When I woke up that morning, I felt a new sense that came to me. It was a sense that pointed me towards Robin, Nuri and Cecelia. I could sense their being and the direction they were from me. I had to do rounds anyway so I tested the sense at a distance across campus and found I always knew how far and in which direction they were from me through an instinctual concept. Robin should have this ability as well. Sensing the amount of spirit energy capacity we gathered so far, we were three quarters of the way to reaching the maximum we could in this world.
I got to work clearing the stragglers off the makeshift barricades I placed the day before. Most of the zombies were in small groups of two to three rather thana large mob like the day before. I had already reported the lack of power to the laboratory and other buildings to Robin. I wasn’t sure how Nuri would take the news but life constantly hits us with the unexpected. Maybe a better way to word it is that due to my lack of experience with city building, the power grid and multiple other modern engineering information was my field of study and not something I had experience with. I only had experience with cooking good food and sourcing fresh ingredients.
It might have been better to leave along with Matthew the more I thought about it. If he and Anna had children then repopulating the world could be a goal. As it stands currently, there would have to be incest between my offspring in order for them to have their own children. I don’t know if putting them into that situation was fair.
As I moved on to the fields where the animals were, I saw the strangest sight. The zombies there did not attack any of the livestock. The goats and cows also weren’t afraid of the zombies that walked near. Once the zombies noticed me however, they attacked in a frenzy.
I readied the bat which was now slightly bent and stained with dried blood. I took a breath and readied my swing. I swung at the zombies that reached me. The growls were more audible as they got closer.
Zombie One: “Argaehahaahae aheaghea aehfeahfa!”
Zombie Two: “Eaarahgg eaarahgg Eaaragg”
The second zombie did the same growl three times before I swung and splattered his head. One of the cows walked over to me and began licking my face. It was probably a friendly cow that liked humans and was unbothered by the dead zombies that lay on the ground.
I still wasn’t sure how this zombie behavior worked. I began to wonder if destroying the head was the only way to kill them. There were a few of them I could sense nearby so I made my way over. The third zombie I found was standing near a tree and looking up. It was once a female since I could see the long hair and feminine body shape, one that cared a lot about her health and fitness.
If I really thought about it, she was someone’s daughter before… but a second later I decided it’s better not to think about things I don’t have much control over. Too many unnecessary thoughts would ruin my ability to act.
I wanted to test how zombies reacted to different stimuli. I used the bat which still had a shine on it to reflect light onto the tree. The zombie then began to follow the light but didn’t react beyond a look. Once it seemed to identify it was only a light it went back to staring at the tree. She still hadn’t noticed me so I tried one more thing. I picked up a rock and threw it next to her. It hit the ground causing a loud thud.
With my feet I felt the vibration from the rock and the zombie suddenly turned to the rock's origin point of motion. The origin point was towards me, where the trajectory came from. She spotted me and then charged over in the usual zombified frenzy I've become familiar with. I used the bat once more and knocked her head off cleanly away from her neck.
Zombie behavior was interesting. I still didn’t confirm whether they had the ability to perform a programmed response or if they were purely instinctual. Since they leave animals alone, I can conclude that they will seek out and attack humans only. Did this mean that the zombies could eventually learn how to do things we do easily such as opening doors?
I put a few large objects near the broken fences to prevent stragglers from having easy access to the agricultural areas. I made sure to pet the cow before returning to the dorms.
Robin was cuddling with Cecelia and Nuri on the bed quietly when I got back. The depressed looks on their faces meant that the events the night before, as fun as they were for me, didn’t help the two girls or Robin like they thought it might.
Kevin: “Am I interrupting you girls in the middle of something?”
The first to get up was Robin who gave a half smile that lacked any happiness. Nuri and Cecelia were quiet. They both stood up and walked over to hug me. All of them were wearing clothing appropriate for the cool fall weather, and the dorm room itself didn't have it's usual warmth because the electric heater had no power.
