Chapter 68.1 – What Happened?
The Third Prince had only returned to the capital last night. He came back in the middle of the night, wading through the wind and snow. He also knew that his flight was disgraceful and the Emperor would inevitably hold him accountable, so he was very careful when he came back and did not disturb anyone else.
Plus, Qi Yang’s wedding yesterday distracted a lot of people’s attention, so the news was concealed for most of the day, and didn’t come out until this afternoon.
Qi Yang and Lu Qipei didn’t receive the news late, but the information they got was quite limited. They knew that the Third Prince fled back and had been summoned to the palace by the Emperor, but nothing else.
This made Qi Yang feel quite anxious, and her pretty brows frowned, “There’s no new war report coming from the northern border, I don’t know what the situation’s like now.” She stood up and told Lu Qipei, “No, I have to go to the palace.”
Lu Qipei knew that she was worried about the Crown Prince’s situation, and also understood their current position. She immediately stood up and said, “I’m coming with you.”
Qi Yang didn’t refuse her. After sending Zhi Ting to prepare the carriage, they returned to the inner room to change their clothes. Lu Qipei especially put an extra scarf on Qi Yang covering her whole neck, saying seriously, ”It’s windy outside. This will block it.”
Qi Yang looked at her faintly and didn’t refuse, and straightened Lu Qipei’s clothes for her.
This little action caused Lu Qipei’s heart to feel sweet inside, making her eyebrows curve. Before they went out, she held Qi Yang’s hand to comfort her, “It’s okay. Even if the war situation in the northern border changed, if something happened to the Crown Prince who’s in charge, there will definitely be some news. Now, only the Third Prince returned, and no other news came. The Crown Prince should be alright.”
Qi Yang nodded, and the two didn’t say much afterwards. Zhi Ting ordered the carriage to be prepared to set off to the palace.
In some aspects, a princess’s wedding was no different from an ordinary girl’s wedding. The first two days would be spent at the husband’s house, then on the third day she would take the Prince Consort back to the palace to show their gratitude to the Emperor. Based on the custom, the Emperor would also bestow them some gifts.
Right now, Qi Yang’s wedding had just finished. Originally, they should’ve waited two days before returning to the palace, but the Princess and her Prince Consort’s appearance didn’t seem surprising. In fact, it was not only Qi Yang. The other princes also rushed to the palace after hearing the news.
Compared to the Crown Prince and the Third Prince, the other princes didn’t have any advantage in the race for the throne. But they were all princes, and they all had their ambitions. So in these days when the other two were away, these brothers have also appeared one after the other.
Hearing of the sudden incident, everyone was surprised, but who could say if they had any other thoughts inside?
The Lu Mansion wasn’t too far from the Royal Palace. The carriage drove through the snow for half an hour and arrived at the palace gates, then entered as usual. When changing to the sedan chair, Qi Yang took a look around and found that the other princes’ carriage was already there as expected.
When they arrived at Xuanshi Hall, they saw the princes being blocked by Zhang Jiang outside the hall. “Your Highnesses, Your Majesty is busy with something and doesn’t have the time to meet with you right now. The weather outside is cold, it’s better if Your Highnesses return first.”

The Emperor had six adult sons. The Crown Prince was the eldest son, the Second Prince died young, while the Third to Seventh princes were all born to concubines. Other than the Third Prince who was able to compete with the Crown Prince in the court thanks to strength of his mother’s family, the rest of the brothers were suppressed by the two and could not cause a splash in the court. It was also because the two were absent lately that these princes had some voice in the court.
Right now, the four princes were being blocked outside of Xuanshi Hall. The leader, the Fourth Prince, was the first to speak. “I hear that Third Brother returned from the northern border. Us brothers don’t know what is going on there, so we rushed to the palace to see him.”
The Fifth Prince next to him immediately said, “That’s right, we just want to meet Third Brother. Supervisor1 Zhang, please don’t stop us. If Royal Father has not time to meet us, then we won’t bother him. We will just wait outside the hall for a bit.”
The group of people argued with Zhang Jian, while secretly probing the situation inside the hall. But who was Zhang Jian? How could someone who could serve beside the Emperor be so simple? He was much better at smooth talking compared to these princes. No matter what they asked, he managed to dance around it.
When Zhang Jian saw Qi Yang’s group of two coming from the snow, he left the princes and said, “Why is Your Highness coming to the palace today? His Majesty was still saying yesterday that the palace now feels empty after Your Highness left.”
The princes nearby secretly curled their lips when they heard that, looking at Qi Yang with displeasure.
Qi Yang ignored them and smiled at Zhang Jian, “I heard that Third Brother returned. I’m a bit worried about Royal Brother and the situation at the northern border, so I came to the palace to take a look.” As she said that, she looked at the closed door behind Zhang Jian, “I wonder how the situation is right now?”
The smile on Zhang Jian’s face remained the same as he replied, “His Majesty is talking to His Highness The Third. If Your Highness want to wait, you can go to the side hall.”
After saying this, Zhang Jian looked back at the other princes as if he was treating them the same. But these princes had been talking to him for such a long time and he wouldn’t stop being stubborn, yet when Qi Yang came, his attitude immediately became so soft it was suffocating.
Qi Yang didn’t bother with this and thanked Zhang Jian, then greeted the princes and led her Prince Consort to the side hall.
The two went first, and the others followed them angrily. Qi Yang then whispered to Lu Qipei, “What do you think they went to guard outside Xuanshi Hall so quickly for?”
Lu Qipei raised her eyebrows and whispered back, “They’re here to see the circus of the Third Prince’s downfall.” After a pause, she added in a lower voice, “Maybe they’re also hoping that something happened in the northern border, where the Crown Prince is.”
Qi Yang nodded, her face not looking very good. She didn’t even want to talk to the group behind her.
On the other hand, the princes following her could not help but look at her in disdain when they saw her whispering – the princesses of Liang were not allowed to participate in politics, and the war at the northern border had nothing to do with them.
So although news about the Third Prince caused such a stir today, all who came to the palace were the princes.
Just relying on the Emperor and the Crown Prince’s favor, Qi Yang occasionally got involved in political matters. Just where did she get her ambition from!?
