Chapter 119: This is awkward

Mckenna stared at Naya in both astonishment and a renewed sense of wonder.

She had never met someone like her before. Someone who sees everything in black and white and grey all at the same time.

Naya slowly chewed on her salad and waited for Jason's wife to say something or at least do more than gawk at her.

"I don't understand. Are you sure?" Mckenna asked her and placed a piece of fries in her mouth.

"Of course not but when you love someone, feelings that aren't theirs becomes irrelevant. I learnt it the hard way with Jason and I learnt my lesson. Kara is what's important to me and I want her to be happy and have everything. And being a part of your family is what's important to her and I have to live with that"

Mckenna relaxed into her seat and she kept eating her fries.

"I just want you to know that I love Kara. Most days, I don't even remember she is not mine but Naya, I won't even think of replacing you…ever. You are her mother, plain and simple"

"Maybe you should…" Naya murmured.

"What?" Mckenna was confused.

"I said maybe you should be Kara's mom. So far, I am not doing a good job…I am more of a body guard and shield to her than a mother. And frankly, I don't have the strength to worry about the mundane stuff, McKenna. I am ashamed of admitting that but it's true. I am screwed up, Kane made sure of that. I don't know how to be a normal mother, just her protector…"

"Naya, part of being her mother is being her protector!" Mckenna quickly chipped in.

"But I can't worry about normal stuff, I can't worry about if she likes a boy at school or if she is getting good grades. Or when her tummy aches, what to tell her to make her feel better is alien to me. I was more worried about the security cameras at home and whether Kane will come after me and her because I am in Nigeria more than I was worried about her surgery. Do you even know the first thing I did when I entered her hospital room?" Naya asked her.

"Whatever you did, I am sure it was warranted?" Mckenna told her.

"The first thing I did was check the windows and close the curtains. What kind of a mother does that?" Naya dropped the spoon she was holding.

"A caring one….a scared mother who intentionally placed herself in-between a psychopath and the child she loves with all her heart. You are a superhero, Naya and a damn good one. Don't you ever forget that!" Mckenna placed her hand on Naya's and gave her a gentle squeeze.

"Yeah and I am not regretting it. I am just saying there is nothing wrong in admitting my inadequacy and you, dear McKenna, are stepping up for me. You be mommy to her and I will be Mama and protector. Together, we are almost the perfect mother. Okay?" Naya looked at her.

"Okay….okay, Naya" McKenna nodded.

"How about we report to each other about our Jobs? I tell you about normal stuff I do with Kara and you tell me the badass stuff you do to protect her" McKenna said and stretched out her hand for a shake.

"Do we have a deal?"

Naya nodded and shook her hand.

"I will start. Last week, I broke into Kane's house and left him a message. I placed a dead disgusting rat on his plate and served it. Now, he thinks that one of the drug dealers he worked undercover to catch is out to get him…that should keep him busy for a while" Naya told her with a smirk.

At first she only played the game with Kane to keep him away from Kara but along the way, maybe she started enjoying it. She started enjoying seeing the psychopath who made her life a living hell in pain.

Who would blame her? Knowing that she can hurt him as much as he can hurt her was all the validation she needed to stand up to him.

But Naya knew there was a little line she couldn't cross, a line that was getting blurrier everyday.

Most days, she sits in her apartment and fantasizes about different ways to kill Kane. And every way involved time and excruciating pain on Kane's side.

She even thought of kidnapping him like he kidnapped her daughter and the man she sees as family. She would tie him up in the basement and slowly place his feet in a boiling pot of oil. Naya imagined having a front roll seat to Kane's slow sizzling like he was chicken.

But on her worst days, she would take a video of Kara, when she was two and still went by the name - Nolani and she would tell herself that she couldn't do something like that to her perfect little girl. She couldn't be a murderer too.

"Mckenna, I want to say thank you. There are only a handful of women out there who are willing to do what you are doing. Girl, our Jason is lucky to have you" Naya said and raised a glass to McKenna like she was giving a toast.

