Chapter 1: 1

“It's 1:00am already?” I thought aloud while looking at the time on my laptop. I should go to sleep now before I convince myself to stay up longer to read this web novel again.

After turning off my laptop, I get ready for bed and set the alarm on my phone to 8:45am so I have enough energy to work later in the day. Right before laying down in bed, I make sure that everything around the house and in my room is how it should be, to prevent my mind from wandering and worrying while I’m trying to sleep. Finally done with my routine, I lay down in bed and allow my blanket to consume my soul while thinking about all the story ideas I think would be really cool if I wasn’t too scared to begin writing.

A few moments later I can feel myself drifting off to sleep and allowing the comfortable darkness to wash over me. Suddenly, I wake up from my slumber but cannot tell why after looking around my room and listening for any noises so I check my phone, see that it’s only 7:50, and decide to just go back to sleep. Once again, I feel the darkness slowly creeping up to allow me to return to my rest and right before I could get my final hour of sleep in, it happened.

A dog begins to bark non-stop outside. “It’ll probably stop in a few minutes” I say, trying to convince myself not to lose hope. I’ve overcome the many noises from the street outside that used to stop me from sleeping in the past. Am I really going to be stopped by a mere family pet? The answer was yes. The dog’s bark was simply too powerful for me to overcome. After what feels like an eternity later, the barking had completely ceased.

I close my eyes after finally being free from the dog’s attack. I start to drift back to the darkness that I had been deprived of for so long and start to feel better.
