“Matsukura and Takanawa, let’s hurry before the lines get too long!” was exclaimed by Hisoka from desk as all three of them rushed out of the classroom to secure an early place in whatever line they are speaking about.

Those two would be the only students I see Hisoka interacting with so it’s safe to assume that they are friends.

Everyone is off doing their own thing and I am the cheese who stands alone, quite understandable, seeing that I am the new student who hasn’t found a place yet in the classroom.

Tachibana stood up from her seat as I turned towards her and asked, "Do you want to get lunch together?"

She continued doing her own thing for a few moments before answering me, "That sounds very much like a hassle Kaneko-kun. Don’t tell me that you’re someone who likes to be a bother?”

"What made you arrive at that conclusion Tachibana-san? I just asked something, a simply yes or no would suffice.”

"It’s obvious that you’re attempting to use me as a tour guide seeing that you most likely haven’t familiarized yourself with your surroundings, or worst yet you’re under the supposition that we’re friends.”

She saw right through my shoddy attempt, which was very disappointing. However that’s not the main objective.

"Your ability to perceive my true intentions is notable, so now that the cat is out of the bag will you accompany me?”

Curling one of her silver locks around her index finger, Tachibana answered. "The school’s smart watch has a campus map along with navigation, so my help isn’t required."

Well, there goes my final attempt at socializing before I close myself off.

I looked at the watch. "It’s a factual statement, but I am still unaware of many things regarding this school. So I would like concise information on how things are done here, after all, if I don’t get it. I may turn out like those special students."

She paused before exhaling deeply, placing both hands on her slim waist.

"I will only walk with you towards the cafeteria, and that’s it. I’m only doing this to avoid you becoming someone I can’t stand.”

That’s a small victory and it’s nice to know that she can tolerate me; I was under the impression that she seemingly disliked me for no reason other than existing.

"That sounds reasonable enough."

I could feel the numerous glances from some of our classmates as we spoke, almost as if I am breaking some sacred rule.

We both exited the classroom and walked side by side with at least 9 inches of space between us. I believe this is her way of ensuring that we don’t look like a couple.

That is a bit hurtful considering that I find her attractive and Tachibana may be one of the prettiest girls I have meet so far.

"I will only tell you this once, so listen very attentively, Kaneko-kun."

A nod was issued by me as she looked at her smart watch.

"This school’s environment can be described as an educational dystopia; there are constant silent wars happening between individuals and classrooms. So I will start with the ranking system. Every student in a given year group is ranked from 1st to 120th, depending on how many other students are left.

What typically defines a student’s rank would be one of three things: your class rank, your scores during school-issued examinations, and personal wagers. I will begin with class rank. As you are already aware, our class is 350 points behind C-Class. An example would be our D-Class creeping pass C-Class; if that occurs we would become the new C-Class and that is process called an Overhaul.

There are only three ways to overhaul another class: by gaining class points via personal wagers, performing well in examinations, and winning interclass miscellaneous events. In personal wagers, a student may challenge another student for their rank in games as simple as flipping a coin. The downside of this is that if you manage to lose, you will fall to the bottom of the rank list and your class will suffer a 50-point deduction which will go to the winning student’s class. (That’s if you choose the class penalty option). Your lifeline point total will also suffer a deduction as well

Your lifeline point total is increased by writing exams, winning a wager against another student, and how your class performs in miscellaneous inter-class events. (Please note that if your lifeline total reaches zero, you will be expelled from the school.)

Scores on examinations not only add to your lifeline point total; they are also used by the system to rank you accordingly. Since two students in the same year group sharing the same rank is impossible, even a measly.1 mark more on an examination will tip the scales between rank 1 and 2.

Lastly, inter-class miscellaneous events are where all classes in a year group compete against each other. Besides class points being allotted, ranks are also changed accordingly. 1st place (every student in that class moves up 4 ranks), 2nd place (every student in that class moves up 3 ranks), 3rd place (every student in that class moves up 2 ranks), and 4th place (every student in that class moves up 1 rank).

Even with that constant flurry of changes, the top 10 of each year group rarely ever get knocked out of the tier."

Well, this is a bit too much to take in right now.

I scratched my chin with my right index finger and asked, "Is there any benefit to attaining Class-A or even top ten?"

Tachibana tittered then replied, "A-Class and the top 10 get perks such as a monthly stipend (in the form of digital currency), the cream of the crop for most students would be the high class dorm rooms, contact with the outside world, along with other things.”

"What do you mean by high class dorm rooms?"

"On the east side of the campus, there are four dorm buildings, one for each year group, and the fourth one is reserved for the A-Class of each year group along with the respective top 10s."

"Is that all?"

"Not quite, but that being said the students who either graduate from A-Class or the top 10 get their academic dreams fulfilled."

Academic dreams fulfilled? That sounds like the school is trying to sell me snake oil in the form of them telling me that anything I want academic wise will be gained.

"The one thing that intrigues me would be the top 10 issue. Theoretically, even a student in our class who holds onto that rank at graduation will get the same thing reward as the top class. So in hindsight, students don’t have to work with other students in order to succeed here.”

Tachibana twisted her lips to the side while replying, "That’s very much correct. All a student has to do is beat another student in the top 10 of our year group, and they will gain that rank. After that, the only thing left to do is selfishly preserve it."

This school system is a bit fascinating, seeing that there are multiple routes to the finish line.

As we approached the cafeteria, she continued, "Avoid getting suckered into a personal wager. There is a student here gathering lifeline points while steadily increasing their class’s points, all in the form of challenging students to a game of coin flipping."

"Something simple like that can be dangerous if in the hands of the right person."

"Exactly so, and our class placed a ban on any of our students taking on personal wagers without approval."

"How was that motion passed by the entire class when clearly the presence of a leadership figure is missing?"

Tachibana sighed, "They all agreed upon a student named Imoto Shiba as leader."

"I don’t think I have met him yet."

Tachibana pointed to the left of me with her eyes, and I saw a handsome, average-height male standing up. He looked as if he already had 10 girlfriends on the very first day of school, and the supporting evidence would be a small group of girls basically surrounding him.

"That’s Imoto Shiba; personally, I can’t stand him, but the other girls seem to think he is dreamy."

"So I will take it as you disliking otokomae."

She kept quiet as I directed my attention somewhere else for a few moments.

Eventually that same attention was brought back as I felt pressure on my left shoe. While looking down, I saw a 3.5-sized black flat dress shoe stepping on it. Following surprisingly thick thighs which were being hugged by white thigh highs which are connected to Tachibana.

"Is there any reason why you’re stepping on me?" I asked while biting my lips due to the pain.

"Don’t you guys like this sort of treatment?"

Where is she getting this type of information from? It has to be the internet or word of mouth.

"Some of us do, but sadly, I am not part of that bracket."

With a satisfied look on her pretty face, Tachibana replied, "Good now that I have your attention once again. I just want to tell you that I will be leaving now.”

She left before gratitude could be shown for the given information. Hopefully she doesn’t think I am ungrateful.
