When Kai’s eyes adjusted, there was a high wall in front of him.

It towered over them, like a beast made of mud and stones, crawling its way out of earth’s womb. Even the Magic’s might paled in front of that feat. This was pure strength, and nothing more.

Power! Kai thought. Myriad forms; one result.

A red hue brightened up everything beyond the wall, and then the wall shook. Boom! A low thump, as if punching into the mud, wasting half the force at the impact. The wall stood tall on its feet. An ancient giant.

The red hue disappeared, leaving behind the heat. It became dark again, but death didn’t loom over them anymore. They could still feel the danger, though, of a different sort. Like the pain of carnal pleasures, welcoming and soothing.

Haha! The laugh echoed again.

“My lord, it’s an honor!” Arlen bowed, followed by Simon. Shae was still out cold, so the man’s eyes fell on Kai. For a moment, a fleeting blink, Kai thought about not bowing at all. Let’s see what would happen? The devil whispered in his mind. The Devil called Pride.

Kai knew better than that. So, he bowed, even lower than Arlen and Simon, his waist bending at a right angle. There was no emotion on his face, no hint of any secrets. At that moment, Kai was a boy, a youth, a newbie; And an unworthy.

Kai could feel the hooded man was still looking at him. But the gaze didn’t last long, just longer than it should have. “My lord, Mr. Beedle,” the hooded man said. “You seem rather shaken. You aren’t injured, are you?”

Fuck! Kai cursed.

They didn’t know what the hooded man would do once getting a negative reply. Even worse was the notion that their entire future depended on the answer of a mad wizard.

It was Arlen’s Luck, whom Kai later thanked, which worked its wonder in that situation.

“No! No!” Mr. Beedle replied, shaking profusely. “You must hurry now. Take me! Take me to Him!”

“At once, my lord!” the hooded man said, putting a hand over Mr. Beedle’s shoulder.

Time seemed to slow down for Kai. Sweat, and an unbearable chill, engulfed his entire body. His throat felt dry, his lips quivered, and the tips of his fingers throbbed.

In fear? Who could say, other than the Demon himself?

You must never reveal your thoughts, son, his mother had told him.

Kai could have taken a deep breath to steady himself, but the hooded man would have sensed it. So he did the next best thing.

He bit his tongue. Blood filled his mouth, a searing pain came rushing along with it. The pain would have made him grimace, but it countered his uneasiness. There was hidden in his heart and mind, a secret, which had been bombarding his inner self to come out.

The pain put a stop to it.

The man gave a last look to Kai before laughing again. “Haha! You guys have done a wonderful job. Mission over.”

The hooded man vanished, proclaiming those words, along with Mr. Beedle. Kai felt as if they had become thin air, melting into the surroundings. But he couldn’t think more about it. The stony-gray notification had returned.

This was the one all of them had been waiting for.

Kai could scarcely control himself from smiling, and he would have if it wasn’t for the stinging pain at the tip of his tongue.

He had become rich. The sudden wealth had made him a rich beggar.

“That’s it?” Kai found himself asking.

“That’s it?!” Arlen fumed. “Wasn’t the last 48 hrs enough for you, Bloody?”

That was not what I meant, Kai thought, but he didn’t correct the captain. Simon let out a low chuckle, his one eye looking knowingly at Kai. Soon, as if following an unspoken command, they flew away from the hell zone named Dufftown.

“What does it mean I can’t get over 20 Attribute Points?” Kai asked.

They had flown to a clearing miles away from Dufftown. Arlen was the first to arrive in the random world. So he would leave first, as Kai had found out. Shae was sitting close to Arlen, and since their landing, Arlen had been whispering something in her ears.

Sometimes Arlen’s words made her frown, and sometimes they puzzled her. But often they forced her to show a resolute expression. Kai’s question broke the tempo of Arlen’s loud whispers.

“Haven’t assigned your Attribute Points to Intelligence yet, Bloody?” Arlen jested. “It means what it says. No matter how many missions you do, you can only get 20 points in total from the first 3 floors.”

Indeed, Kai reflected, his eyes narrowing. The starting Stats affect future growth. Otherwise, it would have just become a pay-to-win game. It all comes down to Abilities, Skills, Items, and Titles. Stats are just criteria. And Glitch

“A word of advice, Bloody,” Arlen said, his tone less mocking than before. “Join an organization after returning to the Primordial Tower. There are many guilds serving the empire. And your loot and materials, use them well. You know what I mean, right?”

Is it his way of saying goodbye? Kai thought. He knew what Arlen meant. Arlen was pointing out the beast’s corpse.

The Captain of Guard stood up, after whispering a few last words in Shae’s ears, making her blush for the first time. He gave a silent nod to Simon and then furrowed his brows at Kai. “Humph!” Arlen snorted, a blue light shimmering around him. “You are OK, I guess. Come to the Thunder Faction if you need any help.”

The blue light became a thundering flash. When Kai could see again, Arlen Willey had already disappeared.
