After shooting his cousin a bright smile, Ari placed his jar on the silver scale. Having won 112 fish, he was eager to find out what skills he could receive. However, despite his vast imagination, nothing he envisioned could compare to the skills that showed up on the transparent screen in front of him.
It was shocking to see how many wonderful skills there were on the prize list, and surprisingly, most of them were offensive ones. Considering that most of the skills he saw during Ji-Hye’s turn were defensive or neutral, this left him puzzled. He had thought that it would be the same for him.
So it caught him off guard to see the screen filled with tons of offensive skills, and judging from Ji-Hye’s expression, she was, too. Just looking at all of them made Ari regret he wasn’t able to catch more fish.
“Wow, Ari!” Ji-Hye exclaimed as she scanned through the skills. “I didn’t know there were so many unclassified fighting skills in Oasis.”
“Neither did I,” he replied, his eyes widening as he stared at all the skills.
In his previous life, he never really researched how many unclassified skills there were, so this was shocking to see. It wasn’t as though he wasn’t aware of them. He had a couple of them himself back when he worked for a gatherer for that Black company.
So even though he knew of them, he never contemplated the sheer amount of them. Who knows, the ones he was looking at could just be the tip of the iceberg.
He had a feeling that it was. Unclassified skills were skills that had no relation to any of the Oasis Online classes. These types of skills were very useful for players that took on passive roles in the game, such as healers or life players.
As a result, these individuals would have an edge if they found themselves in a potentially dangerous situation.
However, there was a setback to using these types of skills, because they were unclassified, and regular stat points couldn’t be used to upgrade them. Only special stat points obtained from Unique quests could be used to upgrade them.
Ari knew Unique quests were hard to get. He had read many forum posts of people whining that they couldn’t raise their unclassified skills because they couldn’t raise their intimacy with humanoid monster NPCs to get one.
This is because these NPCs start at -50. It was understandable why they were bent out of shape, especially if their social skills were poor. But what he couldn’t understand was why did they think the DEVs would make it easy for them?
Did they really think that those monster-type NPCs would be like the regular ones? To even consider that would be laughable. There was no way those players could be so naïve... right?
But after remembering everything he had read on the forums, he realized that yes... yes, they could be.
“So, which one are you going to get?” Ji-Hye asked, the anticipation getting to her.
Snapping out of his thoughts, Ari continued looking through the skills. Some of them looked overpowered at first glance but were actually useless in the long run. Discarding those from his choices, he focused on the ones that would be beneficial to him.
After a few minutes of debating on which one to choose, a skill that cost 71 fish located near the bottom of the list grabbed his attention. And after reading its description, he knew he needed to get it.
With a wide grin, he pointed it out to Ji-Hye before saying, “This one... this the one I’m going to get.”
“CharmSpeak?” Ji-Hye questioned, a confused glint in her eyes. “Out of all the many offensive skills you could get, you chose a neutral one?”
Her confusion was understandable, but Ari had his reasons for choosing a neutral skill instead of a defensive one. “Read the description and you will understand why.”

CharmSpeak: A skill that was born from the breath of sirens and embraced by tricksters. It can be as simple as you asking an NPC how was their day was. If it’s phrased as a command, the NPC will be more inclined to be honest or go along with what you wanted to do. If this skill was in the hands of someone terrible, who knows what kind of chaos that would bring?
CharmSpeak was a skill Ari knew he had to have. He knew he would benefit from having it once he started playing the game.
First, the skill was extremely versatile, and he could use it in a lot of different situations. Second, according to the skill’s description, it can make NPCs more apt to go along with what the player wants, so he could tell an NPC that they were best friends and they would be inclined to believe it. And lastly, because of the second reason, the skill would definitely help him get some exceptional quests.
Which was perfect since it could help him make the money he needed so he could have a better life than he did in his previous life.
“Wow, no wonder you didn’t choose a defensive skill... shit, if only I caught more fish,” Ji-Hye said, shaking Ari from his musings."
Nodding his head in agreement, Ari clicked the skill, purchasing it, leaving him with only 41 fish left in his possession. “I don’t think I will have enough to lend you some of my fish.”
Ji-Hye laughed looking towards him as if he told a funny joke. “I knew you wouldn’t have enough,” she said.
“But you hoped.”
“Of course, I hoped, but let’s be real. The prizes correlated too much with the number of fish you caught. Therefore, I knew I wouldn’t get anything unless you got a bad skill. The last thing I want you to do is to do that,” Ji-Hye said.
“I know,” Ari replied with a gentle smile.
“What are you waiting for?” Ji-Hye urged as she playfully bumped into him. “Find a second skill for yourself.”
He chuckled at her words before nodding his head in agreement before turning his attention back to the transparent screen. Only to see that the skills had changed after his fish were taken away.
After browsing through them for a bit, he found a skill that cost 38 fish that he was interested in getting.
The skill was called ‘Spatial awareness’ and, according to its description, it allowed the player to detect monsters and collectibles up to a certain foot. According to his perception, it sounded like it would be a wonderful skill to have, and it was not too expensive.
“Nice find!” Ji-Hye exclaimed.
However, her words were cut short by the blaring of a horn that sounded throughout the night market, followed by a system alert that popped up for everyone.
It was time for the main event to commence.
