There was no shortage of food in this mysterious world.

No shortage of ordinary money either. One round outside by Desmond or Sonia, and they never returned with their pockets empty. It’s Wizard money they desired. And no amount of rounds and wanting could help them in that regard.

The time was approaching evenfall. Arlen was sitting alone in the middle of the hall, with Simon standing by his side. From time to time, they shared a hissing mumble. Kai tried to make out what they were saying, but he had never learned to read lips.

“Arlen will kill us if he thinks this mission is a failure,” Desmond’s voice came from his side. “How the hell did those three die there?!” Sonia was on duty in the basement, and Shae was still buried in books.

The question had a puzzled tone, but Kai knew what Desmond was trying to imply.

“I don’t know, Desmond,” Kai shrugged. “Maybe it is what they are saying. They got killed by a snake. This is a magical world. Who knows what truths lie under the guise of falseness?”

“How can that be?” Desmond pressed his brows. “I could feel her power. She was stronger than me. If I didn’t have my Skill, you would have only found pieces of me in the alley.”

“Then why is the Wizard’s Council taking so much interest in it,” Kai threw out a wild guess. “Maybe the snake wasn’t an ordinary creature.”

“You mean…” Desmond’s eyes shone with understanding.

“It was a Shop of Hundred Wonders, right?” Kai said meaningfully. “Who says magical creatures aren’t wonders?”

That shut up Desmond. Kai let out a hidden sigh of relief. For a brute, Desmond has learned to overcome his weakness by asking questions after questions.

“You were right, though,” Desmond said. “Even if we had failed the side-mission, Arlen had collected all the brooms he wanted. Sonia found two of them at her end.”

They failed the side-mission, anyway. Kai looked at the three brooms leaning against the wall. They all had around 5-6 ft long wooden shafts, the broom bristles were disheveled twigs, running and pointing in random directions. Kai had refused to believe these ordinary things could fly until Sonia climbed one of them and hovered above the floor for a full minute.

Kai wanted to fly too.

In his previous life, his red armor was one of the few that had the innate ability to fly. And now, he longed to have that feeling again. So when he saw a path opening itself to him, he lunged at a spare broom.

“Still thinking about it,” Desmond smiled, his old smile returning to him. “You can’t just fly a broom because you want to.”

Everyone had laughed, even Arlen, forgetting the rage he had shown, when Kai had fallen face-first after jumping high towards the ceiling. Kai still felt the brooms had wronged him, especially when Shae had taken the third one and had flown it in circles.

“How can they be so magical?” Kai took out his frustration on the innocent brooms. “They didn’t even have Stats over them.”

“Haha!” Desmond roared in a way unique to him. “The presence of Stats just means that an Item can be taken outside the world and can be stored into Inventory. It doesn’t mean it isn’t powerful. Some things aren’t so clearly stated by the Systems. So don’t do anything stupid.”

The mention of ‘stupid’ reminded Kai of the thing he was about to do before the ambush. The potion. He had completely forgotten about it.

“Desmond,” Kai whispered. “I think I sensed a potion that might have been an Item in that shop.”

“It was a half-magical shop,” Desmond shrugged, gesturing what else was Kai expecting of it. But then Desmond’s eyes squinted suddenly. “Wait, you didn’t touch the potion, did you?”

Kai shook his head.

“Sigh,” Desmond’s shoulders relaxed, seeing that. “Good, most of the magical things in shops like that are enchanted. The moment someone touches them without chanting the proper incantation, they will be cursed. Why do you think Arlen hadn’t raided the shop by now? Potions are very powerful. Some can raise Attributes permanently, even the Passive ones.”

A strange creepy feeling overtook Kai, thinking of what fate he had avoided.

“Oh, yes, that reminded me,” Desmond said, flexing his left shoulder up and down. “Shae has already completed her both side-missions. And we have failed one of ours.”

Desmond showed a guilty smile, and Kai knew what he was talking about.

Finally, Kai thought, bringing all his concentration on Desmond.

“Triggered Skills are again subdivided into two types by the Contestants,” Desmond spoke. Shae must have overheard something, for she came almost running to hear more. Desmond didn’t mind, and Kai couldn’t have cared less. “First is Charged Triggered. They need to be charged with MP or SP or even HP sometimes before unleashing them. The more you charge them, the more powerful they will be.”

Desmond winked at Kai, giving his shoulder a side glance. Shae was standing behind Desmond, not noticing any of this. But Kai understood the meaning. He understood even more than Desmond wanted to tell.

So, the spell used by that witch was Charged Triggered, Kai reflected. No wonder the second use felt less dreadful than her first attack on me. No, Kai corrected himself, it was the third use. Desmond must have faced the full might of that Skill before me.

“Sonia told me about them,” Shae spoke timidly, blushing, looking at Kai. “The other type is Instantaneous Triggered. These Skills devour a certain number of Points the moment you unleash them, making them the quickest and the deadliest too.”

“Shae’s right,” Desmond nodded. “Either use them when you have an ample amount of Points left or don’t use them at all. In a fight, it is hard to keep track. And by accident, if you were to bring down your MP or SP to zero, or even HP for god’s sake, then you are done for sure.”

Kai wanted to ask about Titles too but then thought better of it. Then Desmond mumbled something, and the notification popped in front of Kai.
