Chapter 49: He is happy...is he crazy?

Mckenna parked her car. She took out a red shade of lipstick and applied it on her mouth. She was nervous. There was no point denying it. His message to her last night was vague and it made her nervous. Jason had texted her to meet them at the airport to welcome his mother.

She hadn't texted him back. Mckenna must have picked up her phone a million times to send a message to him but she didn't have the words. It's been three days now and the highest conversation they have had in person was about the private air field the company wanted to buy and it was in a room filled with head of departments.

Mckenna expected things to be awkward between them, at least it was for her but not for her husband. After the meeting, he had asked her about her night and then he kissed her cheek before bidding her goodbye.

Mckenna was surprised and deeply troubled. Now, she was trying to make herself beautiful so she could join the family she abandoned to welcome her mother in law. It was pretty messed up.

Mckenna grabbed her bag and locked her car. She found Jason and Kara near the place he said they would be.

They were strangely wearing almost matching outfits. Kara wore a black pant with white shirt and sunglass. And so did Jason, except his shirt was gray not white.

As soon as Kara saw her, she ran to hug her. She seemed genuinely happy to see Mckenna. She grabbed Mckenna's hand as they walked back to Jason's side.

"Umma, you came! Daddy said you were on vacation. Are you back?" Kara asked.

Mckenna was uncomfortable with the question. She hated that she had to lie about it too. Mckenna composed herself to answer the question but Jason spoke first.

"No. She is not back yet, Bean. But because she is the best wife in the whole wide world, she took time out of her busy schedule to come welcome grandma" Jason moved closer to her and kissed her cheek "Hi, honey"

Mckenna smiled weakly at him. She didn't know whether he was mocking her with his words or being polite. Mckenna didn't have time to find out.

"Jason-" She started talking but Jason saw Elixir walking towards them and whispered it to Kara.

"Grandma!" She took off to jump into Elixir's outstretched hand.

Mckenna moved forward with Jason towards his mother when she saw a familiar face, too. What was Luca Spencer doing in Nigeria?

"Hey, Kenna" Luca's smile showed dimples that somehow made him look younger than he actually was.

"Luca! What are you doing here?" McKenna's smiled was genuine for the first time since she got to the airport.

"Oh well, when Aunt Elixir offered to let me tag along to see the country you are always bragging about, I just had to come plus I miss you too much" Luca pulled her in for a hug.

"Well, I miss you too Luca. How is Aera?" Mckenna wondered whether it was strange to admit she missed another man in the presence of her husband. It wasn't strange, right? Luca was a dear friend and was there when she needed a friendly shoulder to cry on and he was dating Aera, another friend of Mckenna's.

If Jason was uncomfortable with her admission he didn't show it. He hugged his mother and shook Luca's hand.

"Hey baby. Thank you for pick us from the airport" Elixir was happy to see her son.

"Welcome home, Mom. I see you brought home a stray this time"

Elixir gave him a stern look "Be nice, Jason"

Luca ignored the rude comment and went ahead to answer Mckenna's question.

"Aera Sung is fine. We talk all the time now that she is spending a year in Korea to study something I can't pronounce"

"You are right, that sounds like Aera"

Mckenna turned and hugged her mother in law "Welcome home Mom. I missed you dearly. How is Mr Spencer?"

"Yes, how is Mr Spencer? Has he realized yet that you are way out of his league?" Jason asked his mother.

Even though the question was meant for Elixir, Jason's eyes were fixed on Luca. He said what he said to prompt a response from Luca Spencer.

"For once I agree with you, Jason. Aunt Elixir is way out of father's league but maybe he would make an honest woman out of her and we will be brothers" Luca held his gaze. He refuse to cower in his presence.

"Mom has no desire whatsoever to marry your father or anyone again" Jason had a smirk. He was trying to hide how much Luca's words affected him.

"That's a shame. You would have made a good big brother" Luca was genuine. He liked Jason. And he hated that they don't get along anymore.

Kara looked from one adult to another. Their voices were low and normal but she couldn't shake the feeling that they were having a fight. She was fascinated by Luca's skin color. Apart from her mother, Kara had never seen another white person.

Elixir was becoming tired of the boys public passive-aggressive fighting.

"Well, if you boys are done with testosterone measurements...may I suggest we move this crew to the car. I have missed my grandbaby and I want to spend some time with her"

Mckenna was relieved that Elixir intervened. She let out a breathe "Come on, Luca... let's show you the Gaint of Africa"

Luca took her hand and the walked towards the exit.

Jason, Elixir and Kara walked behind in a laid back fashion.

"Jason, they are just friends. Luca didn't mean anything by telling your wife he missed her" Elixir told her son.

"Mom, I know they are just friends. Mckenna loves only me and I love her too. I am not threatened by Luca Spencer. I just hate that he is the reason I spent two years away from the woman of my dreams. I am not ready to forgive him yet"

"That's a shame. Luca looks up to you. He likes you and you can't blame him for being honest with his friend" Elixir took Kara's hand "Come on, sweet girl. Let's go home"

Mckenna left her car at the airport after Jason sent a text message to her that they would be taking his car to avoid questions from his mother. He promised to have the driver bring it back to Elena's house by the end of the day.

So now, she was sitting in the car with him as he drove while Elixir, Kara and Luca sat at the back.

Mckenna's eye wandered towards him from time to time but Jason never looked at her. He simply kept his eyes on the road until they got to the mansion. He opened the car door for her like he usually do and Mckenna came down like she was a robot on a battery.

Kara's eyes widened as she saw the Mansion. She stood in the awe of it. She had never seen a bigger castle.

"Wow! Grandma, is this your house?" Kara looked around with twinkle in her eyes. She knew she was from a wealthy family but her father's house looked normal and the duplex in Malawi was normal too. But this...was gigantic!

Elixir laughed heartily. "Technically, it's your father's mansion now. The deed is in his name but I don't think he likes it very much"

"But it's a castle... like in my story book!" Kara didn't believe anyone would hate a castle.

"Do you like it?" Elixir asked her.

"Yes!"

"Good because one day, it will be yours and I hope you will take care of it" Jason told her.

"Will I have to share it with anyone?" Kara was apparently calculating her inheritance.

Jason laughed lightly and answered "If you get a baby brother or sister, then you will have to share with them, don't you?"

"Can I boss them around and make them do everything I want?" Kara asked with so much joy.

Elixir shook her head as she laughed. "You heard her, she needs a sibling to boss around. I wouldn't mind more grandbabies too"

Elixir looked at both Jason and Mckenna like she was passing across a message.

"Mom, we are both focused on our careers right now and hopefully, soon but not now" Jason answered his mother immediately he found out how uncomfortable his wife was becoming.

"Hmm, I raised you and I had a career too. It's not impossible, you know"

Elixir took Kara's hand "Come on, Luca. You must be tired, let's get you a meal and a bed, darling"

They all walked towards the house leaving Mckenna and Jason behind.

There was an awkward silence as soon as they left before Jason spoke. He looked put together like he was in the presence of a close friend or a stranger or anyone other than the wife that left him a few days ago.

"Thank you... for coming to the airport to welcome her"

Note: Hi guys....What do you think of Jason's behavior towards Mckenna. And should Jason forgive Luca Spencer?
