“Have you registered at the adventurer’s guild?” Nine asked Jennifer and Gabriel.

“Uh, already finished the G-rank quest,” Gabriel replied firmly.

“Done,” Jennifer said.

It was quite unusual to find myself as part of a group where Nine was surrounded by three females. Noel should have come together, though-- I thought I should at least allow Noel to do as he pleased today. He probably needed some rest too after the incident with that damn knight yesterday.

I should’ve killed him. A knight with that calibre doesn’t deserve to stand beside Her Highness. An absolute disgrace.

We arrived at the bustling guild. I made sure to surround us with a light degree of concealment as to not arouse too much suspicion.

Nine had long stopped wearing the gaudy black clothes of his and opted for lighter wear with shoulder armor, and a simple leather breastplate held together by straps.

“Should we pick this quest?” Nine pointed at one of the said quests details written on paper.

There were two different sections to the quest board. One tended to us, less experienced adventurers while the other displayed quests that suited those above C rank.

“Finding a locket won't be easy though..” Gabriel said after reviewing the contents.

Gabriel also wore a leather breastplate albeit one with a better in comparison to Nine.

The quest Nine chose was one that required us to seek out a lost item from another adventurer. The adventurer was of a noble class it seems. The locket was a precious object and during one of her excursions, she had lost it during a retreat.

It was a general quest, which meant there wasn’t a designated rank of appropriation.

“Can we really find it?” Jennifer looked at me with anticipation.

I nodded silently.

“Like, we’ll pick this quest and then pick a subjugation one. If we find the locket along the way then we’ll be earning extra,” Nine spoke.

“I thought you can only take one quest at a time?”

“There is no limit to the quests you can take up, you just have to get permission from the staff.”

“Oh,” Gabriel nodded.

As such, it was decided that we would attempt two quests, one was to find the missing locket, the other was to bring back two pairs of Kuffball eyeballs. Which is an egg shaped round creature that had fur all around it. It was a creature active during winter. Though, despite having roamed the forest for over a week, we had rarely come across this.

Nine tore the subjugation quest from the board, leaving the locket search quest because of its non-limited nature and proceeded to the quest counter.

“Excuse me Avice-san, can we form a party with us four today?”
“Hm? Oh, good morning. The four of you.. eh.. so you’re the one three-timing this time?”

“Just get to the point..” Nine said in a tired voice.

“Alright, so what quests did you pick?”

“The one about finding a locket and the Kuffball eyeballs.”
“The Kuffball? Are you sure? Those are fairly hard to find, and they usually stay around Tuffkans.”
“I can shoot from behind, so it should be alright,” said Jennifer.

“It’s a good challenge. Be careful. I’ll go process these..”

“Hey! We’re taking the locket search quest!” came the voice of a youthful adult male.

Turning around, it was a party leader that said that. He had a rare obvious wound that drew a line on his chin and bright blonde hair.

“Please queue up Bernnet-san.”
“I’m taking the quest, don’t let other people do it, please.”
Nine, and the others in the party didn’t say anything. Likewise, I stood there, observing.

“It’s not a party-limited quest. It’s alright if multiple parties take on this quest, so go queue in line.”
“Okay, got it.”

Avice then walked over to the board behind the counter to take notes in regards to the quest we would be handling.

“You guys should just leave this to us. Go fight the furballs and whatever,” said Bernnet.

“We might not find the locket, I took the quest just in case it happens.”

Bernnet replied with a frown.

“Okay, processing is done. Make sure to come back safe, next,” Avice said and we left for the west gate.

“Can they even find the locket? Sounds like it’s impossible. They’re no clues. It’s pure luck,” Gabriel said.

“It’s not impossible if you have Nine-san,” Jennifer replied in a proud voice.

“Nine-san? I thought he can’t even use magic?”

“I can’t use magic. But I’m getting better with the sword.”

“You mean that one? It’s a very nice sword, can I see it?” Gabriel asked.

“I should prepare my rifle too,” Jennifer said.

“I think we’ll stop a bit when we reach the edge of the forest there. Liliath, cover us okay?” Nine requested in an almost apologetic way.

“You don’t need to be so reserved. It’s my role to guide everyone to begin with,” I replied with a troubled smile of my own.

Nine wasn’t the only one who felt this way. I’ve come to find how my aid helped exercise their inferiority complex. Which was not something I liked. It was unfortunate what I could do to aid them in this regard was limited. Though, I’m sure Nine and Noel are able to turn this setback into strength soon enough.

I do worry about Noel’s mental health however.

He is after all, my one and only one.

We took a short stop at the point where the wintery forest meets the plains of snow. While Nine pulled out his sword to show Gabriel, who was versed in sword arts. Jennifer placed her light green school bag on the ground and pulled out a beautiful rifle. The school bag had been imbued with the property similar to a magic bag.

“...” Nine who saw that went stiff for a moment.

“Where did you get this? It-It’s so beautiful,” Gabriel asked with a slack expression. Her drool almost touched the balde.

“I got it from somewhere.. that’s all I can say,” Nine replied after returning his attention to Gabriel.

“I got this for my 12th birthday,” Jennifer, who thought Gabriel would also like to know the origin of her weapon said also, examining her weapon and charging the barrel with mana. Her eyes were sparkling.

A magic operated gun was something I have heard of, but this would be the first time seeing one in person.

“That I already know,” Gabriel said, brandishing Nine’s sword in the air a few times.

“Jennifer-chan, could I take a look at the gun?” I asked.

“Sure thing! Have you used a gun before?”

“No I have not.”

The gun had a beautiful silver luster. Similar to the sword Nine had, it reflected a bluish hue. The rifle itself was the length of my arm, and could be said to be on the short side.

“Do you mind if I tried shooting?”

“No problem.. what are you going to shoot at though?”

I pointed the rifle into the forest and aimed in between the gaps of the trees. I could feel the mana inside the chamber. I suppose I’ll fill it with some of my own. Depending on the type of mana that is inside, the output would differ..

Focused.. pulled the trigger. Just like in the FPS games I’ve played in the past.

A soft ring resounded, accompanied by the sound of the recoiling wind. The magic plasma shot forth and.. killed the target.

My opinion was that it was good for ranged assaults however.. It was also fairly weak.

Could technology be reducing the standard of magic? I’ve read those genres of novels before.

“Thank you,” I see..

“What did you shoot?”

“Something in the distance,” I said.

“Everyone done? Then let’s go hunt some Kuffballs,” Nine said enthusiastically.

“Let’s go!” Gabriel said as she pulled out her own sword.

“Are you going to tell Gabriel-san about it?” Jennifer came up to me and whispered.

It was odd how though Nine was the person Margrett entrusted to adventurer with, Jennifer herself seemed to trust me more.

“It depends on Nine. If it were me, I would not do so.”
“Okay, then I’ll be careful too.. you found the locket right?”

I nodded, “Unfortunately it’s at the refugee camp.”
