The packed afternoon session after an exciting class can be considered almost criminal. Ebina-sensei was going over topics that would be making an appearance, and I couldn’t stop myself from zoning in and out of focus.

I wouldn’t call it boring per se, but I almost fell asleep on myself numerous times so that’s a bit contradictory on my part. I wonder how Ebina-sensei feels knowing that students fall asleep because of her. I doubt she would actually care, she has the as long as I get paid I can’t be bothered type of energy going on right now.

As if I am in a tame version of hell minus the fire and brimstone, I occasionally get poked with a blue ballpoint pen by my next door tormentor in Tachibana; this is her "attempt" to keep me awake in class for whatever reason.

Poke

I gave zero response to the poking sensation. A few seconds later,

Poke

This female is relentless, and I don’t think she will cease this unwarranted harassment.

"If you continue sleeping, I will be forced to switch to a sharper object."

Should I take a gamble on this?

I think not.

Images of knives, compass needles, pencils points which have been freshly sharpened and the dreaded fountain ink pen she usually writes with all flashed before my eyes as I glossed over every possible object at her disposal. So due to the fear of not knowing what item she could be alluding to, I immediately raised my head.

"You’re asking for something very difficult right now Tachibana-san.”

I complained, half asleep with my eyes barely open.

In my past school I am considered an active sleeper so here shouldn’t be any different.

Ebina-sensei silently crept up towards my desk while rolling up a notebook, then smacked me on the head with it.

Due to that surprise attack, I was jolted awake and almost fell out of my seat.

“Gyahhh-!”

Some of my classmates laughed at my reaction. Well, I may have to assume the role of class clown now. Look at me switching school social careers right in the middle of the term, almost like a university student who runs into that one class and decides that their choice of degree isn't worth it anymore.

There was no need for that; a simple scolding by sensei would have been more effective.

"Is my lesson that boring to you Kaneko? Would you like to come up to the board and spice things up for everyone in attendance?”

Slowly rubbing my eyes, I replied “There will be no need for that Ebina-sensei; I will pay extra close attention in class now.”

Still why am I the one being singled out when others are doing the same or way worse? Don’t tell me that she used me as the sacrificial lamb.

Tachibana slowly shook her head at me with a look on her face. The look was telling me, "I told you so."

Since I have yet to completely learn my lesson, I placed my head on the desk once more, deciding to ignore everything that just happened.

"Sleep at home," said Ebina-sensei, again hitting me with the notebook this time aiming it on my forehead.

Smack.

Looking up at her with puppy dog eyes, I replied, "Ok, that one actually hurt.”

“That is the entire point so try to avoid getting another one.”

Hmph, you never learn do you Kaneko-kun. Growing up were you the child who had to be told everything trice?” scolded Tachibana.

“Actually I was a very well behaved boy. I don’t mean to brag at all but Santa never once brought me coal during the Christmas holidays.”

Also I did sleep at home, but thinking back on it, I’m still drained from this morning class. So that factor, mixed with a lullaby that is called a topic breakdown, is calling for me to take a power nap right here and right now.

Tachibana turned her attention back to the whiteboard, "Once again, you should pay attention because this may come up in the future exam."

Oh yes, the looming exam is near, but these extra topics just feel like unnecessary work.

After all, death by karoshi is a serious thing, you know.

I slowly raised my head, then reclined in my seat and exhaled.

Ebina-sensei walked forward to the front of the class once again, then placed the notebook she smacked me with moments ago on the teacher's desk.

Taking her seat, she picks up her coffee mug while we continue to take down the notes.

From time to time, I would observe the class, and not everyone was paying attention once again so my sacrifice was in vain after all.

Hisoka is passed out on the desk while using several notebooks as pillows.

Some female students were making after-school plans and texting in class while other people were watching videos or playing video games.

This is typical teen behavior, right? I don’t think they will be paying attention unless something interesting happens.

Eventually, a new email is sent to our smart watches, much to everyone’s surprise.

Tapping on the icon, the contents of the E-message popped open.

As I read the rules once again, I noted that this may promote a feeling of distrust in the classroom, seeing that any one of us could attempt to guess and potentially expel one of our very own, if that 200 lifeline points is more than they have.

Roughly around five minutes elapsed before another email came in.

  • Saikyō Polytechnic Institute: You are not the selected student, so happy hunting if you so wish to.

Everyone began to eye each other with great apprehension as a moment of silence blanketed the classroom.

I attempted to have a peep at Tachibana’s email, but she immediately exited the application. So there goes that potential discovery.

As I continued copying the notes from the whiteboard, she turned towards me and focused her line of sight on the arm with my smart watch.

"No. I am not the selected student, Tachibana-san." I immediately answered.

"Predicting my thoughts, are we now Kaneko-kun?"

"It’s the only reason why you would turn to me after an email like that is received."

Ebina-sensei stirred the contents of her cup with a spoon and said, "You have now received the notification from the school. Your examination will take place in 6 days; however, starting right now, attempting to expose the marked student is permitted.”

Mikhailov, who sat quietly the entire time, began to look at each of our faces one by one, and I was unsure about what expression he was making under those shades.

Even without saying a word, I can tell he is debating whether to hunt for the marked student or not.

Without another moment’s notice, Imoto stood up and addressed the entire class, "Hey guys, I would really appreciate if you stayed back after class so we could discuss this new update."

Hisoka, who seemed to be in an agitated mood, just turned his face away from him. His two friends in Matsukura and Takanawa looked confused about what to do,.

Ideally, Imoto is who Matsukura pictures himself to be when he talks about girls, but we both know that’s the furthest thing from the truth.

"I would like us to discuss this before any rash actions are taken in regards to this miscellaneous event."

Still, people are thrilled at the idea of moving up and gaining extra lifeline points; after all, that may come in handy one day if we ever get a penalty that results in the loss of some points.

Imoto let out an annoyed sigh as he continued to attempt to take control of the situation.

Fukami stood up as well and urged others to attend the important meeting; eventually, people started to listen.

There she goes again, being the unrecognized vice leader. I am glad someone like her is in the class.

Without Fukami backing up Imoto, I don’t think he would have fully controlled the situation.

As I reflect on it more, the school is actively encouraging us to potentially backstab one another for individual success. I am not surprised by this turnout, but I wonder if any of us will bite at the chance of moving up a few ranks.

There should be a couple; after all, it’s in our human nature to be selfish. So I won’t fault them, nor will I judge them.
