Ten minutes after I had talked to Zihao, not much really happened. Lai continued coloring in her little coloring book she took everywhere. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her without that coloring book now that I think about it. There was that one time when we saw each other in the store and she didn’t have it, but every other time she seems to always have it somewhere near her. I tried conversing with her about it, but she wouldn’t answer back unless if it was a yes or no question.

I learned a few things about her by asking basic questions. The first thing I asked was if she had any other things she did outside of coloring. She said she did, but when I interrogated further, she wouldn’t answer. I asked if she ever smiled before since she’s always frowning, and she said that she had before. Once again, she wouldn’t elaborate on why.

In some ways, she reminds me a bit of me. When I was her age, I never really smiled. There was nothing to smile about. Living in the world’s dumping ground for all of humanity’s greed and perversions really affects one’s worldview. Especially if they’re a child. Lai may not be happy right now, but at the very least, she didn’t have to go through what I went through.

Another ten minutes passed and someone entered the store. Upon entering, Miranda greeted them as they looked around the store. Lai took her coloring book, closed it and carried it under her arm to the backroom. Her father was also in the room looking up something on Miranda’s laptop. He said he was ordering stuff for his bar since they needed new shipments. To quote him: Just because we may have a stalker, that isn’t an excuse to shut down business.

Meanwhile, I’m getting antsier and antsier that there still hasn’t been any news on Ty’s location. My body fidgeted more and more from the combination of the incoming maximum horny and my concern for Ty’s safety. Miranda noticed it right away, but instead of asking what was wrong like last time, she just kept watch on me. Why did Karina have to be rich? It may be what’s helping me, but it also dragged me into an even deeper hole.

The first customer left with a figurine of a blue-haired girl with pigtails. The figure had a distinct lack of clothing, wearing only a bikini. She clasped a microphone in her hands and she took up a pose that gave a faint air of celebrity status and ego. It’s alive in its own weird way.

While Miranda kept her eyes on me, Zihao left the backroom and stood in between us. He yawned before leaning his weight against the counter as he looked out the window.

“I’m leaving at noon, Miranda.” Zihao said.

“Opening your bar today?”

“It’s the only way I can make a decent living.”

“It doesn’t seem to be enough.” I put my two-sense in their conversation.

“What else can I do? I’m not good at anything except cooking.” He looked at the gem on his wrist. “I opened that bar hoping that someday I can get enough money to open a restaurant in the big city. Now look at it. The only people that go there are washed up drunks and those guys that come once a week before they disappear to their little party.”

“They’re pretty fun parties.” Miranda said.

The store turned quiet again, but it didn’t last long. The squeal of turning tires pierced my sensitive ears and I cringed from the noise. I covered my ears as I saw Karina’s car shoot into the parking lot way above the speed limit.

“What the fuck does she think she’s doing?” Miranda shouts. “Is she drunk?” She turned to me with an accusatory gaze.

“No, she isn’t drunk. She wasn’t even at the house when I woke up.”

Miranda’s face wasn’t anywhere close to pacified. She had that look that put me on edge anytime I believe someone’s about to start something. Before anything like that could happen, Harvey circled around the store and rushed to the front door. I sprung into action, meeting him at the door.

“Did you find something?” I ask.

“I found more than something. I figured out where he is.” Harvey held up a sheet of paper with an address scrawled on the sheet. “It took me a while to pinpoint where he is. I owe favors to some people now, but you have to find them.”

“You found Ty?” Miranda asked from the counter.

“Yeah, and Karina’s in danger.” Harvey said, thrusting the sheet into my hand. Hearing what Harvey said, Miranda thrust herself into the fold. “I wondered why that disc wasn’t in the case. She probably did that on purpose to get our attention, just in case she didn’t return.”

I looked at the address and memorized it word for word. “This is where they’re at? You sure?” I ask.

Harvey nodded while Miranda took the address from my hand. “From car it’ll be a thirty-minute drive. But you don’t have to worry about that.” Harvey glared at me with daring eyes.

“I’ve never been to that part of the city.” I said.

“It’s just west of here. Look for signs and pray you get there in time. Karina and Ty’s lives are in danger.”

“Okay, what the fuck did I miss these past few days?” Zihao speaks up.

I clutched the sheet in my hand. This is where Ty is, and this is where I can find the person who took him. Not only that, but from what Harvey said, it seems even Karina’s in danger. What brought us to this moment? It doesn’t matter. What matters now is what I’m going to do once I get there.

My tail exited its tight cage and the collective gasps from Miranda and Zihao went unheard. I did hear them, it’s just more like I didn’t care. If I stay here any longer than I need to, then Ty could end up in an even worse situation.

I burst out the door at speeds humans could only dream running. My eyes were so powerful that even though everything vanished into a blur, I could see and make out everything I went past. A small kid holding their mother’s hand. As I run past them, the wind picks up out of nowhere, but they didn’t expect I made that happen. I was too fast for them to even comprehend.

Wait for me, Ty. With this speed, I’ll reach you. With these eyes, I can find you. And with these hands, I can free you.

Several minutes went by so slowly that time seemed to have stopped completely. We waited the five minutes in agonizing torture and anxiety. We prayed that someone, anyone, would show up in that time, but no one came. The beatings resumed, and Tiffany held back nothing.

