Chapter 98: Knocking on hell's door

Jackson didn't hit her, he had his words do it instead.

"What about your mother in law?"

"What about her?" Mckenna asked in a mellowed voice. 

She waited patiently for him to threaten her family and so she would lose her shit and hurt him badly but he didn't threaten Elixir.

"If you turn me in, Elixir's dream of becoming governor disappears into thin air. You will not just ruin me but your entire family too. Amazing and Max will resent you, Jason will lose a lot of contracts opportunities. Kara, would be the granddaughter of a murderer. Everyone who google your name will see that your father is a murderer, Mckenna. You will be ruined too"

Mckenna watched with renewed horror as her father walked out of her apartment leaving her behind to make the hardest decision of her life.

She sat on the sofa and she pulled her legs up and buried her face in between her thighs. 

She tried not to cry but it was inevitable. She shook with the vibration of a hopeless person. Now, she understood why it was called standing in between the devil and the deep blue sea.

She stood up from the sofa and she went inside to sit-in her soundproof bathroom. She examined all the aspects of her life for a while.

Even though she tried to convince herself that nothing was worth blowing up her family for, she always saw the face of the little boy flash repeatedly across her eyes and she will feel so guilty that she will start crying all over again.

Mckenna felt nauseous and she puked her guts out in the toilet. Who would blame her? Thinking about covering for a child's murder would make anyone sick in the stomach.

Mckenna stood up and went into the bedroom.

She had made her choice. She was going to turn the video over to the cops. It was the right thing to do except it didn't make her happy. She was quite miserable as she wiped her face.

When the doorbell rang, her first thought was that it was Jackson Donna and he was back to make her destroy the tape.

Mckenna hastened to open the door. She was determined to throw him out of her apartment and life. 

She couldn't believe that someone she shared blood with could be so ruthless and conniving.

When she opened the door, she froze.

It wasn't Jackson Donna.

"Mom! Elena! What are you doing here?"

She opened the door wider and her mother in law came inside with Elena, followed by five more people wheeling in several suitcases.

"Can someone tell me what is going on, please?" Mckenna asked.

This was a bad time to look at the face of the woman she was about to destroy her career.

"Sweetie, the wedding dresses are here and we are here to help you choose the perfect dress…. because you are my perfect girl. We've got princesses wedding dresses, designers, short and long. Oh Mckenna, you need to open them to see how beautiful they are and no matter the one you pick, I am optimistic that you will be the most beautiful bride anyone has ever seen"

Mckenna felt her breathing shake, and her lips even when tightly pressed together, trembled a bit.

Sorry mom!

She yearn to say as she lifted both hands into her face as she couldn't hold back the sobs again.

Sorry mom! Sorry I was cursed with a shitty father. Sorry, I am going to destroy your life. Mckenna had a million sentences going through her head, all of them an apology to the woman she called mother.

"Hey, sweetheart." Elixir touched her softly "it's alright to be overwhelmed" 

Elena watched her friend closely, she wasn't overwhelmed. She was sad about something else and she needed to get her alone in a room to make Mckenna tell her. Wait! Was it cold feet?

"MK, everyone gets cold feet before they walk down the aisle…" Elena started but Mckenna quickly interrupted her.

"It's not cold feet. Being married to Jason is about the only thing…it's the best decision of my life" Mckenna answered and sniffed back her snout. 

She turned and looked at Elixir. She tried to hold her gaze for a while.

"I love this family, mom…I really love being a part of your family and in the future, when I do something you would find difficult to believe, this is me apologizing in advance. Sorry Mom" Mckenna wiped her face severally.

"This is me accepting your apology in advance, I forgive you but don't do anything stupid. Now, wipe those tears and let's wear some fine ass wedding dresses!" Elixir said to Mckenna and she laughed genuinely for the first time.

Elena opened the suitcase and took out a couple of beautiful wedding gowns for Mckenna to pick. 

Mckenna started changing into the dresses one by one and somewhere along the way they turned it into a fashion show where Elixir and Elena would take pictures and Mckenna would pose for a couple of minutes.

Along the way even Mckenna forgot her sadness, and really started to enjoy herself even more.

It went on for a long time until Mckenna checked the time and it was around Kara's closing time in school.

"Oh my God! I totally forgot about Kara, I have to pick her up from school in about an hour, I have to get out of this wedding dress. It's so beautiful by the way" Mckenna complained as Elena came out of the kitchen carrying three glasses of lemon juice.

"Don't worry about it. I will make my son do it" Elixir said and picked up the phone to send a text to Jason.

"Jason has a very important conference meeting in forty five minutes. He can't pick up Kara" Mckenna reminded her.

"Well, then let's make Chike do it. He is obviously still playing that piano and he is terrible at it but I can't say that to him without being the unsupportive fiancee. I am going to call him right away" Elena said and looked at Mckenna for her approval.

"Yeah, sure…he is on the list of the approved family members allowed to pick up, baby girl. Thank you, Ellie"

Elena picked up her phone and dialed Chike's number. He picked up.

"Hey baby. Where are you? You said you were going to come watch me play" Chike's voice could be heard from the phone.

"I said that huh…oh well, I am with Mckenna and we need you to pick up your goddaughter from school" 

"Do I have to? The last time I was in a moving object with her, she electrocuted me! I have been meaning to ask, what do you think if I get the little rascal fireworks for her birthday. we can light it up and watch it go off together, what do you think?" Chike sounded excited.

"I will glue your hand to your ear if you get my daughter fireworks for birthday. So far, you've got her a hammer, a wood saw and knife shaped key holder…I don't know how to tell you that they are not child appropriate, Chike!" Mckenna said with widened eyes.

"So is that a no on the fireworks, just so we are clear?" Chike asked in a low voice.

"No!" Elixir, Mckenna and Elena yelled in unison.

"Fine, you guys are no fun at all. You win, I will go ahead and buy the Purple machete I originally wanted to buy for her. You can't tell me it's not child appropriate, it's purple people!" 

"No, Chike…" Mckenna spoke too late. The line was dead.

Elena rubbed her face and then she covered it completely.

"I can't believe I am in love with that idiot. I am going to have babies with him" Elena said and nodded like it was the craziest thing in the world.

"It's fine, Elena. We just won't let Chike around them without a supervisor tucked away in the shadows" Mckenna told her feigning seriousness.

Elena chuckled softly. It made sense.

"Come on, girls. We have more dresses to look at!" Elixir told them and everyone yelled in excitement.

Few minutes later as Mckenna tried the second to the final dress, she knew deep down that she had found her wedding dress. It was a beautiful long body fitted gown that made her look like a hot princess.

Everyone agreed with her.

"You are beautiful, sweetheart"

"Yes! This is the dress, Mk"

Mckenna smiled sheepishly when she heard a knock on the door.

Elena opened the door to find Jason outside. She refused to let him inside.

"Can I come inside?" Jason asked her.

"No. Mckenna is in her wedding dress and you can't see her. Go away, Jason" 

"But it's my house…" Jason didn't finish when Elena slammed the door shut.

"I will be on the roof!" Jason yelled and went away.

Mckenna was glad that Elena handled it like a pro, she would ask Jason what happened to his conference that he was home so early later.

Mckenna was about to take her dress off when the doorbell rang again.

Elena went to shoo Jason away again but it wasn't Jason.

"Mk, you have a visitor"

Mckenna hurried to the door to find a woman and a little girl standing there.

"I am sorry, who are you?" Mckenna asked them.

"Hey, my name is Tammy…."
