Chapter 28: The Strangers II
.................
"Demon Sheriff," Yovan stated, "This is where he was last seen." One of the things Yovan instructed Francis on finding the individual titled as the Demon Sheriff.
"I'll send my man to find him," Capone pulled out a cigar and took a long smoke as his subordinates started exiting through the doors on his shoes, growing to their original size.
His devil fruit is quite interesting, and even Yovan doesn't know much about it besides the things he heard and seen.
Its name is apparently Shiro Shiro no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows the user to become a living fortress, making the user a Castle Human.
As for its applications, Yovan doesn't know much besides the things already shown by Bege.
The subordinates seem to know what should be done without Bege telling them anything, perhaps another application of his Devil Fruit.
"How long will take you to recover?" This was something that was confusing Bege a lot, and it will certainly dictate how he should go about things from now on.
Yovan didn't seem to have recovered much. His legs and arm are still broken though they were healing under the supervision of one of the Bege's subordinates. Of course he has doctors amidst his hidden army.
The real problem was Yovan's unchanging state of being nothing but skin and bones, looking absolutely horrific.
Capone mused things in his mind, coming up with several theories on why that's so. The conclusion was that he got to have Yovan as an underling.
"I'll go to sleep..." Yovan murmured before closing his eyes, seemingly dozing off.
Capone, however, knew with absolute certainty that Yovan was actually practicing the concept of Haki, so he didn't doubt much and instead walked away to practice himself.
If their destination is truly as dangerous as he assumes, then perhaps Haki will be his sacred protection... Only if he can learn it fast enough because according to the info given by Don, it takes years.
'I guess I have no option,' Yovan was, in fact, not practicing Haki, at least not today.
It started at the end of his unluckiest day to date. Something appeared in Limitless.
[Question:]
It was a very simple option which Yovan understood instantly, so his first doubt was how many questions can he ask and will they all be answered.
So he started with the most ridiculous of questions, nonquestions. All he had to do was to think of it in his mind and it appears on the option.
[Question: Tell me everything about Limitless?]
That's of course not a question, but Yovan wanted to see if adding a question mark in the end can break the system, basically looking for a loophole.
He received no answer though, but he didn't give up... Not until there was no other option. He tried everything, but nothing worked. Either Limitless is strangely intelligent, or it can detect his intentions.
He was leaning more to the latter since Limitless so far seemed quite simple in that regard, and at least not intelligent enough to communicate with him.
It was basically a program attributed a certain task beyond Yovan's comprehension... Well, not for long as he asked quite the simple question.
[Question: What is Limitless' task?]
What he truly wanted was to ask what is Limitless, but that question could be answered with a simple 'A system' or 'A program'. Limitless didn't seem like it wanted him to know much, so he had to be specific.
[Answer: To Find An Heir] And so the question option vanished.
'I... Fuck!!' Yovan had to bite his dry lips to keep the curse in his mind. That was like the worst news possible because that almost certainly means he wasn't the first to go through the inheritance.
There were either a few before him, billions, or even infinity, and none of them succeeded. Just his first test was enough to tell him what awaits him, only more suffering and agony.
Yovan has a premonition that things will only get worst from here. His luck might've returned to zero after the event, but it will surely go down again because the moment the misfortune passed about two weeks ago, the countdown returned.
[Countdown]
[8431]
Yovan took a deep breath, calming himself down before starting to meditate. He was also contemplating his future, coming up with a way to lower the chances of death at the end of the countdown.
Well, he already came up with such a way that made his Limitless stats quite messed up.
[System: Limitless]
[Name: Yovan Night]

His current condition severely lowered his power though it seemed to gradually increase some of his other stats, such as his Endurance and Mastery over his Devil Fruit.
He stopped his physical training and focused solely on over-draining himself with the feathers of desperation. From torture to another, and worst torture at that.
Yovan completely ignored his lowering lifespan, choosing to turn a blind eye to that because he might die in a year or two, so why worry about his lifespan?
His breathing settled down as he focused on feeling the sweet breeze brushing against his dry skin. It was one of the methods used to sense internal energy and train his Kenbunshoku Haki.
It's a form of Haki that grants the user a sixth sense that allows them to sense the presence, strength, and emotions of others.
And while this form of training isn't the most optimal, Yovan found it the most useful because it actually increases his Mind stat.
A while passed with Yovan being lost in his meditation. Hours or minutes, Yovan wasn't sure, but he was certain that things didn't go according to plan as he heard the echoing sounds of explosions.
"Weren't we supposed to keep a low profile?"
They were in the territory of the Illisia kingdom, and they docked very close to one of its cities. The city certainly has a Marine base nearby, so it was only a matter of time before they arrive.
Yovan twisted into his crow form and flew to the outwards of the city, the source of the explosions.
From high in the sky, he could see two people messing around. They didn't seem intent on killing each other, more so causing a bloodbath in the surroundings.
They didn't harm each other, but they certainly harmed those around them, the innocent citizens moving about.
Yovan landed right in their midst, causing Capone to halt his attacks. The other person also stopped as his eyes landed on Yovan's sickly frame.
Yovan eyed the incredibly pale man, as he tapped danced his way to him because of his shoes.
He is very slim and tall, much taller than Yovan even when standing, now he was seated on the ground.
He wears an off-white collared long-sleeve shirt patterned with yellow crosses and navy jumper pants.
His most distinguishing accessories are his classic black top hat and red wooden cane, with which he also wears a pair of gold hoop earrings. His lips are abnormally dark red.
The man before him was none other than the Demon Sherrif, Yovan's goal was simply to recruit him, yet before he could say anything, the Demon Sherrif stated, "You're gorgeous..."
"Huh?" Yovan couldn't help but be confused because was pretty sure his condition right now was nothing but horrifying.
"Laffitte. They call me the Demon Sherrif for some reason." With a bright smile, Laffitte introduced himself eloquently.
"He said he will only join us if I make him happy. He looks like a psycho, so..." Capone walked up to the duo, and stood next to Yovan with narrow eyes, wary of Laffitte.
"Mmm, I'm suddenly very happy, so I'll gladly join you." As he spoke, Laffitte's eyes never left Yovan.
He was quite the odd individual, but Yovan didn't care. The only thing that mattered to him was the fact that Laffitte is an exceptional navigator, and apparently a very good fighter.
"We've attracted too much attention, so let's move." Afterward, Yovan flew away, leaving Laffitte and Capone alone. If he felt something about the small massacre, Yovan didn't show it.
Almost instantly, Laffitte began dancing, the tapping sound of his black tap dancing shoes reverberating along with the sound of burning fire around, complemented by the exquisite movement of his red wooden cane.
"Ohh, what a lovely day!"
"What a weirdo." Capone Bege noted under his breath before walking away, soon followed by Laffitte. That and the sound of the Marines running after them, taken care of by a few cannonballs.
