The name suited him.
Kai had found it lucky, for all it was worth. It was easy to kill when people already feared him without seeing his appearance.
Clueless minds, greedy hearts, Kai thought with gritted teeth, a sudden surge of hate welling up in him. A tussle of parchments arrested his attention. Once more, the quill lifted, but not the parchment, and it wrote out all the details Kai had already seen before in the White Room. The Mission, its summary, objective, time limit, and difficulty all were written with a deft unseen hand neatly on that parchment.
The moment quill finished its task, it fell lifeless away from the parchments. The force that had given it life was gone without even a sigh. Kai felt the slightest disturbance, a distant murmur, and the feeling of a sweat-drop tracing the skin over his spine. This was the first for him, but Kai could have sworn it wasn’t the first after his appearance in the room.
Mana… Kai could tell, like the instinct of a newborn running for the teats. After accessing his stats, a brand new door has opened for him. I should have read those books, Kai ruefully told himself.
Then his eyes flickered. The stony-gray notification had returned.

Do I have any other choice? Kai asked himself, noticing that some side-missions will be like the one he was seeing. Compulsory, without which he wouldn’t be able to proceed with the Main Mission. He also noted the use of ‘him’ for the Captain of Guard.
“Yes.”

So it’s done, Kai thought. The room had gone silent, and if there was once magic here, it was gone too. Kai knew if he were to walk out of the room, the Mission timer would start, but he decided against it.

Kai had been noticing the strangeness of this little room he was in, or it was more apt to say he was made to notice it. There wasn’t any sound coming in, even though Kai could see the drizzle outside the window. It’s like time had stopped within this room, Kai guessed. Only that made sense to him. Otherwise, he found it troubling thinking of what would happen if he were to never go out of this room.
A person will go mad! Better death than this confinement, Kai observed. But he didn’t move towards the door. There was a stool in one corner, one of its three wooden legs was almost broken. But the height was just enough for Kai to find it to his taste. He placed it in the middle of the room and sat on it as if he had all the time in the world.
In a sense, he did have all the time in the world.
Kai didn’t have the best of patience, but cunning deeds needed thinking, and thinking needed time. He had to compromise and find a middle ground somewhere.
Kai’s mind darted around the room, remembering every little detail he had seen by now. A habit he had learned from his two years of slaughter. His eyes, though, never left the letter placed on the table, waiting for him to pick it up. There was something about it, a detail, a loophole, which Kai struggled to find.
And then it struck him, like a bolt of lightning.
It was there all this while! Why couldn’t I see it before? Kai jumped towards the table and towered over the letter. The corners of his mouth turned up and came down, trying too hard to hide that grin, like always. He held the letter, felt the settled ink on the parchment, and then he looked at the quill, and the barely used ink in the ink-bottle. The mass of liquid blackness was still there, calling Kai to itself, asking him to drown himself in it.
Kai dragged the stool towards the table and settled down. It would need time, he knew it. No rush.
There were still three more parchments on the table. Kai thanked the maker of the world for that. Placing a blank parchment in front of him, Kai held the quill, feeling its distinct shape. I will have to get used to it, Kai told himself. He dipped the nib in the ink-bottle, a slight shake, and brought it over the parchment.
A glance at the letter, those words, their shape, and Kai began his scheme.
1 hour…
2 hours…
And hours after hours, Kai kept practicing, trying to imitate the writing style. He was no fool. Kai would make no drastic change, just enough for him to give a chance. A chance to manipulate, a chance to not be manipulated.
After 5 hours, Kai put down the quill, the ink-bottle half emptied, and two of three yellow parchments all but gone and blackened. This would be enough, Kai thought. There was the slightest hint of different writing, but it was deviously hidden.
“I won’t be that unlucky for it to get noticed, right?”
2, the number answered his question, the value of his Luck Attribute. Kai’s face twisted in an ugly expression. Damn it! Kai cursed and held the quill again. Another hour, and now his eyes were bloodshot. Even he found it difficult to tell which was the original writing.
Kai placed the last blank parchment, knowing he had only one chance. He copied the entire contents of the Proof Letter, skillfully, bringing forth all the patience he could muster. And no, he altered nothing, neither did he omit any word. His prey was the Mission Objective.
“You will be a guard in the unit, where the Captain of the Guard will give you certain tasks which may be counted as part of this mission,” to which he added, “for both of you.”
