Chapter 96: Is it too late to say sorry 2?.

Mckenna had no idea how she survived the dinner with Lucy's parents or the answer she gave to Kara when she asked about the divorce. She just vaguely remember walking Aniston and her family to their car and then the sound of her seven years bolting her door to keep her out.

Now, she was clutching a bottle of wine for comfort while she stared repeatedly at the door knowing fully well that Jason would walk through them any moment from now.

But soon, minutes turned into hours and daylight exchanged for the pitch blackness of a moonless night.

Now, Mckenna was getting antsy and paranoid. She imagined Jason lying in a ditch somewhere bleeding to death. She dialed his number a couple of times but it was disconnected.

When next she looked at the clock, it was a minute past 9pm. Jason never stay out that late with a heads up.

Mckenna panicked and dialed Elixir's number.

"Hi Mom…yes, we are fine. I…emmm…is Jason there with you?" Mckenna blurted out since she didn't know how else to phrase the question.

"No. Is everything alright?" Elixir's voice was filled with concern.

"It's fine, we are fine. We just had a quarrel and he stormed out" Mckenna gave her the short version of the story.

"Oh sweetheart, he just needs a little bit of space. I am sure he will turn up soon" Elixir encouraged her.

"Thanks, Mom. Good night"

Mckenna hung up.

Later, she switched on the television as a way to stop herself from opening another bottle of wine. She couldn't exactly get drunk when she was the only adult in the house.

She also dialed Chike's number. If Jason was not in the mansion then he was probably with his best friend.

"Hey, Chike…hi. Is Jason with you?"

"No. What's going on? Is he missing again?"

She could hear the tension and fear in Chike's voice and since Mckenna didn't want to divulge her marital issues to him, she went with the comfortable lie.

"Oh no…we are fine. He is probably in the mansion arguing with his mother about Spencer again. Thanks Chike, I am hanging up now"

Mckenna knew when the rain started, it was a heavy downpour that came with thunder and lightening.

The frustration she was experiencing grew with every hour. Mckenna cranked up the television's volume to stop herself from thinking too much. Except what was in the news made her terrified even more.

(Newscaster: The death of a seven year old child who was a victim of a hit and run car has left the nation in anger. The child whose identity is yet to be revealed was left by the side of the road where she slowly bled to death over the course of five hours…)

Mckenna switched the television off when they started showing a video clip of the child, he was almost Kara's age and it affected Mckenna in ways she didn't know was possible.

Mckenna almost made it for another thirty minutes when she decided to go and look for Jason.

She first went upstairs to check on Kara, her bedroom door was still locked. Mckenna decided not to wake the angry child and so, she turned around to grab her raincoat and flashlight in her bedroom.

She opened the door and locked her daughter inside the house. She then instructed the gateman to watch the door and to also open the gate for her.

Mckenna was miserable and sad.

Her lips was tightly pressed together to prevent her from saying more than she was supposed to say to the gateman.

Because it would really be awkward if she told him what was going on with her family.

Then the rain became even louder.

Damn! The rain came down on her in full force.

Mckenna blamed herself. Why? Why had she slapped him even when she knew what he had passed through in the hands of his father?

Stupid! Stupid!

Mckenna wanted to kick herself. How could she be so stupid?

Jason was probably lying dead somewhere because she was insane for a bloody minute!

She pushed the rising panic in her chest down, it was already difficult to see clearly without an extra disadvantage of tears.

"Where are you, Jason? I am so sorry"

She whispered out loud like the heavy wind would carry her apology to wherever he was and he would come back home to her.

Mckenna pulled the gate open and stepped out. There was no light since her country had a strong objection to leaving the electric on during a downpour.

So, it was pitch black. She switched on her touchlight and she was determined to search her right hand side before searching her left.

Mckenna patrolled the neighborhood for about three times before she gave up and Since she couldn't exactly go back inside and tell her daughter that she had failed to produce her father, she made herself comfortable on the concrete chair a few inches away from her house.

She simply sat down and removed the rain coat. She hated getting drenched but she needed a cover to cry.

Thankfully, the rain was letting up. Mckenna thought about the last time she was sitting like this under a rain and it was that day, Jason forced her to cook for himself and his then fiancee, Amazing Donna.

"Hey!" The voice startled Mckenna. She took her touchlight and she flashed it on the person's face. Where did he come from? Was he a thief or a murder? Was her life over because she decided to sit in the most deserted street in the history of the streets.

"Jason!" Mckenna whispered.

The relief that flooded her made her unable to move, it was just like electricity was surging through her and she was too paralyzed to let go of the power source.

"What are you doing sitting in the rain?!" Jason was surprised.

He didn't understand what was going on and she didn't look like she was going to explain it to him anytime soon.

Mckenna instead pressed both hands to her face and she allowed the panic that she pushed down and the tears she was trying to hold back, flow out of her.

She shook from the cold and relief, she really didn't plan to sit in the most deserted place crying like a hungry infant that was on her way back from seeing a doctor.

"Oh, sweetheart" Jason sat down beside her and pulled her into his arms.

"I am so sorry. I wasn't thinking" Mckenna whispered over and over to him.

"Mckenna, what are you doing sitting in the rain? You could get sick."

"Someone hit a little girl and left her to die on the streets. She bled for hours with no help whatsoever and then you were gone. And I called everyone I knew but….but…you were gone, Jason and a little girl died. I have a daughter almost her age who refuses to speak to me. What was supposed to do? W-what the fuck was I supposed to do?! Go back home and tell Kara that a little girl died from a hit and run and I can't find her father because I am a selfish bitch who assaulted him!" Mckenna yelled in between sobs.

"I am here, now Oma. I am not going anywhere" Jason ran his hand through her hair.

He helped Mckenna up from where she was sitting and they walked back home. Jason was still angry but he didn't let go of her.

Once inside, they didn't even make it to their bedroom when they came face to face with their daughter, Kara.

"I was looking for you" Kara told Mckenna.

"Sorry, baby. I was…was…" Mckenna didn't want to cry again.

"She was looking for me, Bean" Jason answered.

"So, you are not getting a divorce?" Kara asked with a hopeful face.

"Divorce? Why would you think…." Jason was confused and he was interrupted by Kara.

"Liam's parents got a divorce because they fought all the time!" She told her parents.

"Honey, we are not…We are never getting a divorce. I love your mother! I mean have you seen her? I would be a fool to let her go, right?" Jason said and chuckled.

"Yes" Kara nodded and smiled.

"Go to bed, baby girl. I love you" Mckenna told her and pointed to her room.

Kara turned and walked inside. Jason and Mckenna continued their journey to the bedroom to stripe from the wet clothes and take a shower.

"I am sorry I lifted my hand to your face" Mckenna murmured when she hugged him.

"It's gonna take me a few days to get over it and I just need a little bit of time but it wasn't my intention to make you worry. I am really sorry" Jason accepted that he was still angry.

"I love you, Jason"

"I love you more. And you are not competing with anyone, Mckenna. I love just you, Oma"

*

Mckenna entered the closet to pick out an outfit when her phone vibrated. She picked it up. It was a message from an unknown number.

(I know who killed the child that has been on the news for the past three days. Meet me tomorrow by 2pm. I will send the address to you as soon as I can)

Mckenna was surprised. She sent a text back.

(Why do you think I would be interested?)

A text appeared two minutes later.

(Because the murderer is a member of your family. The murderer is Jackson Donna)
