Chapter 8: Chapter 8: With This, I’ll Become Stronger

     Reika opened her eyes, and she found herself in an unfamiliar place. What she saw before her eyes was a vast emptiness. There was no source of light in all directions, and no objects or people could be seen. When she was about to stand up, she felt extreme pain all around her body. She noticed that her body was glowing, and she saw cracks on her hands, arms, and body. After a while, the pain she felt before began to subside.

     Suddenly, a familiar voice echoed in her ears. She looked around, and found a glowing orb floating in front of her. The orb pulsated as it talked in front of Reika.

     The 「Contract」 should fully integrated into your soul in no time. I should do the final process by myself then...

     Reika shouted at the glowing orb while still trembling.

     W-who are you!?

     The orb pulsated and moved on Reika's right side.

     A dead mortal shan't know my name...

     What... are you going to do with my body? Where am I? Reika asked.

     The orb pulsated again.

     This is your subconscious space. And I'll seize your soul to restore my former glory. You should be honored to be my stepping stone... 

     The orb began to glow brighter and floated towards Reika. 

     Don't resist and just relax. And don't worry, I'll take care of your body. You may rest in peace, for eternity... 

     The orb was approaching her slowly. Reika couldn't dodge or escape from the orb's grasp because she had no strength to even lift a finger. The orb was about to touch her soul when suddenly, the orb began to vanish instantly into thin air.

     Reika was confused and looked around. The orb should have invaded her soul by now and taken over her body. But she didn't feel any discomfort or pain at all. She felt an extreme pain in her head after a while.

     Suddenly, a huge wave of information flashed into her eyes. Unfamiliar words appeared before her eyes, but she was somewhat able to understand the symbols. She comprehended these symbols one-by-one.

     「Contract」: Capable of taking control over souls by integrating them into the contractor's spirit. They could be ejected and returned at anytime once the contract has been set, but they are still tethered to the contractor's soul, and should obey their contractor's bidding.

     The contractor can use the abilities of the captured souls and could share the aeon that the contracted soul possesses. But these could only be applied when the captured soul was integrated into the contractor's soul. Once ejected, the contractor couldn't use the abilities or the aeon that the contracted soul possessed.

     Reika comprehended the next line.

     However, the contractor must withstand the spiritual pressure of the contracted souls while integrating, or these souls will seize the body and take total control of it. And once the main soul dies, all the contracted souls will die as well. 

     Reika was shocked by this information. This newfound power that the mysterious orb gave to her is a double-edged sword. At first, she was hesitant to accept this ability. It could give her strength, or it could bring harm to her soul and could lead to death. It was too risky, but she won't let go of this chance in order to become stronger. Reika finally accepted this information and closed her eyes.

     ...

     Reika opened her eyes, and she saw a humanoid figure on her left side. She couldn't talk or stand due to the extreme fatigue she felt.

     "You're awake." The mysterious figure told her.

     After a minute, Reika could move her lips and asked the mysterious person.

     "Is that you, Soru?"

     "Yes, it's me." Soru replied.

     Reika stood up while her legs were still shaking. She took a long time to stand due to the extreme fatigue she felt. After some time, she could stand on her two feet. She looked around and saw Soru standing beside her.

     "If you can walk properly now, then let's go back." Soru told her.

     Soru was about to return when suddenly, Reika held his shoulder.

     "Wait, I have something to do." Reika told him.

     Soru stopped in his tracks and turned towards Reika. He nodded.

     Reika walked away from Soru and closed her eyes. She inhaled a deep breath and exhaled. She suddenly opened her eyes.

     Her purple eyes glowed from the darkness, and she was mesmerized by what she saw before her.

     She could see all the things that the naked eye couldn't see. The flow of vitality from the trees around her, various glowing orbs floating around, which she believed were called "elementary spirits", based on the information she acquired at the time she received the ability. It was beautiful, like a painting, like an unending dream. 

     Reika tried to approach these elementary spirits by reaching out her hand, but they avoided Reika's right hand. Reika closed her eyes, and slowly, the elementary spirits began to approach her hand. They began to draw closer. After some time, it began to integrate into Reika's body.

     Reika felt better than before, as more elementary spirits began to integrate into her, one by one. Reika looked around, and she saw another strange, small orb floating around the area.

     It was different from the elementary spirits. Elementary spirits emanate a glowing ash-gray light, whereas these small orbs are glowing in pure white. Reika got curious about it, and tried to approach these orbs. 

     She tried to touch them, but they only permeated her body, instead of being absorbed. She was confused, but it means that these glowing white orbs can't be absorbed using her newfound ability. She was wondering why these tiny orbs couldn't be absorbed, but she dismissed that problem and ignored these glowing white orbs.

     Next, she goes near the tree. From the tree trunk, a green-like substance, which she believes is the vitality of the tree, flows from the roots, up to the tree trunk, and disperses to its branches and leaves.

