“Shit, what are we going to do now?”
“How’s the foot? Can you run?” Harper asked.
“I can handle it, but where are we going to run? We’re surrounded,” I said, my eyes searching for a way out.
Harper looked around her, clasping my hand tightly with one hand. I could feel the tension in her trembling fingers.
“There!“ She pointed across the street with her finger. ”If I remember correctly, there was a fire escape there. If we can get there, we can escape,” she added.
When I looked where she was pointing, I could see that it was a narrow side street that connected to the main road. We only had one problem. There were more than a hundred zombies between us and the alley. It was a complete mystery if we could get past them.
“What are we going to do with the zombies? They’re blocking our way.”
“We have to find a way.” Then she shouted anxiously, “Watch out!”
Thanks to her warning, I noticed the zombie running towards us from the right side at the last moment. I grabbed my baseball bat, which I hadn’t let go of even for a moment, and pushed Harper backwards.
Grr*
The zombie, running towards us, instantly jumped towards me. With perfect timing, I dealt a solid blow to the head. The poor creature died before it could even make a sound, but the other zombies had heard of all the commotion.
I looked anxiously at the zombies, which were slowly turning towards us. “Harper, we’ve run out of time, it’s all or nothing,” and I started running. “Follow me!”
Despite the sharp pain in my leg, it never crossed my mind to stop. If I stopped, I would die, in the most painful way.
I shouted without looking back. “Just follow me, Harper. Don’t you dare fall!”
The last time I helped a woman who fell, I was screwed. I had no intention of reliving the same scene again.
“I’m with you, Victor!”
I could feel the unwavering confidence in her voice, even though I didn’t turn around. In the crowd full of zombies, there was no one we could trust but each other.
Grr*
Noticing our movements, zombies attacked us from all sides. Their intentions were obvious, to add us to their ranks, to create new soldiers.
“Fuck you, ugly bastards!” I shouted and hit the zombie on my left with the bat.
The blows didn’t have to be violent. It would have been enough if we broke their balance a little.
There were only 10 meters between us and the alley, but this was the toughest 10 meters in my life. Zombies were flocking to me, trying their best to tear me apart. And I was trying my hardest to get rid of them. I was swinging the bat in my hand, left and right, without stopping.
Hit the zombie on the left, then the one on the right, and kick the oncoming one to the ground. Fuck, my wound ached more and more every time I kicked it. We were approaching the alley, but my strength was nearing its end. Swinging the bat in my hand with the heavy bag on my back exhausted me, and the blood loss was causing my eyes to darken.
Huff*Huff*

“Harper, are you there?” I felt the need to ask. I wasn’t even sure the young woman was still behind me. All my focus was on the zombies in front of me.
“Yes!”
With the answer that came, I was relieved, even for a moment.
“After ... me!” Even talking had become torture. The fucking zombies didn’t stop.
When we got over all the zombies and reached the alley, I was beyond exhausted. I couldn’t even take a step, but we had succeeded. We got away from the zombies without dying.
Maybe I should have been happy that I succeeded, but I could not rejoice because of the sight in front of me. A group of zombies blocked our path. They were blocking the way to the fire escape. Behind me, the sight she saw also shocked Harper.
“What do we do now?” she asked anxiously.
When I turned my head back, I saw that all the zombies we got over were right behind us. They trapped us. We had nowhere left to run.
“Hold this!” I put my bat in Harper’s hand. “You will need this to save me!”
Not giving her a chance to speak, I started running towards the zombies in front of me, shouting with all my might.
My leg was begging me to rest now, but I couldn’t stop anymore. Because I had invested all the energy in my body in this last gamble. It was all or nothing.
“Take this, you bastards!” I jumped on a dozen zombies standing in front of me with all my strength.
I rolled like a ball among the zombies that fell to the ground with the force of the blow. With the force of the impact, my connection with my surroundings was severed, albeit for a short time. But one thing was certain in my mind; don’t get bitten by zombies!
The zombies were on the ground trying to pull me to them and bite me. And I was struggling like a turtle not to be fed to them. My strength was running out. The weight of the bag on my back made my movements heavy. I couldn’t even stand up.
Where the hell is Harper? Or did she leave me? Shit, I didn’t think of that.
While I was sinking into the swamp of negative thoughts, I noticed a zombie suddenly jumped on me. Shit, I was distracted. The zombie was on top of me, preparing to bite my arm, and I didn’t have the strength to resist. It was certain now the end had come.
With a last effort, I shouted. “Where the fuck are you? Fucking Harper!”
Bam*
A blow knocked the ugly creature on top of me.
When I looked in the attack's direction, Harper, my savior angel, was there. But there was no trace of her usual warm smile on her face. Instead, she looked at me with a frown and said;
“Did you call me fucking Harper?”
