Chapter 34: Keep her safe.

Jason was tired. He turned and started walking back to the duplex. Naya was puzzled. She followed him.

"Jason!"

"You are insane. I can't leave my daughter with you anymore"

"You are not taking my kid away from me, Jason"

"Watch me!"

Naya broke into a run as He walked faster towards the duplex.

"You are not taking her away from me" Naya was so close to him. She could reach out and touch him.

"I have to take her. You are wrecking her life. Making her scared for nothing. I am going to grab her and I am taking her away...sue me" Jason turned for a split second to make sure Naya heard him and when he turned to face the duplex. He felt the sting. He didn't even see his mother and wife appear. Just a hand slapping his face.

"Mom, what was that for?"

Jason couldn't believe his mother slapped him. He rubbed his cheek as he felt himself calm down. It was the second time, Elixir had hit him since he was born. The first was when he accused her of being a murderer four years ago. He deserved it then but not now.

"I didn't raise an idiot! How dare you, Jason? How dare you threaten to take away her kid? No, I raised you better"

Naya was temporarily relieved. If the most powerful woman in Africa was behind her then she had a fighting chance.

"Thank you, Elixir" Naya murmured.

"Oh, shut up!" Elixir turned to her, eyes blazing with anger "Your job is to protect your baby, to make sure everything bad stayed away from your baby. You know what a mother doesn't do, they don't go about telling their babies monsters exist and are out to grab them! What the hell did you achieve by telling my grandbaby she wasn't safe? You know what, both of you are idiots! But if you wake my grandbaby, I am going to make your lives a living hell"

Elixir walked back inside angrily leaving Jason, Mckenna and Naya behind.

Jason decided to speak calmly to her. Maybe it was time for Naya to see reason. He was capable of keeping the child safe.

"Naya, give her to me. I can protect her"

Naya wiped her face. She was going to bed and she wasn't going to stand there and listen to him anymore.

"No. I have kept her alive for six years and I am going to do that for the next seven years. You can have her when she is thirteen like we agreed and if you ever threaten to take her away from me. I will hurt you...bad"

Naya opened the door and walked inside.

Mckenna blinked. Did she hear them right? Kara was going to stay with them permanently as a teenager. Who the hell made that type of arrangement?

"I am sorry, I know this is a bad time but I think I just heard Naya say Kara was going to be staying with you when she turns thirteen" Mckenna asked her husband.

"I would rather take her now but thirteen years old was the deal...yes" Jason answered her. He kept his gaze to the door Naya walked through.

Mckenna cleared her throat "Why?"

Jason turned immediately to look at her. Maybe he didn't hear her right. "Why?" He queried.

"Yes, why"

"Because she is my child. Because she is the heiress to my empire but most importantly because she is my kid, Mckenna. Do you have any problem with that?" He asked her.

Mckenna shook her head. There was nothing she can say that she won't sound like the wicked witch of the south.

"No. I am going to bed" She kissed his cheek and left him outside. But Jason could feel that something was terribly wrong.

That night he went to bed and held her. Maybe he couldn't tell her that everything was going to be alright but he could show her.

"I love you, Oma"

The next morning, everything seem to have returned to normal. Kara was allowed to skip school to spend the day with the family. Elixir conducted her business over the phone with Terry. She was going on a vacation with her new boyfriend since her divorce was legal now. Leaving Jason's father was the best thing that ever happened to her. And with Jason in charge of her empire, she had all the time in the world to find true love.

"When is the flight, Terry?" Elixir asked her personal assistant. "No...I think 4a.m is just fine. Thanks Terry. Bye"

When she dropped the call, her son was standing behind her holding her grandbaby.

"Hey, grandma!"

"Hey, baby. I see you are enjoying the day off" Elixir smiled at her grandchild.

"I miss school but I get to spend the whole day with daddy and Umma"

Elixir looked confused "What's an Umma?"

"It's Korean for Mom. It's what I have to call my daddy's wife" The little girl explained.

"That's smart!"

Jason dropped Kara on the chair.

"Mom, are you going somewhere?"

"Yes. I have a vacation coming up..." Elixir hesitated before she added "With Andrew Spencer....oh don't give me that look! Left to you, I would be a nun"

"Well... it's just hard for me to see you...in that... light" Jason was uncomfortable.

"I am your mother but I am a woman too. I have needs too, Jason"

Jason's face twisted into a knot like he was feeling nauseous "And I have to go throw up if you would excuse me"

"Is he grandma's boyfriend?" Kara asked no one in particular.

"I think I just threw up in my mouth. Kara baby, go and find your Umma. Go now!" Jason had a bad look while Elixir laughed heartily.

Jason went in search of Naya and found her outside near the drawing well fetching some water. He rolled up his sleeves up and took over from her.

"Good morning" Naya murmured.

"Hey"

They stayed in silence for a minute or two before Jason spoke again.

"I am sorry, Naya. What I did last night was simply....I am just sorry"

Naya didn't say anything immediately. She simply looked away.

"You are not wrong. I shouldn't have told her, I am sorry too. I just don't know what to do" She admitted to him.

"What can I do to help?"

"If you want to help me, keep the jet on stand by. I can't shake this horrible feeling that something is about to go horribly wrong!"

Jason understood that she had been through a lot and she was apprehensive. She was seeing things that weren't there. Kane knew nothing of her whereabouts or that he even had a daughter taken away from him, there was no way he would find them in a remote village in Malawi hiding in an orphanage.

But Jason understood that if it was for someone's peace of mind, having the Yagazie Jet on standby wasn't too much. All he could give her was reassurance.

"Okay, Naya. I will have an exit plan in place for both of you just in the event that you need it. But you are not going to"

Naya calmed down just a little bit. It was one problem off of her plate. The gallons were filled to the brim with water and the children in the orphanage had gone to school. It was left for Jason to pick them up and carry them to the kitchen. And he did.

When he came back for the last one, Naya was still there. She walked with him as he took the last of the gallons to the kitchen.

"She is pretty"

Naya admitted at last.

"Are we talking about my wife?"

"Yes, She is pretty and you look happy. I take it everything is fine with both of you" Naya just had to know.

"We are fine" After a second, he added "Finding out about Kara may have overwhelmed her but...she is Mckenna. She is the type of woman that gives her kidney to a friend she just met. She is the type of woman that put up with my inadequacy and still somehow, love me through it. It won't be easy for both of them but it will work out. She is Mckenna and baby girl is my daughter"

Jason had no idea why he felt like he could talk to Naya about Mckenna. Maybe because she was the one that encouraged him not to give her up.

"Good. Kara needs an example that there is still true love out there even though, I didn't find it....so, good"

"Well, you will find it one day" Jason wanted to add if only she would stop hiding but he didn't. He let it be just the way it is.

But even if he wanted to say it, there was simply no way to say it without sounding intrusive or controlling and Naya would strongly object.

"When do you guys leave?" Naya asked.
