It wasn’t until the morning of the 3rd day did Kai come out of his room.

He seemed like a chicken, who had no flesh but only feathers. All his HP, MP, and SP were full, but he seemed lethargic. A husk! He had been a dangerous Contestant before, but now, he was like a dying snake. Ready to kill at a moment’s notice!

Gods have mercy on the unfortunate soul who will cross this man’s path first, the guild’s members must have thought.

That unfortunate soul turned out to be Roland, but nothing as absurd happened as the crowd had been hoping for. Kai let him in the room and shut the door.

“How much did they cost?” Kai asked, taking a seat.

“What happened to you?” Roland asked back but got no answer. “200 Mission Credits for each saber and another 300 for the armor.”

1100 Mission Credits, Kai reflected. I would have never gotten those many, at least not that easily.

After a long talk with Jack, Kai had made the armorer forge four sabers using the magical creature’s bill. Jack had been adamant about making a spear. It is a steel-type creature, Jack had told him. And look at its bill. Look at it! It’s made to be forged into a spear.

But Kai had been having none of it. Better many low-grade weapons he could use than a high-grade weapon he couldn’t, Kai had thought. All his Elementary Abilities had gone under a Proficiency rise, but his Twin-Saber Style was still at the same level. Kai knew without the sabers in his hands, this Ability won’t budge at all.

There was one more reason for choosing the saber over the spear. Not that obvious, though. Kai hated spears. He hated the looks of them, their sight, and their shape. All made him remember a person Kai had rather killed a hundred times more.

Then there was the armor. Crush the leftover bill, and mix them with the powdered bones, Kai had told Jack. Line the leather made of the beast’s hide internally with the mixture, and waste nothing, I am telling you.

“You seemed rather familiar with forging armors,” Roland commented, passing the sabers wrapped under a black cloth. “Were you an armorer too in your previous life?”

Kai shook his head, his hand sliding in the cloth, and the sabers disappeared in his Inventory. He would check them out later. Kai was indeed familiar with forging weapons, or it was better to say, he was familiar with how to use Beasts’ parts to make weapons. And why wouldn’t he, when his father was the world’s leading scientist in the Beast Armament Research Department?

That’s how we met each other, his mother had told him once. Your father was the master of the Beasts’ external attributes, and I was master of the Beasts’ internal ones.

Kai also remembered how he had replied to his mother. Why “was” mother? You still are the master, you know. Master of everything! His mother had laughed then. So childish he was, and so innocent. A chuckle escaped Kai, remembering those times.

“What’s so funny?” Roland almost snapped.

“Nothing,” Kai replied, brushing off the tension. “Hand over the armor.”

Roland took a brown leather vest out of his Inventory and threw it towards Kai. Oh! It’s that good?! Kai thought, noticing the reluctant expression on Roland’s face.

The Stats spoke for themselves.

+7 Defense? This?! Kai’s eyes became wide seeing the value. It was like wearing his own skin over himself. Kai immediately wore it over his shirt. It was plain brown from outside, only showing blurry white protrusions where the lining had been carried out over chest and back.

Wonderful! Now I can resume my fighting style, Kai thought, flexing his arms. The armor brought down his Agility by 1 point, but he won’t be traveling on foot any longer.

“Why only 66%?” Kai asked. “I thought it would be 100%. Certainly, the materials were fresh.”

“No, it’s not that.” Roland had almost left the room but turned back hearing Kai’s query. “Materials matter, but it is an innate flaw of Contestants who are also armorers. If you want an Item beyond 80%, you can only get one in the Random Worlds, or have it made by the armorers within the random worlds.”

“How much would that cost me?” Kai passively asked and got a snort in reply.

“Humph! Get ready, we are leaving in an hour.”

Kai saw his face in the mirror, hanging on the opposite wall. There was a smile on his face, so evil that even he did not know when it had crept up. His hand swept the empty air, a glass vial appearing in his hand, and from the markings over it, one could tell there were around 7 ml of substance within it.

“My precious!” Kai muttered, activating the Skill once again.

Kai wasn’t a skilled rider, but the stallion was trained masterfully.

Kai pressed his knee against the beast’s belly, gave a slight tuck to the reins, and it understood his commands. Roland was in lead, followed by his right-hand man, while Kai was in the middle of the team which comprised 4 men and 3 women.

They weren’t the only ones, though. Bands of Contestants were marching out of the Barren Gate to a land that wasn’t barren anymore, and even before going out, they could see greenery from the opening in the gate. Distant cries of birds were sipping in the city, giving all the Contestants a cheery and expectant expression.

One more battle, Kai thought, then who knows when I will return to the Primordial Tower? I certainly won’t be returning to this place. That much I know.

But the Attribute, which shouldn’t have mattered outside the Random Worlds, was bent on working against him.

“YOU!” A shout came from Kai’s left. Kai remembered him from the time before they had entered the city. “In the name of R’lyeh Empire, I, Head Guardsman Stuart Gunther, confiscate you into the Barren Gate 3rd Unit.”

Luck was indeed a fickle thing.