Broken, beaten, and bleeding from all over, Karina looked almost unidentifiable. Several points of her face were cut and swollen. She stopped crying and screaming a long time ago, so I kept up that slack. I raged with the fury of gods and my throat punished me for it. Once the thirty-minute mark passed, my voice began to wane, but I kept up the onslaught of words.

Tiffany punched Karina across her face, and another tooth flew out of her mouth. That made three teeth gone in the span of thirty or so minutes. She grabbed her captive’s hair and held her head up so they could make eye contact. When Tiffany saw the state she was in, she laughed.

“You finally passed out? After half an hour?” Tiffany said. “I stayed conscious for just over an hour, and you can barely last half that.”

“You fucking disgusting pig fucking bitch.” I squeeze out through my flame filled throat. “Just stop it. We’re tired of your bullshit.”

For the first time since she began, she turned toward me. Her glare shut me up for the first time since I began screaming my lungs out. I don’t even think I can speak slightly high after this with how badly my throat is scratching at me.

“Will you shut up?” Tiffany said in that third voice she keeps hidden. “I don’t want to hear your bullshit anymore.” She sighed before turning back to Karina. “Do you want to know something about this world?”

I already knew this wasn’t a question I was meant to answer. However, if I could say anything, it’s that it’s better to be ignorant about the complexities while knowledgeable about there being something wrong. Better yet, be ignorant all the way and live life the best way that we can think of. Whether it be making people smile, helping your brethren, or feeling good about oneself, all those would be a lot better if we could just ignore the world around us.

“Here’s the truth that everyone knows but doesn’t like to say out loud. The universe isn’t at fault for the atrocities committed in it. We are. The universe is just a catalyst for our terrible actions. To survive, we had to make rules, and we had to make those rules to benefit us over the other. Why do you think every government that comes into being turns out to be corrupt? When someone has power, they’ll do everything within that power to undermine everything beneath them so they can keep their thrones. Even systems that claim to be made by the people will eventually rise so high that clouds obstruct their view.

“Then the ones below them fall in line and question nothing around them. Or, worst yet, they’ll try to play the game and rise above everyone else. Then, when they eventually face trouble, or they play the game for so long, but falter at the end, they say the world’s to blame. When things go wrong, they say that the world is cruel, and then they don’t do anything about it.

“We’re all blind. You, Karina, and even myself. Instead of seeing the truth, we shoot past the truth in order to come up with excuses that’ll somehow relieve us of responsibility. Whether it be money, deniability, or ignorance, we will find a way to swiftly avoid justice. Humanity created the world, and we’re blaming the universe for existing.”

A moan escaped Karina’s lips. Tiffany, Jessica, and I looked at her, surprised to find her still kicking after such a long beating. Jessica hadn’t said anything since it all began, and she looked away from the torture. But with hope still about, she called for Karina.

“Karina, stay with us. When we get out of here, you’re going to be alright.” Jessica looked up at Tiffany, who was now looking at her. They stared at each other with Tiffany’s emotionless gaze and Jessica’s saddened face. “Tiffany, I know what you went through. Karina told me everything about what she did to you. I do think she deserves time for her actions,” Jessica looked at Karina, but she couldn’t stare for long. “But this isn’t how things will be solved. You’re not helping anything right now. If I get out of here, even if you don’t deserve it, and even though you need some extensive help, I don’t think I can keep you away from a needle.”

Tiffany looked at Jessica as she pleaded for her to cease her tirade. Desperation clawed at both of their throats, both calling for help. One of their eyes falter, and Jessica looks on in awe as Karina raised her gun, the barrel pointed at the ceiling.

“Humanity is cruel. I’ve been betrayed by four people that I gave my trust to. The first time, I was hurt, but I felt like I could still push on. The second destroyed me, turning my life into a living nightmare. The third completely broke my sanity.” Her eyes shifted over to me. “And the fourth brought acceptance within me. There is nothing left to trust in this world. I won’t be fooled again.”

She took a deep breath and pointed the gun at Karina’s skull. Her finger on the trigger, she looked down at Karina, not out of anger, but of sadness. Karina moaned once again, blood trickling from the corner of her lips. I wanted to shout, but my voice refused to exit. It lingered at the back of my throat, tired of my constant hatred. Jessica looked away, preparing for a blast and spray.

“This’ll be the final decision I’ll ever make. I won’t let others control me any longer. Once you three leave the game, I’ll follow after you. Sometimes, it’s just better to stop playing.”

I closed my eyes, expecting the same event to occur that Jessica envisioned. When I closed my eyes, my hearing only became better. I became so great at hearing, in fact, that when I heard a door slam open upstairs, it sounded like it happened down here.

I open my eyes, and what do I find except the impossible. It happened so quickly that even though my eyes were closed for barely five seconds, everything changed within those few moments.

Hanging above the floor, Tiffany clawed at the person holding her in the air. However, her nails couldn’t pierce the tough skin of the succubi’s body. I couldn’t see her face, but I don’t think I’d want to. My imagination filled in all the blanks that I needed to know. Harmony’s here, and she’s busy killing our captor.

Tiffany’s face turned to a violet as Harmony squeezed her neck. Blood dripped from her mouth, and every time I looked down her throat, I could see a pool of blood rising. Harmony tightened her grip, and blood began leaking from Tiffany’s eyes. After another squeeze, her neck snapped, and her arms grew limp. She no longer clawed at Harmony. She no longer kicked for freedom. She no longer had to play the game.

Harmony killed Tiffany right in front of us.
