Chapter 56: Chapter fifty-five

Present day

 

In a small house by the sea a tall man reclined in a well-worn chair. He read a book. He sipped a cup of tea.

Once, this man had lived a different life. He had travelled the world. He had known its darkest corners. On good days, he thought he had made it better. On bad days, he thought he had made it worse.

But that was long ago. Now, he was older, his hair beginning to grey. He had traded that life for one of peace and simple pleasures.

As the sun began to sink below the horizon, casting the sea and sky in a brilliant orange, he thought that was a fair trade.

His front door opened and another man entered. This man wore all black and there was nothing simple or peaceful in him. He was a man of violent purpose.

“Hello Oliver,” he said.

Oliver smiled and called the man by a name he hadn’t heard in many years.

“That’s not my name,” he said. “Not in a long time.”

“You can’t be Oblivion all the time.”

“Perhaps, but Oblivion is who I need to be today.”

“You’ve come for the suit then?”

“Yes. And the one for Dusk too.”

“She’s watching me with a sniper rifle right now, isn’t she?”

“Trust is hard to come by.”

Oliver heaved a sigh. “There was a time I would have commended you for that instinct. The suits are this way.”

Oliver led the hero to a trick wall and revealed a hidden compartment. Within hung the result of most of his severance pay, and a fair bit of ill-gotten gains from a previous life besides. Two superhero suits: one was dark grey like smoke in the night and came paired with a sniper rifle, the other purest black but for the featureless white of the mask.

“Thank you,” Oblivion said, looking at the suit in the way another man might look at his own missing arm.

“Can I ask what you’re going to use them for?” Oliver asked.

“You can ask,” Oblivion said. He took the suits and walked out without another word.
