Just slightly under two hours due to Sam’s expert driving, they finally arrived in the next town.
Zary had known of and been in this town before because this was her previous assistant, Ashley’s, home address. One time, she had spent the night in Ashley’s house years ago and she instantly loved the entire Drummond family. Mrs. Drummond, Ashley’s mother, was such an engaging woman and Zary had enjoyed talking to her as if she had known her for a long time already. The woman just had a way with carrying herself that made others warm up to her automatically – and Zary was not exempted from it.
They parted ways too soon though, because Miss Drummond got married and had to step down from her job when she got pregnant.
Zary travels a lot, was busy as a bee almost 24/7 and she needed her personal assistant and secretary being stuck with her all of the time because of her phobia in being close to men. Given that majority of the business associates and clients she dealt with were men, she always wanted someone who single as her assistant. Once her assistants get married and have children, she will have to replace them – more for their sakes than hers. That was her protocol whenever she hires her secretaries and assistants.
However, Miss Drummond had been her very first assistant and she was the one who had been with during her hardest days. So she had offered her a work from home job for a year before assigning her for another more suitable position in her company later on.
As soon as she saw that familiar family house approaching in the distance, Zary asked Sam to stop. She was thankful that Ashley did not change her home address and what was better was that her house was just next to her parent’s.
Ashley was already standing beside a car that was parked in front of the house, waving enthusiastically at her with a big smile plastered over her face.
“Ma’am Zary! I hope everything is alright…” she trailed off looking at the tall and handsome man that was with her. Her eyes were wide with shock before she managed to whisper at Zary. “Your phobia is already cured, ma’am?”
“Err… yep.” Zary answered simply, not wanting to get into too many details as they will not have much time to discuss. Moreover, she did not want to disclose too much information to Ashley in case it might get her into trouble with those guys who were chasing them.
“Wow! Congratulations! That’s amazing!” Ashley’s bright smile showed that she was truly happy for her boss’ improvement.
“T-thank you. Is this the car?”
“Ah, yes. I hope everything’s alright.” Ashley kept glancing over at Sam and there was an obvious worry on her face.
“Don’t worry, I’m good. I’m just… well, trying to chill a bit. But I overestimated myself. I don’t think I could last any longer if we continued travelling on a bike. My poor legs and hips are about to turn into mush straddling the bike for long hours.” Zary laughed as she threw out the excuse she had prepared. “As what I’ve messaged you, I’ll leave our bike here then. I’ll call you soon.”
“Won’t you at least come in and say hi for a bit? Mom would certainly be ecstatic to see you again.”
Zary shook her head. “I’d love to, Ashley… but we’re really in hurry. I’ll see if we can drop by on our way back.” She told her. Then within the next few minutes after exchanging goodbyes and thanks, Sam and Zary were again on the road.
“You should try and sleep now, Zary.” Sam said as she yawned behind her hand.
“I wanted to ask you something first...” another yawn punctuated her sentence.
“You can ask me later. Take a nap now. The question can wait. I’m not running away from you.” He insisted then he turned the radio on. A calming song rang filled the car and it did not take long Zary’s already heavy lids gave up the fight to sleep and she dozed off. Normally, she could easily pull an all-nighter and work until the sun rises. However, this time, it seems as though she could not anymore. She could not fight the dizziness even though it was only three in the morning.
The next time she opened her eyes, what welcomed her was a beautiful sunrise.
The car was no longer moving, and she could see the sea. What? They are at a beach!
She started and looked at her side. Panic quickly rose within her heart when she saw that the driver’s seat was empty. “Sam?”
Abruptly, Zary scrambled to take off her seatbelt when the car’s door on her side opened.
Whipping her head up, she stilled at the sight of him, smiling at her. “Good morning, sweetheart.” His pleasant morning voice tingled her ears. “I went to buy you some food. I’m guessing you might be getting hungry soon. And it looks that I’m right.” He lifted a bag of take-out food and grinned at her.
The wafting scent of something fried made her salivate. Maybe because she was hella hungry right now.
“I saw a nice spot for us to sit while you eat your breakfast. Come.” He offered her his hand.
Zary eagerly accepted it, but she halted after taking a few steps. “But is this okay, Sam? What if they catch up to us?” she asked, finally remembering their predicament. The whole reason why they were here in the first place.
He looked over his shoulder and flashed a slight but reassuring smile. “Don’t worry. They’re not going to catch up on us any time soon. Trust me.”
They sat at an empty bench by the roadside, facing the scenic view of the beach. He opened the boxes and handed one to her.
Zary was feeling so starved that she immediately dug into it. The fast food was nothing special. But it tasted so incredibly good. She did not know if it was because she was hungry, or because of this scenic view of the sunrise before her, or because of this handsome robot next to her. Maybe it was just all of it.
“This is the first time I am eating a breakfast along the roadside and watching the sunrise.” She uttered, watching the sunrise at the horizon. “It’s incredibly beautiful. I don’t know why I only seem to appreciate such a beauty now.” Her voice had a mix of happiness and sadness in it.
He did not speak but when she glanced up at him, he was watching her as if she was the beautiful sunrise to him. She could not help but blush. But then she knew that this man was created to like only her because she was his master.
“Sam? I want to ask you something,” she started.
“Yes?”
“Is there a secret about you that I don’t know? I mean… why is the company tracking you down? I don’t believe it is as simple as you being a factory defect.. I think they want something from you. Do you know what it is?”
