All traces of the fire had died when Kai heard the gas hissing out of the pokemon.

The bare minimum he could see before got covered in the blurry gaseous film. It was coming to him. The Poison! Kai could feel it even though he was half-buried in the filth of the sewer. And as much as he liked to run and face the enemy on his terms, he couldn’t.

Just meters behind him was Jon Arryn. Even if he would survive the gaseous substance, Kai knew the old man wouldn't. Something must be done. And he needed to do it fast. Kai left the protection of sticky liquid around him and stood up. An unseen cloud seemed to come for him, darkening even the darkness itself.

I can’t see anything, Kai told himself, dashing towards the enemy. But they can’t either.

“Did you get the notification?” Grim asked, his voice echoing off the tunnels, untethered by the poisonous gas.

“Nah!” Sai replied. “The bastard isn’t dead yet. I will blast the entire tunnel to smithereens this time.”

“No!” Grim shouted. “The gas is inflammable, fool. You will kill us both. Let him come. Let him drown himself in the poison. He can’t find us, anyway.”

They are right, Kai thought. I can’t find them by just following their voices. But I know what can.

“Come forth!” Kai called, before entering the poison cloud. “Blue-tailed Boa Constrictor.”

Kai took a deep breath as he plunged himself into the smoke. He could still feel the cruel burning sensation on his skin, and now the heat took him from inside. His burned skin bristled as his body became red and gave out puffs of steam. Kai’s eyes became reptilian slits, and he felt the tattoo of the Boa on his right arm slithering in pleasure.

At other times, these changes would have stopped here. But something more was happening to Kai. A change! A new but familiar change.

First Kai’s nose squinted, turning into the shape of a serpent’s nose. Then his tongue twisted in his mouth. He could feel it. Painful? No. Only immense pleasure, as if he was born to go through these changes. The tongue broke apart into two long tendrils, and it slithered out of his mouth.

Hiss!

The forked tongue hissed as Kai tasted the chemicals in his surroundings. The Poison had a bitter taste. Then his serpent nostrils flared. Even the darkness couldn’t prevent Kai from sensing the heat.

Everything seemed to have come alive to Kai. He knew the poison had entered him by then but it didn’t stop him from slithering. He could see them now. Three distinct figures, radiating yellow-red-blue heat. Two were standing over three arms apart and were still distancing themselves from each other. The third hovered above them; an enormous ball of swirling gas.

Kai could taste the pokemon at the tip of his tongue. Nasty! And, yes. Powerful!

The poison melted into him, turning his veins blue-purple. Kai could feel strength abandoning him. Each second he spent within the poison was quickening his death. It was now or never.

“Is he dead?” the walls echoed Sai’s voice.

“Soon…”

“Koffing!”

A momentary silence!

And when this silence became heavier than the darkness, Kai slithered out of the cloud. Both his sabers were outstretched to his left as he descended on Sai.

“How…” It was the only words Sai could say before Kai’s voice flooded him.

“Twin-Saber Style,” Kai hissed, his body whirling like a tornado. “Kiss of the Giant Serpent!”

There was such strength behind the two slashes that the sabers broke the bones before they could even enter the flesh. Two screeching noises drowned Sai’s scream, and the serpent’s kiss cut his entire body into three parts.

Kai melted back into the cloud, leaving the corpse’s pieces for the filth.

“Sai!” Grim shouted at nothing; at no one. “Sai, what happened? Koffing, did you see something? Can you find Sai?”

“Koffing…”

There was a fear in the beast’s voice too. Kai put the sabers back into the Inventory and slithered behind Grim.

“Who’s there?” the man barked, his Perception roaring, feeling the danger. “Koffing… Use Tackle!”

Kai saw the enormous ball of gas charging aimlessly into the tunnel, hitting nothing but the slimy walls. He made a fist and planted it into Grim’s ribs.

Crunch!

“Ahhhhhhh!” the man howled. “Koffing! He’s here. Tackle here.”

When the pokemon came charging, Kai had already melted away. The beast, as blind as its master, smashed itself into Grim. “Cough!” Kai heard him coughing, and his forked tongue tasted blood at its tip.

“It’s me!” Grim roared, his breath breaking under the mask. “Koffing, it’s me. Go away.”

The pokemon retreated, but Kai returned. Punches, kicks, and then more punches followed by screams after screams. Kai’s eyes became round, but the pokemon never returned. He reached for the Grim’s throat and lifted him. When Kai brought the masked man near his face, Grim let out another whimpering shriek.

Kai’s face was covered in blue veins. Even the white of his eyes had become dense purple. Blood was seeping out from the corner of his eyes. But that wasn’t the reason for the shriek. It was Kai! It was Danger itself! Kai’s face was expressionless, his eyes dead, and his lips shut in a thin line. Make a move, Kai’s face seemed to say. And Die!

“Koffinggg!” the beast roared, sensing the peril of its master, and came charging at Kai.

“Call it back,” Kai finally said, tightening his fingers around Grim’s throat. “Now.”

Grim was choking under Kai’s grip, but somehow he took the Pokeball out of his Inventory. A blue ray hit the crazed beast and both the pokemon and Pokeball vanished.

Only then did Kai let out a grin. “Well, well, my friend!” he hissed, taking off Grim’s mask. “How about a friendly chat, huh?”