Cecelia: “We’re depressed over everything that’s happened. Robin was telling us about the accident you both had in your previous life and how everything was disappointing after that. Then you got a second chance. Nuri and I only have this life. It's not the life we want. We want children, and we want to see them grow up and find their own happiness too. We could have hidden our four way relationship from the world, or maybe it wouldn’t even have mattered… but everything is over. I don’t have hope. I don’t know.. I don’t know…”
I hugged her back as she rested her head on my shoulder and I admired her long red hair. Robin wasn’t bothered by my show of affection so I didn’t think there was anything to worry about. Nuri was also hugging me. Nuri was quiet as well.
Kevin: “Nuri, you’re also depressed?”
Nuri: “Yes. I am sad because the four of us will not live the lives we wanted to live. We should not get pregnant because our kids will not have a good genetic partner. Half siblings still have a high chance for birth defects. It would not be fair for them.”
Kevin: “I’m sorry… I’m sorry I can’t do anything about it.”
Even if I have a lot of power, I don’t have the power needed. What could I do? I can’t make the world go back to the way it was… I thought for several minutes. The only chance for us to do the family thing is if we can find some other group or settlers. We can’t be the only ones who survived. Even if we find some males then it might be possible to have genetically different children. Nuri and I are asian and Cecelia and Robin are white… well all the children will have a certain asian to them but at least the genetic diversity is there.
Robin: “Kevin, don’t think too hard. I know you’re mulling over everything. Nuri and Cecelia want to help us complete the amount of power we need. We’re already at 75% of the way there. Once we do that then maybe we’re thinking of leaving and looking for other people to see if there is a chance we can rebuild humanity.”
I heard what she was saying and I reasoned that it was possible. It had only been a day and I didn’t expect everyone to be like the Carvard student. There might be someone in the nearby towns who survived the first night locked away and hiding if they weren’t noticed by the zombies. Apparently the zombies don’t attack the animals, maybe some humans could avoid it as well right?
Kevin: “Robin, this morning when I was clearing out the zombies that wandered over here there were some in the fields with the animals.”
Robin: “No! Did they kill our meat?”
Kevin: “No, they didn’t. They just walked around and didn’t bother with the animals at all. The zombies only attack and kill humans. There were no animal zombies anywhere. None of the livestock were attacked even when most of the agricultural students who were around the animals during the miasma. None attacked them.”
Robin gave me a look of surprise.
Nuri: “I am happy for the animals. I am vegetarian, but I am happy you three will have meat to eat, but what does the zombies leaving the animals alone mean?”
Nuri didn’t have a smile despite her statement of being happy. I guess she was just being polite.
Kevin: “It means that we have a clue into their behavioral pattern. If they don’t attack animals or even bother with them and only attack humans then they have to be able to recognize different species. You know about the trapdoor spider right? It won’t pop out and grab something unless it can recognize it as prey.”
Nuri: “So the zombies know a human is a human?”
Robin: “It’s something like that. The Zombies know that we are humans and will try to attack us, and it knows that an animal is an animal.”
I thought about it some more, and the more I thought about it, the more I felt I should leave and go look for other survivors. There might be a chance we can all bring humanity back… even if it’s a small chance I have to try. It doesn’t bode well when I can’t sense a living human anywhere near.

Kevin: “There is one other thing Robin, can you sense my presence when I’m far away?”
Robin: “Give me a moment, let me concentrate.”
Robin begin to tap into the spirit capacity we forcibly enlarged over this time. We both learned that the capacity was something we could both draw from but I had a higher compatibility rate than Robin without the suit. The spirit capacity is constantly being filled, and having sex and climaxing increases that capacity… I didn’t think about it at the time but I believe the reason we have to reincarnate multiple times is because the capacity during reincarnation improves our compatibility and we need that improved compatibility to get to a higher maximum.
Robin then put on the suit and concentrated. Less than ten seconds she took off the suit and nodded in confirmation.