     Reika turned around and was mesmerized by the hidden world she saw. She felt as if she was dreaming, and she felt a sense of tranquility. She looked around for another minute, and after she was satisfied with what she saw, she closed her eyes and opened again. Her glowing purple eyes vanished.

     She returned to where Soru was standing, with a smile on her face. Soru, wondering why Reika was smiling at him, asked her.

     "Did something happen?"

     Reika saw a dead log beside them and sat there. Soru followed her afterwards.

     "Well, I obtained something extremely useful. It's quite hard, but I think it was worth the risk... "

     "How did you obtain it?" Soru asked.

     Reika lifts her head up into the night sky.

     "Someone gave it to me. It was a talking, glowing orb of light. " Reika answered.

     "It was a weird orb of light. The orb told me that it would invade my soul and seize my body in the process. But somehow, right before it could enter my body, it began to vanish... I didn't know where it went to, but I was relieved that its plan for seizing my body hadn't happened. " 

     Soru stared at Reika's face while Reika was still watching the night sky above them. After a while, Reika lowered her head.

     "I know it was too risky, but it's my one-way ticket in order to become stronger... "

     Reika stood up and looked back at Soru. Reika smiled at him.

     The old man, along with Sylva and the guard, was about to reach the edge of the forest. The old man saw other village men ahead, sitting near the dragon's chopped corpse.

     One of the village men saw the old man approaching them, along with Sylva and the guard beside him. He informed the other village men. After a while, they all stood up and greeted the old man.

     "Where's the young lad?" The old man asked.

     "I guided him to the direction where the young woman had gone." The village man said.

     The old man widened his eyes and aggressively approached the village man.

     "Is he alone? Is someone of you accompanying him? "

     The village man was startled. He shook his head and explained to the old man.

     "I-I remember that the others told me that the guest couldn't understand our language. Accompanying and having a conversation with him would become hard. Besides, monsters are active during the night time... "

     The old man suddenly kicked the village men in the knee. The village man that he kicked was surprised. He twitched due to the pain he felt from the kick.

     "Active my ass, then why are you all sitting here like ducks? Aren't those monsters going to come and gobble this corpse up? What're you going to do? Till y'all die? You should've just followed the young lad, instead of cowering in fear here... "

     The village men fell silent. Sylva confronted the old man.

     "Old man, calm down. They're probably too afraid to enter the forest. Besides, they didn't bring weapons... "

     Sylva looked at the village men. The village men frantically nodded.

     "Aizzz~ You're right. Well, let's go find them. The forest is dangerous, and it'll be bad if something happens to them... "

     The villagers' men stood up and tidied up themselves. They were about to go after the old man when suddenly they felt uneasiness, and chills ran down their spines.

     The old man also noticed the uneasiness around him and asked the villagers.

     "Did you feel it?" The old man asked them.

     Sylva, who was also shocked and was trembling in fear, answered the old man.

     The guard looked around the area. But he didn't see anything. Suddenly, a gentle breeze passed. They got chills afterwards.

     The old man, still trembling on his knees, slowly walked towards the woods.

     "A-Anyways, let's go find those guests... F-Follow me... " The old man said.

     Sylva, the guard, and the village men quietly followed the old man to the forest, but the chilling sensation they felt before is still there. But they ignored this feeling and continued to walk.

     ...

     Soru and Reika were about to head back to the village when Reika felt a sudden discomfort in her chest. She trembled in fear and stopped in her tracks.

     Soru noticed Reika's unusual behavior and asked her.

     "What is it? "

     Reika slowly faced Soru while trembling.

     "C-can you feel it? This chill, as if it's like-"

     Reika hadn't finished her sentence when a gust of wind blew past them. She immediately closed her eyes and activated her ability. When she opened her eyes again, she looked above the sky, and couldn't believe what she saw. It was a spirit, but a familiar one. It resembles the dragon that died before, the Wildfire Dragon "Veylir".

     It hovered above the sky and was angry at them. This time, it has an ash-like translucent body instead of its maroon color. Reika noticed something unusual, as she found a glowing white orb inside its translucent body, similar to the small orbs she saw before that only permeated her body.

     "S-Soru, above you. C-Can you see it? " Reika asked, while pointing her finger up in the sky.

     Soru looked above the sky, but he didn't see anything.

     "I didn't see anything." Soru told her.

     Reika was trembling in fear while the dragon's spirit was still hovering above the sky. After some time, the dragon roared louder. Reika covered her ears while Soru couldn't understand why Reika covered her ears. He tried to imitate her actions.

     After the dragon's spirit roared, it immediately descended towards Soru and Reika. Soru, who is still covering his ears, couldn't see the dragon's spirit, and only Reika could see the hidden danger that awaits them. Without hesitation, Reika shoved Soru away from her and faced the dragon's spirit head-on.

     Soru wondered why Reika shoved him without notice, and he almost tripped. He uncovered his ear and looked back. He was about to ask why Reika shoved him, but he saw Reika standing still. He couldn't understand her actions and approached her. He looked at Reika's face, and saw her eyes all turned white.
