Chapter 66: Bad good

McKenna first drove Kara to school. They were thirty minutes late but it was before first period.

"Have a great day at school, darling. I love you" McKenna told her as she opened the car door.

"Bye, Mommy" Kara closed the door after her, leaving a surprised McKenna behind.

McKenna smiled brightly before she drove off. She didn't want to make a big deal out of it. But it was a big deal, it was the first time her daughter openly admitted that she was her mother in English language.

She was over the moon. Then her phone rang.

"Mrs. Ekoh-Yagazie, Good morning"

"Yes, Mr. Matthew....what did you find out?"

"Jackson Donna had a meeting with Elvis today. He wants the same contract as you and I am afraid Mr. Elvis is leaning towards the Donna group. I am sorry"

"Oh, that's fine. Mr. Elvis would hardly award a contract to a company that is being investigated by the IRS" McKenna told him.

She regretted it immediately. She played dirty but not personal and now she may just have crossed a line by making the IRS investigation public. By noon tomorrow, everyone in the country will be reading it on a newspaper.

"The Donna group is under investigation?" Matthew asked her.

"Wouldn't that be a dream come true for me, Mr. Matthew? But no, it is just wishful thinking. I got to go" McKenna hung up.

She was almost at her office building when she dialed Jason's number.

"Hey, love"

"Baby hi, I am in the middle of something at the moment. Is everything okay with you and Kara?"

McKenna could hear him flip some documents.

"We are fine. She called me Mommy" McKenna laughed heartily.

"Honey..."

"Jason, I know that I shouldn't get this excited and it might be a slip of tongue and I am not really her mother, Naya is. If you like we could have a conversation with her and explain that Naya should be mommy while I remain Umma" McKenna spoke logically.

"You feed her, cloth her, make sure she did her assignments and yell at her if need be. Most importantly, you love her...I might be wrong but that sounds like a mother's job. If she wants to call you mommy then let her. I love you and I have to go"

"Jason wait... remember we have to go to your mother's by 1pm" McKenna knew that he had forgotten about it by the way he paused just for a little bit.

"Of course I remember but just to make sure you remember, tell me again what we are going there to do"

McKenna chuckled but played along "Mom is announcing her interest to run for office. The press will be there and so will we for moral support. Did I get it right?"

"What would I do without you?" Jason's deep throat laughter made McKenna laugh even more.

"Forget half the things you are supposed to remember. Something I feel like you married me because of my photographic memory… to be your calendar" McKenna joked with him.

"I think you got that upside down, babe. You married me because I am smart, handsome and every woman's dream husband. Okay, maybe not a dream husband...but definitely fantasy husband, you know what I mean"

McKenna could hear people talking in the background. She knew that Jason was about to be swapped at work.

"I know. I hit the jack pot"

"No, I did. I hate to go but Elena and a dude I don't know just walked in. I love you, bye" Jason hung up.

McKenna picked up her bag and entered the building. She had to interview for the post of secretary and head of marketing since Elena left.

She could hardly believe that few years ago, she was a secretary herself.

She made it half way to her office when she came across Jessica.

"Good morning, cousin" McKenna was cheerful.

"You sound and look cheerful. Did you win a lottery?" Jessica asked her with a smile.

They both walked up to her office.

"Just happy that's all. Jess, do you plan to go to Mom's announcement today or would you do me a solid and be in charge of the office while I am gone, maybe have the conference call with Elvis Corp. and Bella designs?"

Jessica smiled and shook her head. She knew her cousin in law wanted her to stay.

"I will stay if it will make you happy, Boss. I need the documents for the Elvis contracts and before I forget, your step mother is here to see you"

McKenna raised her eyebrows. Maybe she misheard Jessica but did she say Jackson's wife was there to see her?

"Are you sure, Jess?"

"Hmm-hum" Jess took the document McKenna handed over to her. "Should I send her away?"

"I would love nothing more but family is family...Is family and I am curious. Send her up, will you?" McKenna told Jessica.

"Will do"

Fifteen minutes later, Joan Donna opened the door of McKenna's office and entered.

"Hi, McKenna. I hope this is a good time to talk" Joan sat on the chair McKenna pointed to her.

"How can I help you, Mrs. Donna?" McKenna tried to hide her irritation.

"You are your father's daughter, aren't you? Always direct and straight to the point"

Joan tried to lighten up the mood but McKenna's face was neutral. She could see that her pregnancy was beginning to show. And even though Joan wore bogus clothes to hide her baby bump, McKenna could tell.

"Thanks" McKenna said sarcastically to Joan for comparing her to Jackson "I still need to know why you are here"

"Okay. The IRS is coming after your father and I want you to stop them" Joan unconsciously rubbed her baby bump.

"I don't have that kind of pull, Joan..."

"I know but your mother in law does. The head of IRS is a good friend...a distant relative of the Yagazies I think"

Joan watched McKenna and she was silent for a while.

"If Jackson goes to prison, my children will grow up without a father or family. Amazing and Max can't stand me. You obviously want nothing to do with me and my parents are dead. It's just Jackson that is all I have. Just Jackson and my kids"

McKenna's eyes went to her stomach and it lingered "You are having twins?"

"Yes, I am. And they are your brother and sister whether you like me or not...and they need their father" Joan's eyes were beginning to tear up "Stupid pregnancy hormones...even food commercials makes me cry"

"I don't hate you, Joan. I will have a talk with my mother in law but promise anything" McKenna replied at last.

"Thank you and can you please keep this between you and me... Jackson doesn't know I came to you"

"Yeah, Dad is too proud to ask for help from the daughter he abandoned. But we can't choose our families, can we?"

McKenna's eyes went to the door as it opened and out of the whole people in the universe, Amazing entered her office.

"Amazing! What are you doing here?" McKenna felt all of a sudden like she was cheating on her sister with their step mother.

"What is she doing here?" Amazing pointed at Joan instead.

"She just came to talk. Did you know she is having twins?" McKenna said and laughed awkwardly.

"I should care about that, why? Joan, leave my sister alone! You already took my father, isn't that enough?" Amazing glared at the girl on the chair.

There was silence for a minute.

"Joanie" Joan whispered but kept her face down. "Joanie... that's what you used to call me, Maze"

Amazing was silent too.

"You remember when we were seven and we made that friendship bracelet, we swore to be best friends forever, Maze. What happened to us?" Joan's voice sounded unsteady.

"What happened to us? Are you freaking kidding me? You screwed my father and became my stepmother! I would say plenty happened to us!" Amazing yelled at her.

Joan seemed to jump out of her skin. She was crying visibly now.

"Sorry, Maze...I am so sorry. But I am pregnant and my husband might be going to jail. I am terrified and I kind of need my best friend" Joan told her.

"How old were you when you first slept with my father, Joanie? I got to know" Amazing asked at the already distressed pregnant girl.

"Amazing! Stop it!" McKenna couldn't stay quiet anymore.

"No, McKenna! She married our Dad when she was nineteen. Don't you want to know whether Jackson is a pedophile too? Maybe they started having sex when she was ten"

"No! We started seeing each other on my nineteenth birthday. And your father is a good man and I love him!" Joan spoke with conviction.

"Then you don't need me. You have Jackson, right?" Amazing headed for the door.

"Amazing, where are you going?" McKenna asked her.

"Wherever the hell that is not here!"

Amazing banged the door on her way out. She got to the car and dialed her boyfriend's number.

"Hey, where are you? I am upset and I need to do some fun"

Kane's throaty voice was audible since Amazing placed the call on speaker.

"I have a place in mind. Do you think your niece; Kara would like to join us?"