Robin: “I can sense your presence only when the suit is on, and I feel I can locate Nuri and Cecelia no matter how far away they are. So we’d be able to find them as long as they’re alive.”
Kevin: “We seem to get new abilities when we reach a certain amount of gathered spirit capacity.”
Robin: “I don’t know if we'll need that if we're just staying here though.”
Kevin: “I’m not staying, I’m going to leave and look for other survivors.”
Robin: “What're you saying? Kevin? Why're you sayin' it?”
Cecelia stood up in disbelief. Nuri was the only one who remained calm.
Cecelia: “You can’t leave! I just met you a month ago, I didn’t even have enough time with you and now you’re just leaving? I know I’m depressed right now but stay please. Stay with us. There might be nothing out there and you’ll waste what little time we all have left together.”
Cecelia pleaded and had a pained look on her face. I need to explain myself clearly.
Robin: “Cecelia. Let Kevin explain. As long as I’ve known him, he doesn’t make moves without thinking ahead.”
I took a breath to explain everything. There was a method to my reasoning.
Kevin: “In order to save humanity we have to find other survivors. Genetics will help with repopulation. I’m going see if anyone survived in the major areas. It’ll be easier to go by myself and since Robin can sense me she will know the direction to me. If the three of you have to leave this place I can still easily contact Robin or follow the sense to get to you.”
Nuri: “You... want to find other survivors for genetic diversity in our children?”
Kevin: “Nuri, I think you're sad because you lost hope for happiness and children. We need each other, but we also need others in a community. Our children will need them to find a future partner. The zombies aren’t a threat to me. I won’t have problems traveling and since animals can survive I can hunt for food easily. I’ll drive to the city and stop at every gas station along the way to see if I can find someone who locked themselves in the bathroom or something stupid like that. The issue is that I have to go soon and go quickly before people starve to death in isolation. It’s only been a day so far, so most of them wouldn't have died yet if they survived the initial turning.”
Cecelia hugged me tightly
Cecelia: “I know why you’re doing but this is all too sudden. Who has time to accept it like this?”
Robin: “It’s a good idea. While you’re gone I’ll stay here and go with Nuri and Cecelia’s plan to get to the maximum spirit capacity. Once I’m done, we’ll decide whether we come find you and travel, or if you have found a community we can move then. Staying here we already know the safe places Nuri and Cecelia can hide if a horde shambles in.”
I took a deep breath, then took a good look at Robin, Cecelia and Nuri. Survival is time sensitive and I needed to go.
Kevin: “This isn’t good bye but I’ll go and pack up to leave.”
Robin: “No, no you won’t.”
Kevin: “I thought we agreed.”
Robin: “No. Spend some time with Cecelia and Nuri until the afternoon. You can leave in the evening since you don’t have trouble seeing at night. Once they go to sleep, take one of the cars and drive out. I’ll be able to talk to you by telepathy so I don’t need to say good bye. This is for them two because you can't talk to them with telepathy.”
Cecelia: “Kevin… this is so sudden…”
Cecelia wasn’t enthused about it.
Robin: “This is sudden but he’s right. If we want to rescue more people we can’t sit around. Every day is another person dead.”
Kevin: “I know I’ll be going away for a while, but let’s talk without sex before I leave. We can do it when I get back, I'm only going to the city first and there are a lot of zombies there. I need to save my energy.”
Robin: “You’re disappointing but that’s logical. The three of you go somewhere you can talk together. I’ll take care of everything for today. Nuri and Cecelia, remember not to go out without me going with you. One zombie can be dangerous, and Kevin, do not leave until I see you again or I’ll be very angry.”
Kevin: "I only plan to be gone for a week."
Robin left the room leaving us three behind before I could say more.
Author's Note: So I realized I should probably slow down my updates a bit. I've re-read some of my stuff and my head gets into a space where I write without realizing I put in so many words that only make the read more difficult. If you've read up until now thank you. I might edit previous chapters when I have time to make sentences easier to read and understand.
