Chapter 91: When it rains

"Keep your right hand higher, bean" Jason told his daughter.

Kara raised her right hand higher than her left and she punched the bag her father was holding.

It's been almost two weeks since she started kickboxing with her father. She liked it and she practiced with him at home while her sensei taught her moves four times a week.

"Nice punch baby girl" Mckenna said from the chair she was sitting on.

Kara smiled and tried out her kick too.

"Mom, come and join us!" Kara invited Mckenna.

Mckenna took out her left hand to examine her nails "Nah, I am going to take a rain check on that. I am not breaking a finger. Time's up, guy. You have dinner with your aunt, Kara"

Kara still kept her hands up. "Five more minutes, Umma, I just need to kick this bag out of Dad's hand"

Kara tried three more times before she was able to.

"Go on, Kara…take a shower and wear something nice, okay?" Mckenna watched as she left the gym to go to her bedroom.

Jason took off the gloves he was wearing and his shirt. He took the towel hanging on the wall and wiped his face.

Mckenna watched him. Damn! He was sexy and somehow the sweat made him even hotter.

"You are looking at me like you want to have me for dinner" Jason said with a grin.

"I want to have you for dinner" Mckenna said and stood up. She was standing closer to him now, running her finger all over his bare chest.

Jason kissed her. It was just a graze of his mouth on hers.

"I love your body" she whispered to him.

"Just my body? I feel so objectified" Jason feigned anger.

Mckenna smiled and kissed his chest. She stared at him. She loved looking at him. She wondered how they beat the odds that was against them to be together.

Jason wasn't an easy man to be in love with since he objected to love so much in the beginning.

But now, Mckenna could comfortably say they would die for each other.

"You are a miracle" she whispered to him "...my miracle"

Jason wasn't smiling anymore. He simply stared at her. Her big bright eyes, her beautiful lips which attracted him to her in the first place and her kindness, and the fact that she didn't give up on him…everything about Mckenna made him grateful.

"If I am your miracle then you are my saviour. You pulled me out of…"

"Eww…seriously, guys!"

They turned around to find their daughter standing there still in her wet clothes.

"What can we do for you, Kara?" Mckenna said with a smile.

"I can't unzip my pants, I think it's stuck" she complained to them

"I will get to it as soon as I finishing kissing your father" Mckenna turned around and she kissed Jason one more time before she left to help her with the zip.

"Go take a shower, Kara" Mckenna pointed to the door when Kara's phone beeped and she turned and raced out of the room.

"Now, they are texting each other" Mckenna said and stood upright.

"He is asking if they can get ice cream on Monday during lunch…how dare that criminal?" Jason said and read a text message from his phone.

Mckenna turned abruptly.

"Wait! Are you reading Kara's text messages?"

"Yes, I had our phones sync. Every single text she gets, I will get it too…every single phone call too" Jason answered

"You just got less sexy real fast, Jason. She is seven and he is eight years old, all they are going to talk about is ice cream and video games…"

"He is teaching her how to play chess not video game" Jason interrupted her by saying.

"She is Kara, she thinks kissing is gross. She likes a boy but that's just about it. They are not going to run off and get married anytime soon. Un-sync your phone from hers, Jason. It's not a request" Mckenna turned and walked inside.

"But what if…"

"Undo whatever it is that you've done. In this family we don't invade people's privacy and that includes our daughter's" Mckenna walked out suppressing a smile.

Later as she poured peanut into a plate, Jason approached her.

He was no longer sweaty. He must have taken a shower and was currently dressed in a white t-shirt, black jeans, brown jacket and white sneakers. He looked handsome.

"Did you do as I asked, sweetheart?" Mckenna asked and ate one peanut.

"Hmm…yes, the madness and the obsession is over" Jason said and kissed her neck.

Kara came down wearing a blue jean and black top.

"I am ready. Let's go!"

