The wind was lonely up there.

It swirled, jumped, and banged against the walls in the cities, but in the skies, it was free. Free to roam as it pleased, free to defy whatever it wanted, and free to bring storms and rain if it so desired.

This freedom brought it power, and with power came loneliness.

The peak of Absolute Power is so pointy that only a toe can be placed there, Kai remembered the words. Only one man can claim it, destined to be lonely for eternity. Until it becomes hard enough for him to stand and he falls, losing his balance. Then another takes his place. A never-ending cycle.

Aim for stability, son, his mother had said. That’s the only way to avoid this cycle.

There is another way, mother, Kai thought.

A sudden gust lifted his cloudy-white hair, making them shine under the unobstructed moonlight.

Break the Peak!

The moon looked like a sad smile from that height, its other half gray and bleak.

Break the Cycle!

The wind had dried the blood’s wetness off him, leaving him covered in its smell.

Kill anyone who dares to come up!

It’s been an hour since their departure.

No one had come for them, not yet. Kai had made Arlen leave behind one broomstick and disfigured bodies to throw the official Wizards and Witches off. But only Kai knew what had kept them from covering the skies like swarms of locusts.

It was the poison he had used on them.

They were already suspecting the missing Boa Constrictor for the state of the dead bodies in the shop. With its poison in the fresh corpses, they would become certain. Thought, Kai hadn’t thought this much ahead when he had used the poison.

It just turned out like that.

I was a butterfly, Kai thought. What does it have to do with me once I have flapped my wings?

It was the wind that had become a storm. And storms could scarcely be controlled.

“What happened there?” A voice asked, bringing Kai’s wandering thoughts to reality. “What happened there? Tell me.”

“IT came for you,” Kai said plainly.

It wasn’t the first time Mr. Beedle had asked this question. Nor was it the first time that Kai had answered him. The wizard trembled. The broomstick trembled with it.

“Damn it! Bloody!” Arlen cursed. “I will kill you if you say that to him again. These are low-quality broomsticks. You think it is easy to keep it airborne with three of us on it?”

It wasn’t. Kai knew it.

They were flying over the lowest layer of clouds. If they had the luxury of finding them on their route. The wind played its own games at that height. Sometimes it came from the right, and it went quiet. Sometimes an upward gust, but most of the time it seemed to come from the front and above.

Pressing them down, backing them up, and slowing them down.

Arlen was a skilled rider, as much as Kai could tell. Simon and Shae, riding just behind their broom, weren’t half as good as Arlen. They were only two, but even then, it had become hard for them to keep up.

Simon again smiled at him when Kai looked behind.

Why does he smile so much? Kai asked himself, rubbing his misty eyes because of the wind. Does he want something? Does he know something?

They had just crossed Peterborough, but it was already becoming a pain for them to go on. Every jerk of the broomstick hit their asses with a muffled thud. They had padded the staff with clothes, but in the long term it was turning out to be completely useless.

Captain doesn’t know cushioning Charm, Shae had told them. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have needed these paddings.

Kai still laughed, remembering Arlen’s face. It must have hurt his pride a lot, Kai thought.

The broomsticks, as old as they looked, were still maintaining a constant speed of 60-70 miles per hour. Arlen slowed down a bit for Simon and Shae to catch up with them. Just enough for them to fly side by side.

“Are you ok?” Arlen shouted, smiling at Shae. His voice broke up before reaching her, though. “Are you? We can take a break if you want.”

No, you won’t, Kai thought. He hasn’t given up on selling vegetables.

“Yes, captain.” Shae smiled back, scooching her head down behind Simon’s back.

“How much longer?” Arlen asked, his eyes squinting against the lancing of wind. “We must be halfway, right?”

Shae didn’t disgrace herself by shouting again. She showed Arlen a finger and then curled it in half.

Around 90 minutes more to York, Kai thought and smiled. But then it came to him. York wasn’t their ultimate destination. My ass will blister before reaching Dufftown.

Suddenly Kai and Shae’s eyes met. She shook and then whispered something in Simon’s ears. The one-eyed man gave Kai a wry smile. “Captain,” Simon shouted. “You go at full speed. I will catch up somehow.”

The corners of Kai’s mouth twitched in return.

It took them over 90 minutes to cross the town of York. It was chilly and painful, but they were thankful that they hadn’t come to face any thunderstorm. In front of them towered high and low hills, undulating like sand mounds of the desert.

Just more colorful.

Kai could feel a hint of Mana around him. Whatever lay ahead was covered for ordinary eyes to see.

“Once we enter,” Arlen said, “there is no turning around.”

He gave Shae a look as if asking the last time. ‘Are you sure?’ Shae gave a powerful nod.

Arlen stirred the broomstick into the unseen Mana layer. The moment they entered, the moonlight seemed to intensify. The hills become mountains, and the lands become valleys. A thick smell of danger challenged Kai’s nostrils.

Arlen must have sensed it too. He brought the broomstick as high as he could go.

“Oh!” Mr. Beedle exclaimed, to their surprise. “Why have you come here?”

Arlen’s face became like an onion suddenly. Even Kai felt there was a hidden meaning in the wizard’s words.

“My Lord,” Arlen said. “Do you know where we are?”

The four Contestants waited with bated breath. The wizard, meanwhile, gave his long beard two powerful strokes.

“Yes, yes.” Mr. Beedle mumbled. “I remember.”

“Where?” The Contestants asked simultaneously.

“The Hidden Moor Hills… The breeding grounds of the Great Redshanks also called the Moors Fury.”
