Chapter 25: A light at the end of a tunnel

"Chike knew about it, didn't he? He hinted I should stay away from you but I was too proud to see the real you"

"My name is not on payroll because I am on the run and Veronica agreed to pay me with cash only"

"Fine. I guess, I am going to tear your room apart starting with this awful figurine" Jason raised the glass figurine, ready to smash it but Naya stopped him.

"Fine, I will tell you. Just don't break my grandpa John's Figurine"

"Who are you?" Jason's voice was laced with pure acid.

Naya's heart raced as she contemplated whether to come clean or tell any other lie. Maybe if she was honest, he might understand. Except something at the back of her mind told her it was highly unlikely.

"My name is Cee-Cee…Chloe Cleopatra Whitmore"

Jason had no idea how long he laughed. It was the type of laughter was laced with acid and contempt. Jason wasn't sure who he was laughing at, maybe it was at himself or at Naya. He would figure it out later.

Slowly the laughter stopped and he sat on the bed, he was suddenly tired and he just wanted a place to sit and gather his thoughts. When he had stormed into Naya's room earlier he wanted answers to his questions but he had no idea how to react afterwards. He wasn't just mentally drained, he felt a little bit betrayed by her. It was a feeling he didn't really appreciate.

Naya wiped the first tears that fell from her eyes. She had expected his reaction to the truth but she had no way of softened the blow. He looked so down and disturbed that it tugged at her heart. She took the plastic chair that was discarded near the door and brought it closer to sit down in front him.

"I am sorry, Jason" She muttered and held his hands. She expected him to take his hand away but he didn't, instead he laughed.

"I bet you were having a blast these past few months, watching me run in circles. Was it fun, Naya? I am sorry, I should call Chloe now"

"I would prefer you keep calling Naya. Jason, please"

"Who cares what you prefer? I know I don't!"

Jason removed his hand from Naya's and stood up. He paced the room for a while.

"I am sorry. I can explain" Naya went after him but he threw her a deadly glare to scare her off.

"No need. I figured it out awhile ago as I was trashing your room. I mean, it pretty much tracks and I just had to put two and two together" Jason scratched the back of his head like he was going crazy. It was days like this that he missed his indoor gym in Nigeria. He just need a few minutes with a punching bag to iron out his feelings.

"Some things aren't always in black and white, Jason. You don't know the whole story" Naya blamed the stupid tears for making her voice sound weird; she was worried Jason wouldn't be able to hear her.

"But I do know the whole story. You were pregnant, remember? You told me you had an abortion to keep your psycho husband from hurting your child or so, you led me to believe. But you never did have that abortion, did you?"

"Don't say it. Please, don't say it" Naya murmured pleadingly severally.

"Nolani is your daughter, isn't she?" Jason felt the pain of when seemed to be a thousand invisible swords plunged into him. He was in physical pain right that moment. If he couldn't adopt Nolani then it was the worst possible fate for him. He felt cursed.

"Did you have fun, watching me go round in circle trying to adopt her? Why didn't say anything?" Jason asked..

"Because, I have been living this lie for so long that sometimes it feels true…did you think it was easy for me to watch my child and not be able to let her know I was her mother? Do you know how difficult and consuming it is to treat her like every other child in this orphanage? B-but I did, anyway. I had to. It was the only way to keep her alive. The only way I knew how… b-because if there was an off chance that Kane finds me, I didn't want him to destroy my baby too. Kane would have looked at all ends of the earth for Nolani if he knew he was her father. I am sorry but I can't let that happen"

Naya couldn't stop the tears now. She was sorry she had hurt him but she wasn't sorry she kept her daughter safe. Naya hoped he would one day forgive her. But the look on Jason's face said otherwise.

"I thought she was mine. I felt it. Deep down in my heart, I knew she was mine and now, she isn't. That is cruel, Naya. Not just cruel to me but to her also" Jason felt his wet cheek before he knew he was in tears.

"I know. That is why I am going to let you adopt her"

Jason turned abruptly to face her. He hoped she wasn't kidding.

"I hope you are not just toying with me, Naya because that would be…"

"I am not" Naya stood up and opened the hidden compartment in her wardrobe to pull out a bunch of documents and handed them over to Jason.

"Kane has no claims to my child, at least not legally. His name is not listed on her birth certificate, just mine. Any judge would sign off on the adoption with my say so. I mean, I have document that I filed that makes you her legal guardian in the event of my death"

"No offense but I don't want to be a legal guardian. I want to be her Dad"
