickering, I left it alone and played.
As it turned out, I could play like any toddler despite my occasional higher thought; my mind was that of a toddler. Sometimes I forgot where I came from, and my past became blurry. Memories of the people I knew and my prior family became distant things. Soon I knew it would be exceedingly difficult to remember much of my past life. That sparked my interest in writing.
Those thoughts brought me to the kitchen, where my mother was doing the dishes from lunch. I approached her and tugged on her jeans. She turned her attention to me. "Arakan, what do you need?"
"I want to write."
"Your birthday is coming up soon. Can you wait a little longer?" I grimaced on the inside, knowing that the longer I waited, the less of my past I would remember.
That day came along, and Tsukune was given a new video game while I gained an early writing set. I took to it, mastering the lessons quickly before jotting down what little I could remember. At four, it was a struggle to get names, but I could remember powers and abilities I knew of easily.
After a while, the only things I remembered were what I had written down. Over time I recopied and rewrote a lot of my histories. Fighting styles and unique items became distant while I struggled to reach the next stage in qi control.
Qi Control: Beginner 56%
At age 5, my qi had become much more stable, and I could slowly spread it throughout my body without it flickering. My past life was reduced to the few pages I managed to scrounge together. Then, my new level of strength caused my qi control to explode. I gained 2-5 percent every week, and my qi kept growing. I knew I could continue to raise my qi, and soon even the presence would cower before me.
The more my qi control rose, the cockier I became. My small body was a bit tougher and stronger than Tsukune, and I was a little more active. But I wasn't anything special; kids at the park could run faster than me. So, I wasn't sure how much good my qi was doing my body.
A bully punched Tsukune on the playground. He was a year older than us and wanted Tsukune's video game. His hands were on it, pulling it from Tsukune's gasp. I didn't think I ran up and punched the kid in the face. Instead, the kid screamed and ran to the parents.
I was grounded from writing for a week, but Tsukune shared his game with me.
