So, I’ve been thinking about it, and not including a “DEFENSE” and “AGILITY” stats in my story is stupid.

Two years ago, I wrote a grimdark litrpg that was completely ignored when I published it here, (sniff) and in that book, I knew that having a bunch of stats would only cause problems. So I simplified it all by limiting it into three categories: Vitality, Spirit, and Potential.

Vitality’s function was to cover all of the physical stats a character would have, including Strength, Defense, and Agility. If I wanted to emphasize that a character excelled at Agility, then their Vitality would be of Wind nature.

If they have immense strength, they would be of Vitality Fire nature. And lastly, the mighty defense would be called Vitality Earth.

BUT THIS ONLY COMPLICATES THINGS!

Why does Vitality have to be divided into three?! That directly contradicts my “simplifying things” approach. Besides, my target audience is already familiar with RPG games, right?

So from now on, I will stop my crap, and just use the standard Strength, Vitality (this will be the new defense. I really like this word), and Agility.

Spirit is pretty straightforward, is just the amount of mana a character can produce and use. So that remains the same.

  • Let me explain ranks:

The lowest tier is Bronze, which has 5 tiers.

E, D, C, B, A

From Bronze A, the next rank would be Silver E, and so on.

The tiers are Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. But I can’t picture a character having Diamond stats yet. That would be someone with the power to decimate entire continents.

Now, let’s update every character stats. Let’s start from the most powerful member of the Phantom Seekers, so you can compare the difference in their power more easily. Amelia would look like this:

AMELIA LAFLAMME

LEVEL

100

STRENGTH

BRONZE A

VITALITY

SILVER D

AGILITY

SILVER C ++

SPIRIT

GOLD B +++ ++

POTENTIAL

PLATINUM E

Now we can see that Amelia’s lowest stats is Strength. Although she could decapitate Alan with her own hand, she cannot lift a boulder or something like that. Her Vitality barely reaches Silver. Let’s also remember that she can power up by using her Legendary Gear. That’s what the “ + ” means.

When Amelia equipped her Devil Brat’s set, her Agility increased by two ranks, and her Spirit by 3. This last one, could be enhanced by 2 additional ranks when equipping her Feumori staff.

Which would look like this:

Agility: Silver C → Silver A

Spirit: Spirit Gold B → Platinum B

But when she uses her Stranded Hell Princess form, she looks like this:

STRANDED HELL PRINCESS

STRENGTH

GOLD E

VITALITY

GOLD B

AGILITY

GOLD E

SPIRIT

GOLD A

POTENTIAL

PLATINUM E

Strength, Vitality and Agility are enhanced, due to her Mana-constructed suit. Her Spirit lowers a bit, because she is using mana to maintain the Stranded form. Potential remains the same. More about that Stat in a bit.

Now, let’s compare Clara and Ashley’s power. If we add a numerical value to each of their stats, it would look like that. Have a look.

CLARA DOMINGUEZ

LEVEL

52

STRENGTH

BRONZE B - 4

VITALITY

BRONZE B - 4

AGILITY

BRONZE B - 4

SPIRIT

SILVER D - 7

POTENTIAL

SILVER E

* * *

ASHLEY YATES

LEVEL

41

STRENGTH

BRONZE B - 4

VITALITY

BRONZE A - 5

AGILITY

SILVER E - 6

SPIRIT

SILVER E - 5

POTENTIAL

SILVER C

We can see that Clara has 19 points, and Ashley 20. But why? Clara has a higher level, right? Shouldn’t she be way stronger than Ashley?

Well, here is what I want to emphasize: Levels don't necessarily mean more power.

Every time one of my characters levels up, they are not receiving 1 tier to boost any of their stats.

Skills and spells are learned by seeing them, practicing them or by creating new ones.

Stats are earned through effort. If a User is always carrying a 100 ton sword, their strength will be incremented.

According to Clara’s flashbacks, she retired from fighting, so her stats reflect that. In the case of Ashley, let’s remember that the original Ashley Yates fell into a coma, so although she was fighting and having adventures every day, her progress was halted for a time.

Now, the NPCs.

FABIO

LEVEL

28

STRENGTH

BRONZE A - 5

VITALITY

BRONZE A - 5

AGILITY

BRONZE A - 5

SPIRIT

BRONZE A - 5

POTENTIAL

SILVER E

Quite balanced. The only reason his speed surpassed Dylak’s, was due to his Passive Skill, Combat Battery.

ANASTASIA

LEVEL

26

STRENGTH

BRONZE A - 5

VITALITY

SILVER E - 6

AGILITY

BRONZE B - 4

SPIRIT

BRONZE C - 3

POTENTIAL

BRONZE A

She is the main reason why I wanted to distinguish Vitality from strength. Alan has been training Anastasia to be a Tank Class. So her Vitality is quite high compared to the others. Her Spirit Bronce C is quite low, which barely allows her to activate her Ice sword, but nothing else.

BELLA

LEVEL

25

STRENGTH

BRONZE C - 3

VITALITY

BRONZE C - 3

AGILITY

BRONZE A - 5

SPIRIT

SILVER E - 6

POTENTIAL

BRONZE B

On Volume 1, Bella helped Alan dodge by jumping while carrying him. This is impossible for someone with Strength C, but in that battle, she used the Overcharge Boost, increasing her stats.

Again, if we add a numerical value to their stats, we have the following results:

Fabio: 20

Anastasia: 18

Bella: 17

Fabio surpasses Clara’s 19. Why?

Well, NPCs are already strong from the start. It will take Alan a while to reach their overall power.

You may be thinking, why don’t Users use NPCs to fight on their behalf instead, then?

NPCs have a very slow growth, and Users are prideful. They want to become strong themselves.

ALAN WARDEN

STRENGTH

BRONZE C - 3

VITALITY

BRONCE C - 3

AGILITY

BRONCE C - 3

SPIRIT

BRONZE C - 3

POTENTIAL

SILVER D

And here it is. The weakest User in all the Novus. But trust me, if he keeps being thrown into adventures, his stats will soon surpass anyone from Unus Town.

And yet, it will take a while for him to reach the others.

So, let me say it again: Levels do not grant you stats each time, only experience, and access to more powerful passive and active skills, or this would turn into Dragon Ball Z in a short period of time. Trust me.

Some weapons, summons and artifacts can only be wielded if you have the required level.

So at the end, when everyone reaches level 100, the most powerful will be the better trained, and those with more rare gear.

Now, if you’ve paying attention, you’ll notice that I haven’t talked about Potential, and I don’t give it a numerical value as the others.

Let me explain what Potential is:

  • The capability of overcoming impossible odds.

Alan’s Potential reached Silver rank after defeating the Wereweasenox in Volume 1 thanks to his Puppet Master skill. Something that a regular low-leveler could never pull off.

So go ahead and check Amelia’s Potential.
