Chapter 1: 1 : Dragged Feet

    A young man drags his feet through a bustling cobblestoned street. He passes by store fronts and hawkers. His mouth agape and his vision unfocused. Bystanders stare for a moment before ignoring him. The young man finds the ledge of a large water fountain to sit on. He watches the people go about their seemingly ordinary lives. He remains on the ledge even as the crowd thins and the sky darkens. Soft moonlight filters through the cloudy night sky. The calm trickle of water from the fountain echoes across the lonesome market, the young man still fixed in place.

 

    Sun rays shine across the market, as people begin setting up their stalls for the day. The young man's vision is blocked by a young woman who waves her hand in his face. “Hello?” she says. “Have you been here all night?” She asks with an inspecting look. The young man doesn’t react. “Hello, what is your name?” She tries again. He blinks and pauses,

    “My name?... My name is Max” he croaks. 

    “Nice to meet you Max, my name is Lynn” She smiles, “Are you OK?”

    “Yes, I’m fine” He clears his throat, “Where am I?”

    “This is Northwood… are you sure you are OK?” Lynn raises her eyebrow.

    “I’m sure” Max’s face pales and he nods slowly.

    “Okay well” Lynn makes a complicated expression, ”Make sure to take care of yourself Max, I have to get going” She says while walking off. 

 

    Max fiddles with the hem of his shirt while analyzing his situation, he seemingly has entered into a web novel he just finished reading. Lynn is a character from the novel who helps the main character in the exposition. Not too dissimilar to Max’s meeting with her just now. After Max’s swift death he got the whole multitude of cliches, meeting a Goddess, getting his system, then reincarnation. Armed with a system and knowledge of the future he will reach greatness. His grandiose thoughts suddenly interrupted by his growling stomach. With a new found resolve (and a slight blush) Max struts to the bakery shop across from him.
