Chapter 7: She kissed my best friend

In an attempt to hold back the tears, a loud moan escaped Naya's mouth and the wall she built for years, brick by brick came crashing down without warning. Naya screamed like she was fighting an invisible force of nature.

"Ahhhhh! Ahhhh!"

Naya slapped her face with both hands and knowing that her first scream released some of the pent up tension and pressure in her body, she tried screaming again but this time around, she ended it with a teary voice.

She heard footsteps moving towards where she stood and she wasn't surprised. Her screams must have echoed through the Orphanage and someone must have come down to find out what was going on with her.

She wiped her face with the helm of her blouse. If it was one of the orphans, she did not want them to see her in such an ungracious mood. She turned just in time to see Chike, Jason's best friend standing just a few feet away from her.

Naya sniffed back and turned away from him. Seeing Chike was worse than having one of the children see her in disarray.

"There were days I too wanted to scream at the world, I guess you are braver than yours truly, Naya" Chike said as he searched his cloth for a tissue or handkerchief.

He found a neatly folded handkerchief in his left pocket and handed it over to Naya. She took it from him and wiped her face.

"Come on, we should get you out of that dirty pond sometime soon since it is obvious that they are some nasty creatures waiting to feed from your well-nourished feet" Chike extended his hand to her and she took it.

Naya was fairly able to control her blubber. Chike made her sit on the wooden chair while he looked for her shoes. He found them near the pond and helped her put it back on her feet.

"I guess you saw Jason storm out of here" Naya was a tad embarrassed.

Chike's face remained neutral as he squat down to face her. He was truly concerned about Naya and Jason. He had never seen Jason so angry and he had never see Naya cry either.

"Are you alright?" Chike asked her. Naya nodded slowly as another batch of tears flooded her face again.

"He didn't give me the chance to explain. Well, nevertheless I will be gone by tomorrow"

Chike gave her a listening ear even though he couldn't piece together half the things she was telling him. He wasn't one to judge but Jason was behaving irrationally by storming off and leaving a distressed woman all alone.

Chike knew his friend doesn't have his sense of chivalry and noble behavior where it comes to the fairer sex. Chike could only attribute it to the fact that Jason was raised by a strong idealistic and opinionated female. As such, he sees every woman as someone capable of handling themselves.

Chike wiped her face with his hand in a tender way and hugged her. She didn't resist the hug at all. She took the comfort he offered and allowed him to take some of the weight off her shoulders. Slowly her sobs came to an end and she snuggled deeper into his embrace. Even though, it was getting darker and Chike knew they should be going back to the orphanage.

Naya hands went to his chest as she slowly lifted her face from Chike's chest. She stared momentarily at him, tracing his unique and beautiful structure. Chike was caught up in the moment too and before he could react, Naya's pressed her mouth to his.

Naya could taste the sweet ropy fragrance of wine Chike must have been drinking earlier and then her tongue entered his mouth. Chike couldn't glimpse her face but the instantaneous and urgent thrust of her tongue in his mouth was jaw dropping. Naya's heartbeat became faster and faster like if she kept kissing him, her heart would jump out of her chest. She wasn't sure whether her fast heartbeat was due to excitement or fear.

Before Chike could remove his mind from the dark place it was going, Naya's arms were around him, soft and delicate, it was everything he needed. The kinder experience of the world but yet again he refused to go to the dark place. Not only was the woman not in the right emotional space to make decision, he couldn't do that to his best friend.

Chike tried to push her away as gently as he could but she was awfully strong for a woman of her size. Naya felt the rush of helplessness and the sinking yielding and the surging tide of warmth that swept through her, almost making her limp.

With the knowledge that gentle pushing won't do the job and in as much as he knew where his heart stood on the matter, his body was oblivious and was beginning to wake up from it slumber. Chike held her shoulder as gently as he could while he maintained his firmness and pushed her away from him.

"I am really flattered Naya but No. you have to deal with your problems with Jason and as delighted as that kiss was, we can never do it again"

"Let me guess, you are disgusted too. And just like Jason, I am a plague because I am unfortunate enough to be married to Kane"

"You are married and you slept with Jason? Oh man, now I know why he was in such a foul mood" Chike was worried.

"I don't understand Jason! I am separated from my husband" Naya explained.

"You may not know this but Jason is not exactly tight with his father and all his life, he has tried to be the direct opposite of James. It's why he never hit women or children. It's why he has a rule against sleeping with married women…Naya I think you just made him break one of his cardinal rules" Chike was stressed out about the whole thing.

Naya lowered her lashes, she knew Jason wasn't high on moral codes but the little he had he took seriously; when he almost broke his hand saving her from a fall was evidence enough. And worst, he left the orphanage for days and refused to talk to her. Things were barely going back to normal, when he caught her with the gun.

Naya felt guilty that she wasn't sorry that she slept with him, she only felt bad that he caught her with a gun and she had to ruin a mutually beneficial arrangement with them. Her moral compass was way off and needed calibrating but she also had to make things right with Jason. He was good to her and she had hurt him now.

"What should I do? How can I fix this Chike?" Naya eyes contained a hint of tears.

"Naya, you are the most sensible creature I have ever seen. You are practically a voice of reason and good. And he might not know this now but you didn't set out to hurt him. My advice to you is to tell him the truth. He needs to hear from you what a horrible man Kane was…I am assuming he was horrible, wasn't him?"

"He was horrible, Chike" Naya confirmed his suspicion.

"Great! Now if you will be kind enough as to walk back to the house alone, I am going to stay here and come up with a nicer way of telling my best friend I kissed his emotionally vulnerable girlfriend with neck still intact" Chike said slowly as if he was in deep thoughts.

"But you didn't do anything wrong! I kissed you. I should be the one to take the blame" Naya argued with him.

"Like I said, you are the voice of reason but I am afraid, this is between Jason and I. moreover, you have enough problems with Jason" Chike insisted.

"You are one of the good guys, Chike. And I am so sorry; I have caused you this heartache and problem with Jason"

"Walk safely home, Naya"
