Chapter 76: Time to fight 2

Mckenna honked twice when she got to the Donna house. This was the first time since she was seventeen she was entering Donna's residence.

Mckenna kept checking her wristwatch. She had less than an hour to the designated time to get the money to Kane. The gate opened and she drove in.

"Follow me, the money is in Jackson's safe" Joan said and got down from the car.

Mckenna followed her to Jackson's room.

"Joan..."

Mckenna was speechless. She was never nice to the girl or made an attempt to get to know her yet she was risking her marriage to help her.

Joan spared her glance but not for long. She walked into her closet and came out with a suitcase.

"Jackson has a rainy day fund inside a safe. I am hoping it up to 2 million dollars"

Joan dropped the suitcase on the bed and took off the painting of paradise on the wall to reveal a safe.

She turned around to look at Mckenna before she entered the code and opened it.

"Open the suitcase please" Joan told her as she started taking out dollars from the safe.

"This should be roughly around the amount you need" Joan arranged the money and closed the suitcase.

She handed it to Mckenna and she took it.

"Joan..." Mckenna still hadn't figured out what to say to her.

"Can you tell me what the money's for, Mckenna?" Joan asked her.

"I will...but I can't now. But know that I won't forget this kindness in a hurry. Thank you Joan"

Mckenna tightened her grip on the suitcase as she walked out of the room.

Joan sat down and exhaled. She took her phone out of her bag and she dialed Jackson's number.

"Joan..."

"I gave her the money in your safe... everything, Jackson. If the government freezes our accounts then we will be officially broke. I am sorry" Joan rubbed her pregnant belly as she talked.

"What do you want me to say, Joan?" Jackson asked her.

"Nothing. Mckenna has the money she desperately needs and I understand why you turned her away, Jackson" Joan removed her shoes and climbed into the bed.

Jackson was mute.

"You are a good father, Jackson"

"No. I just ruined any chance of amendment with her, Joan. It's official...my oldest hates me. I am a terrible father" Jackson cleared the fog in his throat.

"I disagree. You made some mistakes with her. But as soon as she was in trouble, you came to her rescue. You asked me to give her the money, remember? but I don't understand why she can't know it came from you" Joan yawned and inhaled sharply.

"The IRS is coming for me. Over my dead body will I let them go after my family too. It stops with me. It's better if my children stays far away from me"

The line went dead.

Mckenna had one more stop to make before her time was up. She had to max out Jason's ATM cards and clear both her account and Kara's.

To make it easier on her, Mckenna transferred all her funds to Kara and told Elena to do the same.

She drove into the bank and asked to see the manager.

"Mrs Ekoh-Yagazie, Good morning. How may I make your day better?"

"How are the kids and the wife, Mr. Barry?" Mckenna smiled brightly at him.

"They are...good. my oldest just graduated from the University with first class" Mr Barry told her and pointed to a chair.

"You are a proud papa. Congratulations"

"Thank you. What can I do for you, Mrs Ekoh-Yagazie?"

"I want to withdraw the money in this account" Mckenna pushed the account details to him.

Barry frowned. It was an unusual request.

"How much do you really want?"

"I want everything, Mr Barry. I want it, now please" Mckenna was getting impatient but she kept a smile on her face.

"Everything?" Mr Barry repeated after him.

"Yes. And repeating everything I say is a complete waste of time, don't you agree with me?" Mckenna asked him.

"Yes, of course. I should...I will get the money ready. Fill out these paperwork for it"

"I want the money in dollars. Thank you, Mr Barry"

Mckenna was in and out of the bank in under forty minutes.

She still had about thirty minutes before the designated time. She decided to call Naya and Chike.

"Mckenna, this is not a good time"Naya sounded like she was busy.

"I have the money Kane wants. Did you find them yet?" Mckenna asked her.

Naya was quiet.

"Naya!" Mckenna yelled.

Chike took the phone from Naya and spoke to Mckenna.

