Chapter 69.1 – Jing town Had Not Fallen

At the end of October, snow fell lightly at the capital, looking gentle and beautiful at first glance.

At the end of October, the northern border was ravaged by wind and snow. No matter how thick your fur coat was, it was hard to resist the overwhelming cold. Such a weather where drops of water would freeze as soon as they fell was unimaginably harsh for the people from the south.

Someone exhaled a deep breath accompanied by a ‘phew’ sound, and the hot air immediately condensed into white fog in front of his eyes, almost completely blocking his vision. As he stepped out on the snow, half of his leg suddenly sank in, and he lost his balance and almost fell forward. Fortunately a companion next to him pulled him back, so he didn’t fall to the snow.

With fear lingering in his heart, he firmly steadied himself on one foot, then dipped his other foot down the snow, only to find a small slope in front of him. Unfortunately, it was covered by the heavy snow, and the whole place looked flat. The small slopes and pits were all hidden under the snow.

“There’s a slope ahead, be careful!” He spoke aloud to remind his companions behind him, then snapped off the tree branches in front of him and explored the way ahead.

The group of people stumbled their way forward. Each step in the snow was quite exhausting physically, and they had been walking like this for a whole day and night. Even these ironmen would be exhausted. Finally, someone couldn’t help but ask, “How much longer do we need to go?”

The leader took a breath and replied, “We’re going to check out Jing town. We’re walking too slowly; Ping town has fallen, and the nearest destination is Jing town.”

Most of the people in this group were not natives of the northern border. They were newcomers who had seen the map at most; they had no idea how far Jing town was. So after a walking few steps, someone asked again, “How far is Jing town?”

The northern border guy leading the group stopped to take a breath and looked back at the line of people. There were more than twenty people and only three horses. It wasn’t just the people that were exhausted after walking for a whole day and night, even the horses carrying people on their backs were panting in exhaustion.

He felt that it would be impossible to go on like this, but he couldn’t see a suitable place to rest. “We still have to go south for another day. If we can’t continue moving, then we need to find a place to rest first.”

No one talked back and they kept their head on the read, but they didn’t know whether the string in their heart was supposed to loosen or tighten.

The incident happened the night before. Huai town, which was located at the rear of the army, was originally peaceful and comfortable. The Crown Prince personally protected the city, and 30.000 troops were stationed there. The walls were high and the troops numerous – it could be said to be an impregnable town.

But the night before, someone opened the city’s gates, and three thousand soldiers silently entered the city…

Fighting, chaos, fire, wailing…

The Crown Prince personally went to battle, leading the Liang army against the foreign enemies, but how could he have known that betrayal was waiting for him? In the end, a team of royal guards desperately rescued him, but Huai town fell to the betrayal. They took the injured prince and went on the road of escape.

Ping town was originally the place nearest to them. It was the army’s logistics granary, and the Third Prince was in charge of it. But the fleeing group couldn’t have imagined that just after Huai town fell, Ping town fell even faster than Huai town!

They rushed to Ping town in vain, and even almost delivered themselves and the Crown Prince to the enemy’s door. Fortunately, there were also a few veterans from the northern border army who escaped with them. They realized something was wrong from a distance, so they escaped together.

There was no hope in Ping town, and getting to the next city would be very difficult amidst the ice and snow.

Finally, they found a sheltered slope at the foot of the mountain. A lot of people sat down exhausted on the ground, and they lost all their remaining strength once they relaxed. All the fatigue, sleepiness, cold and hunger came one after the other, almost crushing the young royal guards.

Most of the people had collapsed on the ground, with just a few people left guarding the three horses. Right now, they were helping the people on those horses down.

The three horses carried three people; unsurprisingly, one of them was the Crown Prince. His lips were pale, but his face was abnormally flushed. You could tell with a glance that he was suffering from a fever, an aftereffect from a wound that couldn’t be treated in time.

Although the Crown Prince’s was a little dazed from the fever, he was still awake as he was helped off the horse. He shook his head unresponsively when they asked his condition, “I’m fine.” Then he asked, “How are the two of them?”

Naturally, he was referring to the people on the other two horses. One of them was his attendant, and the other was his personal guard. The latter fought bravely for him and stopped the enemy, while the former blocked a deadly blow for him when he was ambushed. Both of them weren’t in a good condition; at the very least, their injuries were worse than the Crown Prince’s.

Someone had already checked their condition, and the reply came in an uneasy tone. “Both of them have fallen into a coma.”

The Crown Prince was relieved when he heard this – at least, they were still alive.
