The white cloak fluttered high under the moonlit night.
This cloak, though, didn’t belong to Ser Morgan Tussy. Kai’s eyes were looking at another knight mounting a stallion standing atop a low hill. The knight’s silhouette was a blur, and even in the dim night, its golden armor shimmered like a sleeping sun.
But these weren’t the things Kai had noticed first. It was the banner in the knight’s hand. Its staff towered towards the sky, the long banner rippling smoothly. All cloaks paled compared to it, especially when Ser Morgan had no such thing in his hands.
The banner also had a sigil. A long golden spear impaling a red-black heart from side to side upon a pale blue background; the colors of cloudless skies. Every inch of this banner stood against the disgusting Yin-Yang sigil on Ser Morgan’s cloak.
Both knights stared at each other. One looked up, and the other down. One looked battered, and the other a hero of ancient tales.
You all will battle against the likes of you, the silver-armored captain had told Kai and others. Order’s newbies, having a specialty in close combat, like you. They will be tired, like you. They will be almost dying, like you. And they will want to live too, like you. Kill or get killed. As the Systems like to say, the choice is yours.
Kai had got to know the reason for this painful night then. The reason for Shae’s absence. Even before coming to the Primordial Tower, the Systems had grouped them according to their potential. Those hundred and thirty-three who had come out of the deep wombs of earth were all fighters. All with low Intelligence, Kai had mocked himself and others then.
The Chaos’ knight had said nothing to them since, and with the coming of this golden knight, even his occasional chuckles had died out. Kai could feel it. The tension! The murderous intentions! And the bloodthirst!
The steel screeched against leather as Ser Tussy unsheathed his two-handed greatsword. The sword played with moonlight before Morgan pointed it at the Order’s golden knight. Up, on the hill, the banner’s staff turned out to be a spear when the knight pointed it at Kai’s group.
Charge!
Charge!!
Both knights commanded, louder than the other. Kai, and some forty more with him, charged up the hill. ‘Charge’ was an oiled word in their case. More suitable would have been to say they crawled. But this was a battle, and battles needed to be sung, not told.
So a song it was, and the soldiers charge in songs, not crawl.
The Order’s newbies flew down from the hill, like tiny black birds, appearing one after the other.
There were no shouts, no battle cry. Their battle drums were the flutters of cloaks. Their motive? To live!
For a fleeting moment, Kai had thought about attacking Ser Morgan Tussy. He wasn’t the knight’s match, Kai knew, but a few drops of Light Neurotoxin could have done the trick. Then what? Kai had thought, thinking of the future. He didn’t know which way to go, and he didn’t know if there was a way at all.
Kai felt helpless, not having control of his fate. This helplessness brought annoyance, which brought anger. Anger became Heat! This heat exploded in his chest when Kai saw a newbie charging at him, barehanded, weaponless. Kai’s eyes turned reptilian, his pale, tired body became red. His figure rippled under the scalding hot steam coming out of him, like the wind-battered banner.

The Blue-tailed Boa Constrictor appeared on his right arm, along with the longsword. Kai slithered uphill. The silver arc reappeared, and Kai’s kick followed, landing at the gash left behind by his slash. His Glitch was already like an Ability, not a Skill, and the night made it impossible for anyone to notice its true nature.

One more kick separated the dangling head.
Screams woke up the small hill when the two groups of newbies butted themselves against each other. But it was the dying who did all the screaming. The living had no such strength to even attempt it.
The reality of getting no loot fumed Kai even more. And then he found a living ghost dashing at him. Sunken eyes, disheveled hair, and bare breasts. She was a raindrop falling on him. She had come for an easy kill but met her doom. Kai had already hidden the longsword in his Inventory. When he took it out, the steel butchered her, almost parting her in two from her waist.

Only blood rained down, washing Kai’s head, dying his white hair in muddy gray and red.
More! I want more, Kai hissed, cutting her in two with one more strike.
Rip all your pants in half, Ser Morgan had instructed them. I don’t want you fools to cut each other’s throats there.
On his right, Kai saw two full-pants pressing a half-pant. Kai’s figure seemed to melt among the confusion as he pounced at them. A thud resounded in the three Contestants’ ears, and when they looked down, they saw something had appeared in the small space surrounded by their legs.
How?! They must have thought before Kai twisted his waist and jumped. His eyes had become round again, but the Ability had done its job. The longsword flashed, carving out a silvery arc.
Tink!
It was the only sound echoing in Kai’s mind as he saw two throats opening up, like a bloody, clownish smile.

A frown appeared on his face, and his lips quivered in anger and loss. The longsword had broken in two. I doubt it would behead someone anymore, Kai thought, crushing the two fallen Contestants’ throats.

Kai didn’t mourn for it. It was a weapon, and it had served its purpose. But Kai wasn’t done with it. Even the dead have their uses, Kai told himself, looking at the broken steel. You must do your duty one last time.
“Only once more,” Kai snarled, a low growl coming out of his throat.
Once more! The bloody, broken steel screamed in agreement.
When Kai looked up, the hill was in repose. The screamers were long dead, and the rest were just slapping each other. But one more kill he needed, so one more would scream.
Step by step, Kai walked towards the nearest full-pant, who was wrestling with a half-pant woman, feeling her breasts, biting her ears.
Step!
The woman had covered him in nail marks, but she was dying.
Step!!
Kai towered over them, his shadow darkening their sight.
“ENOUGH!” A womanly, but powerful shout came from up the hill. “Fall back!”
“Fall back!” Ser Morgan Tussy commanded his soldiers in return.
Kai lifted his broken sword, his back facing the golden knight. “Humph!” the knight snorted, and in the next moment, she disappeared. She appeared over Kai, her long spear charging at Kai’s back.
Ser Tussy met her mid air. The greatsword hugged the spear, and both Morgan and the golden knight got thrown away with a loud bang. When they landed on the ground, a head was rolling down, sending the hill to sleep with one last lullaby.
The longsword gave out a last cry, the steel breaking down into tiny chunks of silver stardust.
