A young boy was running across a snowy plane, weaving through different kinds of snow-wreathed trees as he huffed. His sister, Nezuko, was not well, she was bleeding from her head, and… and she was turning into one of those- no; he needed to get her to some kind of doctor. Or she'd die… he'd be left alone. No. no. he couldn't let that happen. He wouldn't let that happen!

'How…?' Tanjirou Kamado couldn't help but think. 'How did this happen?'

"Don't die," He cried, trying to keep himself sane. "Don't die on me, Nezuko!"

"I'm gonna save you no matter what!"

"I won't let you die!"

"I swear your big brother will save you no matter what!"

- Flashback –

During the morning, the mountain was buried under the snow, frosty winds howling as Tanjirou took up a basket filled with charcoal on his back and prepared to leave the house. The snow was cold—like it should be—and Tanjirou had no choice but to tread down there to sell coal, and earn enough to keep his family running.

It was difficult.

So very difficult after his father passed away. But Tanjirou hadn't given up, neither had he ever complained nor will he ever do so. After all, he was happy with his life, with his family, with his little brothers and sisters, and with Nezuko.

"Tanjirou?" said Kie, his mother, coming out of the house. "Your face is covered in soot. Come over here." She wiped his face with a towel, gently. Tanjirou just let her do as she wished.

"It's dangerous with all this snow." She said, concerned. "You don't have to go, you know."

"Well," Tanjirou thought of his whole family; he couldn't not go. "I want everyone to eat their fill on New Year's, so I'm gonna sell as much charcoal as I can."

Kie couldn't help but crack a gentle smile, saying, "Thank you."

"Big bro!" shouted Shigeru, his brother, running up to Tanjirou along with his younger sister, Hanako. Another brother came behind them as well.

"Hmm?"

"You're going to town again today?" Shigeru asked, looking up at him.

From the side, Hanako, Tanjirou's little sister, said, "I'm going with you!"

"Oh no, you're not." Kie reprimanded. "You know you can't walk fast like Tanjirou."

"Mom!" Shigeru complained.

"You may not." Kie was stern in her standing, sound with such a tone that left no room for anything else. "Since he can't use the cart today, he won't be able to give you a ride when you're tired."

"Big bro!" Shigeru complained to Tanjirou as he ran up to him and clung to him like a koala.

"I wanna go with you! I promise I'll help you!" Hanako said, looking up at him with twinkly eyes.

Tanjirou just chuckled and patted her head.

"Thanks, Hanako. But you're staying home today." He said gently.

"What~?" Hanako complained.

"You too, Shigeru. But I'll get you tons of goodies, okay?" Tanjirou tried bribing, hoping it'd work. And he was a bit surprised that it did work. Actually, it wasn't really a surprise.

"Really?" Shigeru's eyes gleamed.

"Yeah," Tanjirou said, turning to Hanako. "And Hanako, I'll read for you when I'm back."

"Yeah!" Hanako cheered.

"That's a good girl." Tanjirou couldn't help but smile at her.

"Thank you so much, Tanjirou," Kie said, looking relieved.

"Sure," Tanjirou nodded, feeling a little dizzy for some reason, though the dizziness vanished as soon as it came. "Okay, I'll be heading now."

"Takeo," Tanjirou called out, walking up to Takeo, his other younger brother. "Will you chop as much wood as you can?"

"Sure, I'll do it, but… I was hoping we could do it together." Takeo sounded a bit grumpy.

Tanjirou just smiled and patted his head, "There, there." Though Takeo jumped away from his hand, swatting it away as he huffed.

"What's with that all of a sudden?!" Takeo shouted, blushing slightly.

"You're blushing, Take!" Shigeru teased from the side, giggling.

"Hey, you shut up!" Takeo yelled at him, glaring.

"There, there." Tanjirou continued patting his head, and his little brother jumped away, eliciting another chuckle from Tanjirou.

"I said cut it out!" Takeo glared, fuming.

The family laughed together, and Tanjirou set out for the town down the snow-wreathe mountain. His three siblings and mother watched him from afar.

"Hurry back, okay?" Shigeru shouted.

"Be safe, okay?" Hanako said.