"Kara, I am thinking we should invite Lucy and your new friend for dinner with their parents on Saturday" Mckenna told the girl.

Kara's eyes narrowed just a little bit "Why?"

"Because I like to know who you are hanging out with. Now, have a great date with your Aunt" Mckenna said.

"Now, who is obsessing?" Jason asked her with a raised eyebrow.

"The difference between you and I, Jason, is that I am doing it the right way"

"Showoff!"

Jason chuckled and left with his daughter.

When they got to the restaurant, it was easy to spot Queenie there.

"That's aunt Queenie!" Kara walked faster and hugged the already standing lady.

"You look beautiful, Queenie. I can't believe that you are eighteen already" Jason said and kissed her cheek.

"Well, believe it…I am legally an adult"

"No, you are my baby sister" Jason sat down.

One moment Queenie was smiling and the next she had a frown. She was breathing differently, even Jason noticed it.

"Are you alright, Queenie?" He asked the sister.

"Don't be mad, Jason…just give it a chance, please" Queenie said as her eyes darted towards the door.

Jason followed her gaze to the door and he saw the reason behind her nervousness.

"Have you gone mad?!" He said in-between his clenched jaw "Come on ,Kara…we are going home"

Jason grabbed Kara's hand but it was too late already.

The pair of the darkest shade of gray eyes he would know anywhere stared at him.

Neither of them moved a muscle, Jason could hear his own heartbeat, if his eyes could shoot lasers, it would be right now.

"Look Dad, I think it's grandpa!" Kara sounded excited and oblivious to what was going on between her father and grandfather.

"Hello, son" James' slightly hoarse voice made Jason's irritation grow.

He turned to his sister "We will talk about this later, meanwhile bring Kara straight home in an hour. I am out of here"

Jason walked out as Kara grabbed James' hand and he sat down beside her.

Queenie went after her brother and caught up with him in the parking lot.

"Jason…Jason…Jason, please wait!" Queenie called out to him.

Jason didn't stop until she physically ran ahead of him and blocked his path.

"Please, stop walking. I am out of breath!"

"What! What the hell were you thinking inviting James to the restaurant?" Jason asked her.

"I was thinking he is my father…he is our father, Jason. How long will you keep this rift between the two of you going? For the sake of Kara, get over yourself and make peace with the man that brought you into this world!" Queenie sounded like she had practiced her answers while staring at the mirror.

Jason blinked and smiled but it was a sad smile.

"Wait! You think I am overreacting?" He asked his sister in a low voice.

"He made some mistakes with you but he is human, Jason and he wants to make amends"

"Did Daddy tell you that?" Jason said sarcastically.

"No but I know he does…deep down, he does Jason" Queen held his hand.

Jason took it off.

"What did he get you for your thirteenth birthday, sister?" Jason asked her

"I don't remember…a laptop, I think?" Queenie wondered why it was so important to him.

Jason was quiet.

"Why do you hate him so much, Jason?"

"I hate him because he hates me too. Do you know how I know? Because he told me so himself a day before my thirteenth birthday"

Queenie took a step back. "You are lying to me, Jason. No father would do that to his child"

"Well, mine did" Jason blinked to hold back the tears that were beginning to pull in his eyes.

Damn it! He wasn't a child anymore. He shouldn't be feeling this way anymore. He wasn't a thirteen year old kid anymore seeking James' acceptance. He was Jason and he was powerful for goodness sake!

It didn't stop the stupid feeling from overwhelming him.

"When I was thirteen, I asked our father why he hates me so much. He told me some people aren't just worth loving" Jason sniffed back.

"He didn't mean you Jason" Queenie shook her head vigorously.

"I thought so too before he looked me in the eye and said, people like you Jason…they aren't worth loving. And so, I told him I was going to hate him too without feeling guilty about it. So, to answer your question…I hate James because he first hated me"

"Jason, I am…"

"Get my kid home to me in an hour, Queenie. And next time, do not ambush me!"