Mckenna cleared her throat when she spotted Tamara walk inside the cafeteria without EJ.

"Well, our Jason kind of pulled another one on me. Turns out Tamara Jones had his child" McKenna told her in a low voice.

Naya's eyes widened.

"Jason found Tamara! And she has a child?" Naya's voice was loud and filled with the shock she was feeling.

"Hush Naya! She just walked inside the cafeteria. She is the lady wearing the doctor's scrub" McKenna pointed to Tamara with her chin.

"Most people here are wearing scrubs!" Naya lowered both her head and her voice.

"Well, not all of them look like they are a supermodel doing an ad for the hospital. She is standing close to bread rolls and she fucking kissed my husband…yeah, she kissed our Jason!"

"Well, I would kiss Jason too if I didn't have an overly sense of morality and plus I actually like you Mckenna…"

Mckenna grabbed her hand "Who's side are you on, Whitmore?"

"Of course, I am on your side. She is the devil…" Naya said.

"...a very gorgeous devil that wants my husband and she has a secret weapon, a bubbly actually lovable daughter named after my husband and his mother, Elixir Jason"

"She is gorgeous alright but she is no Mckenna. I for one knows that Jason has eyes for you, Mckenna. He was a mess when he broke up with you. I mean imagine someone as hot as your husband staying celibate for two years because he couldn't bear to touch another woman that wasn't you. I know this because we lived in this same house for two years raising our daughter!"

"You think so? Oh crap…Tamara is walking towards us….what should I do?" Mckenna asked her as she adjusted her hair.

"Hey, McKenna"

Mckenna relaxed into her chair.

"Tamara…hey. I didn't know you were still in the hospital" McKenna answered.

"I have to watch how Kara is doing for a while before heading home. The surgery was seamless and successful. The pain should go away soon" Tamara explained.

She was carrying a plate of food too.

"Tamara, this is Naya…she is Kara's mother and Naya, meet Tamara Jones"

Tamara smiled at both women, she looked fairly confused.

"Sorry, I thought you were Kara's mother, McKenna" Tamara asked.

"I am…"

"She is…"

Both Mckenna and Naya answered simultaneously.

"I see…"

Mckenna can see the confusion in Tamara's eyes.

"Naya gave birth to Kara and I am raising her. She is Mama and I am mommy. Or do you think I should love Kara less because I didn't give birth to her?" Mckenna asked. She was ready for a verbal fight.

"Of course not, I think it's amazing. Naya, it's nice to meet you"

Naya smiled like she was saying it wasn't.

"Tamara, do you want to sit with us?" Naya asked her.

Mckenna gave her a look. What the hell was she doing? But then she remembered that Naya loved keeping her enemies closer and she was in her corner, and it made her relax.

"Yeah, sure. Thank you" Tammy said and sat down.

"You know we baby mamas have to stick together, right?" Naya said it in a voice that made it sound like an insult.

"I am not just a baby mama. Jason and I…" Tamara started to say but Mckenna interrupted her.

"Had sex? Yeah, he did the same with Naya too. My husband slept with a lot of women before he met me"

"No. I was going to say that Jason and I are best friends" Tamara was suddenly feeling nervous.

For a while, the trio ate in silence.

Jason and Chike walked into the cafeteria to get food. Chike was talking about football when he sighted the ladies and he stopped, making Jason to stop too.

"Wait, isn't that your wife and baby mamas having lunch, Yagazie…dude…" Chike pointed at the ladies.

Jason stopped and blinked. This was very uncomfortable and awkward.

"Chike, do something!" Jason said and looked to his friend for help.

"Okay, we are going to slowly back away, Yagazie"

They slowly started walking away when Naya waved at them and smiled.

"Jason, Chike!" She waved them over.

Jason and Chike froze.

Jason looked like he would prefer that earth opened up and swallowed him.

Chike grinned and tapped his shoulder.

"Oh boy! You are screwed!"