"We didn't find them. We got to the place but Kane had already moved them and left the tracking device behind"

Mckenna nodded like Chike can see her. She took the phone away from her ear to take in air to steady herself.

"When Kane calls me in twenty minutes, I am giving him the money and I am getting my family back" Mckenna told both of them.

"No! No! You can't trust Kane. Do you hear me? You can't trust Kane! He will take your money and he will disappear with Kara!" Naya yelled at her over the phone.

"What's my alternative? If I don't give it to him, he will kill them. You have to have faith... because that is all we have" Mckenna hung up.

Mckenna started the car. She needed to go back to the house to dress appropriately before Kane called her.

She almost drove off when her phone rang.

"What?! I am doing it and you can't stop me..."

"Mrs Ekoh-Yagazie, it's Daniel again.... Did I catch you at a bad time?"

"No. Sorry, I thought I was talking to someone else. What can I do for you?"

"They are on the move, ma. They are going after Jackson Donna"

"Thank you for the information...I have to go now" she hung up.

Mckenna sat still for a while. Her mind raced with a lot of information. At this rate she would be mad before she is twenty five.

Mckenna must have sat still for quit some time because when her phone rang again, it was Kane.

"Do you have my money?"

"Yes. Yes, I do" Mckenna answered softly. She was tired of yelling or sobbing. She was numb now.. nothing can hurt her.

"Then take it to..."

"Yeah! Yeah! I am going to need proof of life, Kane before you say any other thing" Mckenna interrupted him by saying.

"But you don't call..."

"I am going to hang up now, if the next voice I hear is not my husband's and daughter's. I am tired of your game. We are going to do it my way"

McKenna wondered where her sudden boldness was coming from. She was just tired of people pushing her around like she had no backbone.

"I make the..."

"Put my husband on the phone or goodbye" Mckenna's voice was steady.

Mckenna was quiet as she waited for Kane to make up his mind.

"Hello.... Mckenna"

"Oh my God! Jason! Are you hurt? Is Kara alright?" Mckenna was flooded with relief.

"We are fine. How are you doing, baby?" Jason asked her.

"I am... hanging in there. I am-"

"Enough! Now, I just forwarded an address to you. Bring the money with you. You have ten minutes" Kane told her

"Of course. You will get the money, Kane but not in ten minutes. You will get it in an hour" Mckenna hung up on him.

She dialed Naya's number again.

"I bought you an hour. Use it wisely or so help me God, I will hand the money over to him"

"Thank you, Mckenna"

Mckenna wanted to go home but something kept pulling her back.

Mckenna knew it was her conscience. She might not want to do anything for Jackson but it won't be fair on Joan's twins to grow up without their father.

"Damn it!"

Mckenna dialed Elixir's number.

"Mom, hi....I need your help"

"Hey darling, I was wondering when you will call me" Elixir answered her.

"Why?" Mckenna sounded suspicious.

"About your father and the rumors about the IRS going after him. I take it you want me to stop it" Elixir asked her.

"I am sorry but yes. He is no use to me if he is in jail. Can you make them back off, please?" Mckenna asked her.

"Sure thing, baby. I haven't been able to talk to Jason since yesterday, is he alright?"

"Mom, he is fine. I guess he is busy. Thanks Mom, I have to go now. I love you"

Mckenna hung up.

****

Kane was becoming impatient. All of a sudden, Mckenna was talking like she knew something he didn't and he was uncomfortable about it.

Kara blinked and looked at her father.

"Daddy, my tummy hurts" Kara clutched her abdomen.

"Are you hungry, Bean?" Jason asked her.

"No, my tummy really hurts!" Kara was close to tears.

Jason turned to Kane who was busy brandishing his gun to everyone "At least let me hold her. She is in pain"

"Daddy!" Kara was wriggling now. "It hurts!"

"Kane, please...untie us!" Jason tried to move.

Kane slapped him across the face and pointed the gun at him.

"What is your wife planning?"
