Kai stepped toward her.

His knees buckled, and he came down, coughing globules of thick blood. He was bleeding internally, and his muscles were like shredded meat, making him wince with every movement. The saber in his right hand vanished into specks of sparkly dust.

Fuck! Kai cursed, trying to not lose himself in the darkness. If I hadn’t lost the use of my left shoulder, I could have cut her in half. Tch!

Serpent’s God Wrath was the most potent technique in Kai’s arsenal. As usual, he was supposed to perform it with two sabers. But he couldn’t because of the wounded shoulder. The cost? His left hand. All the built-up strength which he should have channeled into the saber found no outlet source. That strength rebounded, crushing his bone from within.

Kai looked at the blackened left hand as if it had been mortified ages ago. The only thing that was keeping him sane was the Titan’s buff, Kai knew. But not for long, he reminded himself. I must get up. I must finish the job.

Losing sensation in his left hand pained Kai, but not as much as thinking of letting go of the loot from a 4th-floor Contestant. Kai stood up, pushing the ground. Another step and the masked woman would be within his reach.

The notification came suddenly. So did the glow in the corner of his eyes.

[

WARNING: Contestant’s HP is below 10% of its max value.

HP regeneration rate is reduced by half

Through the notification, Kai saw another golden ring. The scene on the other side this time was of a lavish room. Kai’s heart thumped.

Forget it. Forget her. And forget everything! Kai’s conscience screamed the warning. Whoever was coming out was stronger than Sparrow. Kai’s legs shook as he thrust himself towards his sabers, which he had thrown before. There was no time to waste. Damn it! My Pokeballs, Kai suddenly remembered. One of the Pokeball, which had struck the golden disc, was near him. Kai picked it up and sent one of the sabers and the Pokeball to his Inventory.

With one saber in his working hand, Kai searched for the second Pokeball. There it is!  Kai’s eyes found it. And along with the Pokeball, they found the guns’ barrels aimed at him. Cuckoo fired. But the aim wasn’t right. Kai struggled to not fall and decided to leave the Pokeball, though reluctantly. As he passed by the masked woman, he saw her looking at him.

Sparrow grumbled. With his ear numb as if he was underwater, he couldn’t hear clearly what she said. Still, he could make out two words in that sentence. Deceit. Abomination.

Kai paused.

Bitch! Kai angrily thought, lifting his poison smeared saber. This will teach you to shut up.

He thrust the saber point into her wound, and he would have gone deeper, but his slight pause was enough to delay Kai. Two enormous round golden discs came flying at him, hitting squarely on his chest.

Boom!

[Damage Taken: 50 points]

Kai felt as if a motor vehicle had hit him. His entire body got thrown out, dragging, rolling over the floor like a pebble. From afar, thunderous shouts of guards and hooves trampling the ground reached them. Kai didn’t know if he was alive or dead. His body just lifted itself, and he dashed towards the Tower of Hand without looking back. Any moment now, the Titan’s buff could wear off, he knew. And Kai would rather be in the sewers when that happens.

“Here!” a guard screamed in front of Kai. “He’s here…”

Kai hacked. The guard hid behind the shield. A hiss resounded as Kai slithered around him, letting the saber nick at the back of his neck. The black saber tasted a few drops of blood before Kai stored it in the Inventory.

Behind Kai, the guard followed for a few seconds with a confused expression on his face. How did he pass by me? He must have thought.

Then he died.

Past midnight, in the sewers

Like a vermin, Kai’s mouth was opened wide as the filth trickled down out of it. His body was motionless as if it was him who had been poisoned with the Light Neurotoxin. Only the pulsing protrusions on his face, giving out foul smoke, told that he was alive. Yes. That and the shine of a bronze helmet which kept appearing on his head after every half hour.

I am alive, Kai told himself. I have survived. Haha! My Pokeball

The existence of thoughts was enough to make him sure he wasn’t dead. On one hand, Kai was excited that he had bested a death prophecy. On the other hand, Kai’s heart pained, thinking of the lost Pokeball.

And his entire body shivered when Kai remembered what he had gained out of this brief adventure.

Nothing.

After coming down into the sewers, the only thing Kai had done like a machine was to repeat the process of Filth Manipulation and use Titan’s buff to speed up his HP regeneration. Being well out of Death’s reach, he finally got some time to look at the Notifications he had yet to read.

[Elementary Snake Instinct: Proficiency 25% (+4%)]

[Elementary Slither Footsteps: Proficiency 60% (+9%)]

[Elementary Twin-Saber Style: Proficiency 65% (+15%)]

One use, Kai thought, looking at the enormous increment in these three Abilities. Just one.

Even if Kai knew the obvious effect, he wouldn’t dare to use the Forbidden Technique again. There was a reason this technique was forbidden. Kai looked at his left hand, which now looked gray like ash. It was healing, but any other wound would have healed a hundred times by now.

Sigh! Kai let out a scant breath, taking his mind off it. Then he looked at another notification.

[WARNING: Black-Steel Saber - Quality: 0%]

In one slash, Kai had lost his brand new saber. Anger welled up within him, thinking of his Item. And it erupted when he thought about how he had even failed to cut her in half. He also didn’t know if that poisonous nick would be enough to kill the masked woman.

Kai almost shook his head, but his muscles refused the command.

There was only one thing he took solace in.

The Hidden Mission. And its potential reward.
