For power, men tend to become someone they once hated the most.

You were right, mother, Kai thought. I’ve long since joined the ranks of these men too.

“Hahaha!” Arlen laughed madly. “You! You two! Worms, do you think you two can take me on by just catching me off guard?”

Arlen eyed Sonia, and then his head turned to look at Desmond. It took little to guess that Sonia and Desmond were working together. At last, Kai found Arlen looking at him, the dagger in his hand, and Simon’s throat at the blade’s edge.

“You just wait.” Arlen said, threatening Kai. “I will flay you alive, Blood Demon. I, Arlen, will give some meaning to your name.”

There was a bitterness in Arlen’s tone. His jaws were clenched tight, and his wand-hand was shaking in rage. Kai felt the danger Arlen was letting out. One wrong move and Arlen could kill any of them. He would kill all of them.

“Humph!” Sonia snorted. “Keep your threats to yourself. Just disarming me doesn’t give you the right to blabber nonsense.”

“Nonsense, is it?” Arlen said, the surrounding threat intensifying suddenly. “You think I only know the Disarming Charm? You two are fools.”

“You are right. They are.”

This was an unknown voice. Kai’s mind spun towards the darkness beyond the first carriage. The moonlight wasn’t as clear as it was yesterday, but Kai could see it. That figure. It walked towards them, juggling 3 Explosive Kunais in its hands.

Step by step, it came close and stopped at Arlen’s left. The three Kunais were in the air, and then they were not.

“You’ve lost my gifts, Sonia,” the figure said, a man’s voice. “Well, your loss.”

Arlen’s eyes were wide, shocked beyond belief. His hands were trembling like never, and in his rage, a stream of fresh blood escaped out of the wound on his head.

“Traitors…” Arlen muttered. “You fucking TRAITORS!” he roared.

Kai saw a hint of himself then. A blurry hint of himself embedded in Arlen’s lone figure.

“Desmond,” Kai called out. “Who is he?”

“Haha!” Desmond laughed, the terrifying gold in his eyes on the brink of bursting out. “He is a friend. You just keep Simon in check.”

Or you will die too, Kai knew what Desmond was implying.

“Now we aren’t just two,” Sonia said, taking a step towards Arlen. “Even you, a 3rd floor’s Contestant with a false wand, can’t compete with three 2nd floor’s peak Contestants.”

They were right.

Kai could feel the three combined were a deadly combination. Sonia had already injured Arlen and had made him use a Skill. Desmond could fire the Minor Soul Shaker anytime. It seemed he had already Charged it to its limit. And the figure, the man, was the strongest of the three.

If not for a miracle, Arlen was a man destined to die.

If…

Sonia’s stride turned into a dash. But she hadn’t even taken the third step when she stumbled, falling on the ground, rolling and tumbling. The gold in Desmond’s eyes also dimmed when his knees buckled and he shook his head as if he couldn’t see clearly anymore.

“What’s happening?!” the third man asked, taking a step back. “What magic is this?”

The Order’s Contestant must have thought it was Arlen’s doing. He was looking at Arlen’s wand from under his hood. The three Kunais reappeared in his hands as he kept tracing his steps back. But Arlen had already made a run towards him.

“My head,” Sonia said, struggling to even raise her hands. “My…”

The brilliant gold in Desmond’s eyes became sick-yellow. He had managed to remain standing, but his knees were still shaking as if they were made of paper.

And then terror must have struck Desmond as he snapped his head towards Kai. But Kai wasn’t there anymore. Nor was Simon.

“Power…” Kai hissed, standing behind Desmond, in his shadow. “It had become enough a reason for me to betray.”

A scalding hot air blurred Kai’s figure. His skin had a hot pinkish color, and his eyes were two narrow slits. It had been 10 seconds since he had activated Elementary Snake Instinct.

20 seconds were enough for him to kill a poisoned man twice.

“Some betrayals bring more Power than others,” Kai hissed, a longsword appearing in his hand. “And some Powers are sweeter than others.”

Swish!

Kai hacked the longsword at Desmond’s neck. Blood showered, a deep gash appearing at Desmond’s neck. The power behind the slash wasn’t enough to behead him.

Desmond fell, his hands motionless, and his eyes lost and confused. Kai brought down the longsword again.

[Damage Done: 46 Points]

Blood had covered Kai’s body. The small red dots became a brilliant work of art on his handsome face. A roll of the tongue and Kai tasted it.

Not sweet enough!

The longsword didn’t rest.

Once more.

Finally, the third strike did the deed. Desmond’s head separated from his body, the yellow in his open eyes still disappearing.

[You have killed 1 Chaos’ Contestant]

One last hiss resounded before Kai’s eyes regained their roundness. But Kai must have ignored the stony-gray notification, or was the moonlight playing a trick on him, trying to see more red on his face? Because he didn’t stop.

The fourth strike followed the fifth, then sixth, and on and on it kept going. The squelch of flesh turned to the rattling of bones. But Kai didn’t stop.

It is enough! The sword seemed to cry.

No, it isn’t! The thrill on Kai’s face replied.

It was at this time when you could see what Kai truly was. A beast. A snake, always hiding and shedding its skin at a moment’s notice.

A Demon! All reasons lost beyond humane thinking. All thoughts, pent-up anger, and hidden intentions burst like a furious volcano.

When there was nothing left to hack at, the longsword disappeared. Kai picked up Desmond’s head, or whatever was left of it and threw it at Sonia’s kneeled figure.

“But…” Kai murmured, remembering a spear-wielded black-eyed man. “… Nothing is as sweet as a well-planned revenge.”
